I got to thinking about this in the other thread when I mentioned people "fleeing the city". How I envy those pretty pink areas.
My county:
Crime Risk (vs National Average = 100%)
Total Crime - 339%
Personal Crime - 375%
Murder - 700%
Rape - 311%
Robbery - 345%
Assault - 143%
Property Crime - 304%
Burglary - 356%
Larceny - 215%
Motor Vehicle Theft - 340%
Other statistics:
Caucasian: 114,643
African American: 129,946
American Indian, Eskimo: 228
Asian or Pacific Islander: 1,735
Hispanic Origin: 1,820
Other: 173
Average Household Income:
$35,666/year
Compared to my town:
Personal Crime - 72%
Murder - 218%
Rape - 50%
Robbery - 7%
Assault - 10%
Property Crime - 16%
Burglary - 22%
Larceny - 9%
Motor Vehicle Theft - 16%
I was wondering how other's entire counties compared to their zip code...city v. country. Whether it is safe where you live, etc.
One city zip code I checked in my county had a murder rate of 1028%. That's over 10 times the nation average!

Not too bad considering we live in a large city and our house is in what is considered innercity. I thought it would be higher. But our particular little street is pretty quiet for the most part. The only trouble we seem to have are the suspects running through our yards while being chased by the police because we have the canal behind our yard.

On a bicycle trip once I ended up going through Gretna, LA around 10pm (I knew better but there were no options.) I don't think I've ever felt as threatened for my safety as on that section of my bike ride. I think Lance Armstrong would have had a tough time keeping up with me as I passed through that section of New Orleans... very scary.
Out of curiosity I looked up their zip code on the crime ratings page.
Gretna, Louisana zip (code 70053)
Total Crime - 738%
Personal Crime - 656%
Murder - 318%
Rape - 578%
Robbery - 1238%
Assault - 492%
Property Crime - 819%
Burglary - 917%
Larceny - 730%
Motor Vehicle Theft - 812%
New Orleans has some great food and some neat entertainment, but you can get in trouble real fast there if you aren't careful.
Caucasian: 32,914
African American: 3,452
American Indian, Eskimo: 381
Asian or Pacific Islander: 2,762
Hispanic Origin: 20,922
Other: 10,573
Average Household Income: $43,634/year
Unemployed: 5.85%
Occupation % White Collar: 51.29%
Occupation % Blue Collar: 48.71%
Education High School: 22,534

No kidding uaru. I once had to walk maybe 8 or 10 blocks back to the hotel alone from the French Quarter at night. I WAS QUITE NERVOUS.
The key to New Orleans is go in the DAYLIGHT...or at least don't go with people who go off and leave you.

And quite honestly, looking at Jackson's statistics and considering I walked all over the "deadliest mile" at night when I was STUPID, I am just happy to be alive.

I moved from California to Idaho about 10 years ago. Looking at the map on the link provided in the first post, it would appear to have been an improvement. However, since I have been here, I have experienced the following:
- My house was burglarized
- My house was vandalized (twice)
- My truck has suffered hit-and-run damage (over $500) while parked (twice)
- My spare tire was stolen
- I know two people who have had family members murdered
- I know one person whose child was sexually assaulted
while none of those things apply to the far longer time I spent in southern California and my parents, to this day, routinely leave the house unlocked when they go out. That's statistics for you, I guess.

I Like my neighborhood, I have always told everyone I think it is one of the safest places to live in the county; and the stats prove it.
We are right on edge of one zip code and the neighboring one is unbelievably low. It is the 2nd set of %'s and mine is the first.
Total Crime - 14%--3%
Personal Crime - 11% --3%
Murder - 22%---4 %
Rape - 11% -----6%
Robbery - 3% ---3%
Assault - 9% ---0%
Property Crime - 17%--3%
Burglary - 18% --4%
Larceny - 22% --1%
Motor Vehicle Theft - 11% ---3%
