I've grown real tired real quick with these Pop-Under Ads that are invading the web sites like crabgrass. I'm not crazy about loading my browsers with programs that can cripple normal functions also that I want to function. I'd love to hear some ideas on combating this plague that make browsing a the internet similar to eating at a picnic having to swat away flies and gnats. It is hard to believe something could be more annoying that email spam but pop-under ads seem to be headed that direction. Here's one article on the problem and combating the advertisers, Software Can Stave Off Internet Ads (June 25).

I appreciate the fact that the 10X.com site (that miniature camera add) has irked enough people that they've had to include a FAQ section on their site to deal with the many complaints.

Any tips on stopping this with software or preferably, discouraging advertisers that employ this method would be appreciated.

Two of my news sources started using pop-ups. I emailed them that I was dropping them from my bookmarks because of that practice.
That's about all you can do - take your interest elsewhere.
You could go all out and identify and contact each and every advertiser that the site has and register your complaints that way, but I don't have the energy to do all that when there are so many quality competing sites available.

I like that tactic, I'll try and employ that when I can. It's one thing to ignore an ad, it's another thing to have to remove it from under your windshield wiper each time you go to the car.

Just start using netscape when you come to AW. No more problem.

Unfortunately I normally use Netscape, but not on AW at present . Not only does eBay put the screws to AW on the business front they end up causing AW's users grief with a pop-under ad.

EBay 2, AW 0

I use Netscape and it is giving me trouble also. When the window pops up I have to close all visible windows then control/alt delete shows a copy running that is not visible I have to end to restore function.

I'm having the very same problem uaru. It started yesterday, now Netscape won't load programs for some reason and I've had to use my old version of Netscape. Are you using 6.0? (It's riddled with problems!)

I get a pop-up advertising eBay each time I try to log on to AW. That started yesterday and I swear it's screwed my settings up or something. The sites start to load, then quit about half way.....but the pop up loads fine.

I think Meya posted something about how to get rid of them. I think she said the software was through ZDNet, but I'm not sure. Please let me know if you find out anything!!

What a time I've been having! Now 4.7 won't load and I'm back using the ever-so-slow 6.0.

I found a site a ZDNet, so I'm going to see if that works.

I would have thought that something to fix the problem would have been done by now! (even if that meant disabling the ads until the bug was fixed)

These random pop-unders started getting real bad for me last night (sometimes I would have 3-4 open windows at the bottom just from trying to go from one topic to the next! Then, I started having pages not load, just a big blank white page. Even refreshing wouldn't help. I finally just gave up and left.

This AM it started off with only getting the pop-under when I would come to the message center. As the morning has worn on, I am having more and more of a problem. The pop-unders seem very random and progressively agressive! Just a little while ago, when I hit the "post reply" button, I got two pop-unders appear and when I tried to close them, my screen went black and then Norton Crashguard told me I had a fatal error! Tried to let it correct, but it couldn't and I had to shut down my browser and start all over! I use IE 5.0!

Since, I know very little about how all this stuff works (or even the correct names to call things), I am very easily frustrated when there is a glitch!

I tried downloading one of the ad busters mentioned by some, but apparently it didn't load, if it did I can't find it! Help!!!

When I come to AW their pop-up ad jambs my system. I use Netscape and it locks up my browser and my only recourse is to reboot my computer to get on here or remember to run my javascript off before comeing here. Isn't that classified as a "Denial of Service attack" on your pc? Maybe law enforcement can show these folks the way.

Sulyn...

What did you try to load? Click on your Start > Programs and see if you can find it...if you do, click on it and see what happens.

edited to say: I loaded POW...did as I suggested you do and now it's in my system tray. I had to add the evil half.com to it...working fine for IE5. I see the popup for a second...then it's zapped and gone. Be sure to read the readme file for whatever program you loaded....

I tried downloading a fix program (WebWasher) off of ZDNet, but it didn't make any difference.

I've gone to other sites, but I'm only getting these from eBay and AW.

Is there some way I could disable the url where the pop-ups originate? In the proxy? I've tried some other browser versions and even though I hate it, Netscape 6.0 is the only version which won't stall.

I'll try some different things and let you know.

Toke!! I was hoping to see you......any suggestions???

(just saw toke's post)

Hello everyone,

FYI, Mark just posted this in the eBay Outlook:

Hi everyone,

My apologies for the malfunctioning ads- the agency which serves our ads is apparently having isues with cookie control on their ad servers. We've disabled the ads until we can get this issue resolved.

Regards,

Mark

Hi kraft...

Well, looks like it's fixed for now, but I betcha it'll be back...

That little POW program worked well for IE, I'm glad to have it. Also, reddeer's advice to disable Javascript worked well for Netscape. I would hate to have to toggle that option back and forth, though. I need Javascript for some things.

Here's hoping for no new crisis for at least a week...

Thanks for fixing things for us toke!

I'm still trying to figure out if you can filter out certain url's, instead of having to download software as a fix.......another brain-teaser for the week!

These pop-under ads reminded me of something else... I sure like Netscape over IE. I was using IE and I was reminded constantly why I didn't use IE.

I have no idea about the urls...I'm definitely no techie.

I agree with you uaru, can't stand IE. I only use it when Netscape fails me for some reason. Still using 4.76...I'm afraid to go to 6, heard so many bad things about it......

I agree uaru! Are you using 6.0? The big thing with 6.0 toke, is a cache problem. If you hit "Back" it reloads instead of using the cached copy. If you're not on high-speed yet, it takes about 30 seconds for each new page to load. It's like using a 14400 modem! I'd wait for a fixed version before I'd download it toke.

I'm using Netscape 4.70 I don't upgrade unless there's a good reason. IE is just too slow for me, I also like backing out of a form I've partially filled out without losing the info when I go back.

Netscape 4.70 is my browser
Eudora 4.3.2 is my email program
Agent 1.8 is my usenet reader (I use NewShark for binary downloads off the usenet)
WS-FTP LE 5.06 is my ftp program

Yeah, I'll wait. Strange things tho. For instance, one website I go to shows a different home page with Netscape than it does with IE. I don't understand that one, at all...an entirely different design. Weird.

If you are using Netscape 6.0 I would recommend upping it to 6 Preview Release 1.
I went straight from 4.76 to 6PR1 and never saw all the problems that are being reported by 6.0 users.
Love live Netscape!
Good Luck!
