In a modified, perhaps lamer accord the world at least demonstrates some concern, and some good sense. Bush has gone to his room.

I'd like to see the Kyoto Protocol passed by the USA for no other reason than pollution control. Since the USA emits most of the world's air and water pollution, it only stands to reason that America would be paying the highest price for change.
What price is that?
Converting from oil burning as a means of energy. If I pay $1,000 a year in gasoline for my car to get around, I'd rather have a great electric car to get around in and the $1,000 go towards shutting down oil refineries.
Converting from more and existing coal burning and nuclear-fuel electric plants to electrically self-sufficient buildings and homes. A $50,000 tax credit spread over five years to convert most private homes to solar power and solar water heating. For all other buildings, a sensible system of tax credits to accomplish the same thing as homeowners would receive.
People -- it's your choice - either pay for more coal, oil, and nuclear power plants and all their waste and detrimental health effects on us and our kids or go for a forward-thinking approach.
Oh, yes. Oil companies and refineries on down tot he gasoline station will be permanently hurt and the energy concerns won't have any more influence to cheat and rob us for energy costs. Oh, well!

I saw an article about a move to convert in whole or part to ethanol fron corn as a fuel. It made it very clear that it would benefit US farm producers greatly, and many of them need it. It described the practicality, the relative ease of conversion of vehicles to burn it, and that it could relieve dependence on world supplies of oil.
But, and I almost couldn't believe what I was reading, one of the chief arguments against it was that the great farm conglomerates would then raise the price to previously unheard of levels if they saw a demand, and if the price wasn't paid then they would have an opportunity to create shortages and hold the country hostage for fuel.

Greed makes the world go 'round...." (or holds it HOSTAGE...)
There was an advert on NPR last month, about the corn/fuel thingy...But of course, let us NOT do anything which would benefit ALL...That would be so un-American...

Yes, Shosh, you are right. it canstantly amazes me when people act like doing things for the good of everyone, instead of enmcrouaging everyone to climb over each other in the heap, is somehow "unAmerican" and unwholesome. When did Americans get so blindsighted?
