Do any of you know what the small 9 that is listed next to gas prices represents? I do, and was amazed not only at how many people didn't know, but how many people never gave it a second thought.

Well, I have always known it ( and so does everyone I know) to be 9/10 of a penny, just like the sign says.

Am I wrong? What else could it possible mean?

Gosh, if that is not right everyone I know is stupid, including myself!

The naive think it means a fraction of a cent, but those 'in the know' are aware of its true meaning.

Those aren't 9s they are upside down 6s and you'll always see three of them on most gas pumps. The three grades of gasoline will all have the hidden 6s (upside down 9s)in their prices. So when you look at a gas pump you are seeing 3 6s. We all know what 666 means so they have tried to disguise it. This is another of the Republicans efforts to strike a blow at the good...

Okay, here's my second but less popular answer. One tenth of a penny is a mill. The 9 represents 9 mills. Since there aren't any mills in anyone's pocket they conveniently round it up to the next penny for us.

Yes, there is a complex equation involved. Needless to say few of us can comprehend the logistics of it, but then again who expected otherwise? We're AW posters. They round it up.

Don't know.

Don't care.

Unless, of course, it would mean the difference between winning or losing a game of Trivial Pursuit.

Why have none of you bothered to ask the question? You all just accept things like this in your daily lives without even caring why. The 9 has nothing to do with a penny or a fraction of it, and in fact that 9 costs you more than you think. As I said it doesn't bother me that you all don't know what it is, what bothers me is that none of you care, and have never gave it a second thought. That is amazing, to me. To think that something in our everyday lives as prevalent as that little nine, has elicited nothing more than guesses. No search for truth, no desire to know its meaning - nothing. You are a pitiful bunch. You all see the tip of the iceberg - the 10% above water, without caring to see the mountain of truth beneath the surface. You all should be ashamed at your lack of desire to know the truth of all things. That little nine is just the beginning to your lack of knowledge and understanding of all things hidden in plain sight. Shame on you all.

Well here you have opportunity to enlighten us and instead use the time to try to elevate yourself by insulting us. I think that is a lot worse personal problem to deal with then not knowing what the 9 means fella guy. Get some nice.

9/10 of a gallon.

You're not buying a gallon, you're buying 9/10 for the price you see posted.

It is 9/10 of a penny. But as dollar amount on the pump doesn't show in 'tenths' the only way you would notice it if you pumped 100 or more gallons (which you will eventually) but in one stop, usually people fill their tanks with 18 to 20 gals. whatever.

But the point is moot, as pennies are not legal tender, if you try to pay in pennies,
the gas station attendant could refuse them, or any other business could.
Sure people accept them, but they are not legally bound to do so.

THANK YOU Rainybear, that is correct! You are buying 9/10th of a gallon of gas. Isn't amazing how few people know that. I thought so, too.

I have many priorities in my life.

The answer to this question is not one of them.

Dealing with insulting people is not one of them, either.

Will having this knowledge improve my life?

I seriously doubt it.

So, unless someone can show this ignoramus the importance of this knowledge, I still don't care.

Now here's the reason why. When gas prices began to increase a long time ago, one company came up with a brilliant marketing campaign. They realized that since most people are sheep, they never care for the details and just go through life baaaaing at everything. So they decided to "lower" their gas prices, and in order to do this and still make a profit, they began selling it by 9/10th of a gallon. This enabled them to actually raise the prices higher than their competitors and yet the price on the sign looked lower. Not only did they steal customers away from the other gas stations, they actually made more money per gallon. It worked so well, that it has now become standard. In fact as far as I know, there is nothing precluding me from opening up a gas station and putting a little 8 up there and selling 8/10th of a gallon for even more and you guys would probably flock to my station to buy my cheaper gas. Brilliant.

I understand that, but for my "insult", I was given a direct warning, and for hers, the generic "everyone" warning. Double standard? I know, I'll address it in an email.

jl, the primary reason that nobody knows that the 9 means 9/10ths of a gallon is that it's just not true. I have no idea what wacko screed you discovered this "fact" in, but could you provide a link so we might all have a laugh?

The price listed is per gallon. The reason the 9/10 of a cent doesn't show up at the price on the pump is because the price is done in whole cents.

If you do the math between the gallons pumped, the total price, and the price per gallon, it comes to the advertised price per gallon.

Even "if" the price was for 9/10 of a gallon, the differential would not be in 1/10ths of a cent- a 10th of a gallon of gas has a value of approx 14 to 15 cents, the the 1/10th of a penny in the price has no correlation to this amount, unless gas was a penny a gallon.

Look for the state seal on the pumps. The pumps are periodicly inspected to make sure the meter measures a gallon correctly and the price registers correctly.

You may be right in a marketing ploy, but it is 9/10 of a cent.

I'm dating myself, but in high school I remember the reader board read $.34.9

Yes so that would be about.35 cents a gallon.

Look at any reader board at any gas station, and it will say $1.69.9 or the little 9, that is the price per gallon.
