What does "clear your cache in your browser" mean or better yet, how is it done. Don't know where else to post this. Hope someone can help this poor soul.

Hi Romantiques.
The only dumb question is the one not asked.
Which browser are you using?

Lord have mercy...now you're going to know why I say "dumb". I have no idea. It's a miracle that I've found my way around AW to even launch an auction. I use AOL if that means anything.

Hi, got to the top where it says "settings", click that and then "preferences". A little box will pop up. On that click "internet properties and www". When the gray box pops up click "delete files" and then when its done click "okay".

Thanks so much for helping me. This will be your challenge for the week I'm sure. First of all I don't see anything called "settings" at the top. Could it be another name on AOL? Also, if I get to the point of doing the delete files, will it interfere with any of my auctions already in progress?

Hmm, what version of AOL are you using? There's another way. Click the start button (you are using a Windows computer, I assume?) then click "settings" and "control panel". When the control panel pops up, there should be an icon marked "internet options". Click that and the gray box I mentioned above will pop up and follow the instructions from there. No, this won't interfere with anything.

AOL 5.0 has My AOL at the top of the screen,
click on that and then follow James first directions....or just do as he says in the second go round.

SUCCESS!! Thanks James. That was scary. I had to go take a tylenol. I will save your instructions. Now, another question...is this something to be done at any particular interval? I did it but I don't know why exactly. I'm trying to learn and I appreciate all of your help.

What happens is as you browse the internet each and every image and every page that you view gets saved to your hard drive so that when you visit the page the next time the photo and the page will load from your own computer instead of the remote server where the web site is hosted. This is supposed to make surfing faster. These files are stored in your cache. However, over a long period of time a very large amount of this stuff accumulates and it can really slow things down and even gum other things up. So it pays to delete them every couple of days and if you are online a lot do it every day.

Don't forget after you do what they suggested and clear your cache, you will need to go to your Recycle Bin and clear it. It always has 1500 unused files in it after I have cleared the cache. I have found that when I am working so much on the internet, it is a good thing to do this at least a couple of times a week on the cache.

Or if you want and are real sure you won't need the files you can set the wastebasket/recycle bin thing where it does not save anything at all so when you delete it real does delete.

Nowhere, until they're overwritten.

"Where do deleted things go?"
I'm not sure why, but thinking about things like that gives me the willies.

Where do deleted things go?
They are still there, only the first letter of the file name is gone. (until they get over wrote)

You can get programs that overwrite your deleted files multiple times so that even government agencies can't reconstruct your information from the latent imaiges on the magnetic media. I use those for my hard drive but for floppies I just pass them over my demag that I use at the surface grinder that has a magnetic chuck. I helped a buddy install a two pound box of thermite above his hard drive in Ohio. If you take the cover off without doing several things or if you pick the machine up and tilt it past about 5 degrees it ignites and melts the hard drive into a puddle of white hot liquid steel in a ceramic tray underneath. If that splits from the thermal shock it goes down through the desk and from my experience with thermite probably through the concrete floor underneath.
