OK, I think it is safe to say nobody likes pop-up/under ads!!! I don't think I have ever heard anyone say they have even followed one, much less bought something from the site that tried to pull them in with it!
When I was a reeaaal new newbie with my first computer (still am dumb-as-dirt about how all this stuff works), I was actually "intimidated" by those "things" that just seem to "pop" out of nowhere! Often, I would turn my computer off because I thought something was wrong with it!
Now, you would think someone in the business, would know they are pesky and unappreciated...so why do they spend their advertising $$'s on them?????

I think it is because there really is no correct method for advertisments on the Internet. this medium was not built with advertisers flooding and causing denial of service attacks on users pcs.
Someone pointed out that since so many Internet users now know about and use the free AdSubstract software to eliminate advertisments from your screen, the only other method is to get in-your-face. They can only do that with the pop-ups. And this just amounts to another abuse of javascript, encourging users to simply turn it off to avoid the hassles pop-up ads cause. That really ends up hurting e-commerce web sites because sop many of them employ legitimate uses for javascript to make shopping a terrific experience. Too bad so many web sites abuse it.

One reason is that once they get running, they can hit 100s of thousands or even millions of users, several times a day. They know the success rate, which might be only 1/10 of a percent, but that's in the thousands. And it is a bit like telemarketing- if you irritate enough people, you'll get a few suckers. jmho

Well, I have never followed a pop-up/under (I still find myself thinking I broke something every time they flicker and they still make me jump when they show up out of nowhere), but I will admit I have followed banners...
I have never even opened a pop-up/under! I try and close them as fast as I can! Banners at least are "fixed" and eventually make there way into my sub-conscious even though I think I have them tuned out! Then, all of a sudden, without any prior warning, I find myself clicking one!
Though, I can't see an advertiser getting their money's worth with the "pops", they must or I guess we wouldn't have so many around.
I was just curious. Like I said, I have never heard anyone "confess" to following one. Then again, I know lots of people who will not admit to reading the "tabloids" anywhere but in the grocery store anytime but when they are waiting in line to check out! Wonder how the publishers make any money that way!

It's a numbers game. Pop up a million ads, sell 50 items. Time shares do it... Free Vacation packages, just listen to a 3 hour speil. Give away enough vacations, someone buys the time share. Tele-marketers do it, call 200 people and have the phone slamed down 180 times, and you'll sell one person.
Who Need's a stink'n Sig. File?
