I need some help in finding information on doctors. (I live in Indiana if that makes a difference.) I have a doctor that I really like. He is very nice and gentle. He is a family practitioner, so he takes care of the whole family. I just found out a couple of things today, however, that have me reevaluating him.
My first question is - How can I find out if there are any complaints against him or about his hospital privledges (such as being revoked, suspended, limited, etc)?
Second - What's the best way to find a new doctor? I can't seem to find a referral service in this area. Finding a doctor that is caring and competent, and accepting new patients, seems next to impossible!

there is a series of books put out by a group called Public Citizen. they list over 17,000 "questionable doctors"! the books are very expensive- the set costs over $300. your library may have it. the state licensing departments also have info- call them.

Ask your friends & co-workers about what doctors they use and the quality of care they've gotten from them, too.

You might try the Indiana Medical Association. I believe each state has one. They'll be able to tell you at the very least if the doctor's been sued, had his/her license revoked, etc. I don't know about complaints.
As to finding a doctor, I usually ask the most difficult, complaining, princess I know who she goes to - I figure if a doctor can please her, s/he can please me. It's not really scientific, but it's worked so far, and I've lived in four states in the last 7 years.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I haven't had any problems myself, but I have to think of my two daughters. What if something happens and they have to go to the hospital? If it's true that he's lost his hospital privileges (sp?), then what would happen? ARGH! I'm frustrated. I want to talk to him directly about it, but I want to have all of the info that I can first.
