DH & I are planning a vacation and are wondering when schools start across the nation. Also, when do they let out? We like to hit places when they are less crowded. Ours start around Aug 25th, and let out around June 7th. Wondering if that is the norm? Thanks!

We have year-round school here for the grade schools, so school is always in session.

Edited to add: this is in Southern California--AND: not all school districts adhere to this--some are on traditional schedules.

Here in the PA the amusement parks (Kennywood, Idlewild, Hershey Park) lobbied our powers-that-be to change the mandates to have school start after Labor Day. They cannot find enough people to properly run the parks and since they are marketing PA as a tourist state they felt they needed the help.

It seems the word has gotten thru. Our schools used to start at the end of August. Now it is right after Labor Day.

Back when I was in school, we would start around Aug 25th. My daughter (going into all day K-5!) will be going back on Aug. 7th. I was told when I was little the reason we started so much earlier is that we got out earlier, and we got out earlier because of the heat. Way back when there was no AC the classrooms would get extremely hot. Mind you this was in South Carolina, it does get quite warm here. But now that the date of return is even earlier that reason doesn't make much sense. Anyone know the real reasons?

Might have something to do with shorter school days. If your school district is like the one I'm in, it might also have something to do with the fact that the kids only go to school 4 1/2 days a week--every Tuesday kids are let out early due to Teacher's meetings.

Here in the Denver Colorado area we have lots of diferent schedules, some year round, some not. My kids were year round, so they got out in May. however, they will be attending a brand new school (some school district, just closer to home) so they do not start back until Sept 12th!. That is one long summer for a work at home parent!

I know one suburb here starts back Aug 25th and another Sept 4th. everyone school is different. It is not even the same within a school district.

A friend had 3 kids, 1 elementary, 1 middle school, 1 high school. They were off together 2 weeks at Christmas and 3 week in the summer. CRAZY!
