This was really weird. I had a very nice sounding gentleman contact me about buying something for his wife - he wanted to know what my best price was.
I told him and he made the offer. I was in the middle of packing and shipping so I didn't accept immediately.
I then received a phone call from the guy (from the UK no less) saying that he had some computer problems and wanted me to go ahead and take the offer so that he could pay me right away I guess he was using someone else's computer.
After I hung up I called ebay and asked how he got my number. They checked and said that I had not had any transactions with him in the last 45 days so they didn't know how he got. Suggested I run a scan on my computer and ship the item Express Mail.
Next time I checked my email I saw an ebay request for my information from the guy. The only problem is it was an hour before I took the offer.
I'm really not concerned about this guy as I'm pretty sure he is a legit buyer but I am concerned that ebay would give out my personal information to ANYONE who requested it. The request had the item number on it so I know it wasn't another item.
Does this sound odd to anyone else?

More weirdness.
The ebay request for my information is in my personal email account but isn't in my ebay messages. Shouldn't it be there as well?

He may have done business with you before under a different ID ,or he knows someone who has?
DIDNT YOU SAY HE COULD BE ON SOMEONE ELSE PC?
If someone knows your name and zip code,it is no big deal to find your phone number?

How is he paying you?
I hope it is not one of those I will send you 3 USPS postal orders each 1K and you remit the difference to me.
I dont know where they are printed, but once I have someone in GA who has them sent to me from UK, they are not free,he paid plenty for those fake postal orders!

Do you by chance include your contact info in your listing? Some businesses do. To promote our business and further legitimize it beyond eBay we include information like "Next time in Portland visit (our name and address) and mention we were nominated for Top 5 best mid-century modern stores in Apartment Therapy magazine.
We have received calls on our business line from people who see that, then pull up our website and call us to inquire. I just had a local person do that about some chairs we have.

No he isn't a past buyer - ebay confirmed that.
He requested my information thur ebay on an item he had made an offer on but had not yet purchased. The number in the email matched the item number and the email was received an hour before I accepted the offer.
The buyer didn't do anything wrong - but ebay sure did!!
I don't have my information listed anywhere in my listings. Ebay gave it to him and gave me his information as well.

I just got off the phone with ebay and was told that my information had been given out by mistake. She said the UK has different rules etc, but it should have been handle according to US rules - not theirs. She thinks he manually requested the information and the customer service in the UK misunderstood and gave it in error.

You did not tell us he has made an offer,it may not be a mistake on the part of Ebay-UK,Ebay reps sometimes dont know what they are talking about.
Ebay could have programmed into the system anyone who has made an offer which is not immediately turned down can get contact information of the seller.

lost.....ebabes mentioned in her original post that he had made an offer and that he would pay right away so there is no question of him 'playing' any Money Order games.
ebabe...Sounds like you have a bona fide buyer there so the EBay UK error may turn out well for you!

Yeah I wasn't really ever concerned about the buyer. I was concerned more that my information was given out.
Suppose it was someone in my city and I didn't take the offer? I could have some nut case knocking on my door or worst trying to rob me.
Shag - if I had a B&M store I wouldn't mind putting in address or phone numbers, but I don't so it's different for me.

I received my first ever phone call from a buyer last week also. She just wanted to make sure I had the right address as her address has changed. She called before I even knew I sold the item. I think something has changed about giving out personal information too.

If the partys know your name or address finding a land line is easy unless its unlisted. Its even possible to find cell numbers.
