My neighbor asked me to purchase a pair of dolls for her.
They were listed as new - never been out of the box.
When they arrived, the boy doll was face down and there was scuff marks on his hat in the back and some on the side. There was a broken rubber band around his feet but nothing around his waist and no loose rubber band inside the box. There was a crease on the lid flap and a tear inside the box. He had to have been taken out of the box at some point.
The seller doesn't take returns but I emailed him and he said he would take them back but could not pay her return shipping.
3 questions:
Should I try to get the return shipping paid for? It cost $16.95 (a bit high in my mind)
Is there a way I can do the label through ebay so there is a record of it?
Why was I so stupid to do this in the 1st place?

Technically, he is not responsible for return shipping... but if he listed it incorrectly, he should take responsibility for the cost of return shipping. I would point out that you are a long time seller as well and you are always willing to make it right when you've made an error.

If you filed an INAD claim against him eBay will actually issue you a return shipping label at neither parties expense. The thing is that this will negatively affect the seller. I would let him know that you don't want to do this, but his terms are unacceptable considering he misled you into purchasing this item. You wouldn't have bought it if he accurately described the item... meaning you wouldn't have incurred the additional costs and headaches dealing with his mistake.

If you choose to purchase your own postage don't need to do a label through eBay, but you can print one directly through Paypal if using USPS.

Here is the link: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now

What I do is just add the tracking number into the "notes" of the item so that if there is a problem eBay can see that you have it noted there and the date you added it. It adds to your credibility. I use this to add serial numbers, or any other info when I sell an item.

As for helping your neighbor, I think they probably won't bother you in the future after this. I suggest showing them how to set up an eBay account so they can make their own purchases and build their own feedback.

Some TRS sellers who receive 20% off from Ebay FVF fee do not want to lose that privilege,if he is one of them,he may be willing to pay for the return shipping
I have a case when I shipped an item in a regional C box and the post office collected an extra 16 dollars from my buyer, she paid half and I paid half,I am grateful as it is my oversight,I should have paid $16,not 8.
You can suggest to the seller on splitting the return shipping since he is selling an item significantly not as described.

My neighbor is paying the shipping.
She used to have a ebay account but was getting some type of virus message and it scared her. She never plans to shop on ebay again after this.

We're out of town a lot and she keeps an eye on our house so I wanted to help.

He's not a TRS. He was nice about it but said he couldn't pay the return shipping. He said he was selling this for a colleague and they said they were never opened.

I don't see how he could have missed the doll flopping around in the box.

I may suggest the splitting of the shipping just to get it over with.

email the seller that you have no choice but to file an INAD with eBay. Then do it. They are not your friends you owe them no loyalty or compassion its just business.

Nice or not, if is is really misrepresented, you deserve a full refund + return shipping paid. Why should you suffer a loss if he did not know what he was selling.

The problem is there is no way to force the seller to pay return shipping, some do for fear of a negative feedback.

Let eBay resolve it through INAD

I think we worked it out. He said he would cover the return shipping.

I don't want to do INAD if I can help it. I wouldn't want one of my buyers to do that to me without giving me a chance make it right.

I agree with you.I'm sure having the possibility that a buyer can file an INAD helps less agreeable sellers do the right thing.

I just did the return label for $7.15 with my discount.
He shipped in a large flat rate when he could have shipped it in a regular priority box for half the price. I don't know if this was due to lack of knowledge or laziness.

As long as he refund the full purchase price including the shipping of $16.95, there shouldn't be a problem. He is responsible for covering the $16.95 you were charged whether it cost him $3 or $50 to ship it.

I just sold an item that I found out I basically took a loss on (or at least wasted my time). I paid $4 for it thinking it was worth more. I discovered I could get $20 including shipping. Problem is that shipping from Portland to the East Coast was $13. $4.00 COGS + $3.25 in fees + $13 shipping is breaking even, plus or minus $1.

Then... I purchased some items on Friday for $20. After listing them and calculating my fees, I estimate they will get $600-$750 profit.

My point is that you minimize the loss, move on and make gains elsewhere.

some sellers dont have all the different kinds of USPS priority boxes on hand, and it is too much trouble to drive to a nearby post office to get one.
There are so many sizes and types and labels and forms,it is like runnning a mini post office

You can go on line and order boxes and have them delivered to your door. What you don't use and don't want to save you can drop off at your PO. But honestly, if you plan to have a business on ebay, you need to learn all how to save your buyers money if you can and if you sell enough, you will use all these boxes.
In this case it cost him $24 when it would have cost him $14. On any item not returned, it going to cost him some low DSR's on shipping cost.

well, some are just hobby sellers ,some use Fed Exp or UPS,some may order what they need, and it does not dawn on them they need every shape and size and type, like USPS express mail intl guarantee?
It takes room to store all these boxes and forms.
I know I have some regional box 'C',and I cant find any information on C anymore, once I used it to ship an item and the buyer ended up being charge 16 more dollars.
I seldom go to post office,so I wont be returning any boxes, eventually some of them will be trashed.
The closest post office is a 30 miles round trip!
not sure about getting low DSR for shipping,if the buyer agrees on the shipping term, and not every buyer knows the seller could ship USPS priority mail for ten dollars less?

Lost - I read in another post about your issue with the Regional C. How did it let you purchase the postage for the C and then charge your customer?
I don't think you could ever purchase them on ebay but you could the A & B - but the option won't show unless the address is close enough.
I haven't tried in a while but I would go to the USPS site and print regional C labels to ship to my assistant. She lives 40 miles away and I would mail her stuff in regional boxes all the time. It was a lot cheaper than the time and gas.
As to the boxes, maybe your postman will take them back for you. Seems a waste to trash them.

I was looking for a big USPS priority box and found the C box,so I used it,I cant find much information on the box so I just slapped a few more dollars on it thinking it will suffice.
Our local post office knows less than I do,so I dont ask them for information,I rely on USPS website and this forum or Ebay seller forum.
I have not tried asking my mail man to bring the unused boxes back to the post office,I am afraid she may just trash them!

I know, the regional boxes seem to confuse a lot of people.
It is my understanding that you can only use them to ship things close to you or maybe in your state.
I had a lady in south Florida request that I use one to ship to her and when I tried it was an option.

I just got a paypal payment from the guy for the return shipping with a note stating that ebay should be returning the original amount.
How would ebay know to do this?

eBay doesn't just issue the refund out of the blue. The seller has to initiate it after they received and inspected the item.

One point to make that is important is that when a buyer initiates an INAD, they will be refunded the full amount upon return.

If the buyer and seller agree without an INAD claim filed, then it is up to the seller to issue the full refund.

As a seller, we hate to see someone just file an INAD, but filing it isn't escalating it. We just need to accept this is the new way "simplified way" for buyers to communicate with sellers.

He wrote me back and said he had me confused with another case.
He then refund the money but deducted the return shipping?
Well this will be the last time I EVER buy something for someone else!!!

He should go to MY EBAY and issue a request to cancel this transaction,if the buyer agrees then Ebay will refund his FVF .
If buyer disagrees, then he is #*!@ out of luck or he can try calling Ebay customer service.
If buyer ignores the request, after 7 days,he gets his FVF back.
I am surprised many sellers do not use this feature.
Just going to Paypal and issue a refund to the buyer would not get his Ebay FVF back, thats my understanding!

At this point I would not agree to cancel and if he does not live up to his word - he's going to get a big fat negative.
