I remember when kids could actually go outside and play all day - and be safe.

I remember when the really bad kids in school smoked cigarettes.

I remember when Mom called bars Beer Gardens - and said they were not fit places for women.

I remember when I actually rode one of those cool little metal cars that sell for so much on eBay now!

I remember when I was 12, in 1970 and we had a school play. It was involving solders from the civil was era. I asked my teacher if my friend Dave and I could bring our BB guns to school for this performance. The teacher said, "YES! what a great idea. Please make sure they are unloaded" We did and every thing went fine. Today, anyone who even speaks those words would be suspended from school. Teacher and student.

I remember a small metal tractor my grandma got for me when I was about 5 years old.

I also recall the term Beer Garden. My grandmother also said that. She spoke German as a child. It may have originally been Bier Garten.

I remember when kids talked about 'trading 45s' they were talking about music and not handguns.

I remember when I heard thunder it was really thunder and not a car playing rap music a block away.

I remember when there were a multitude of friendly family owned stores to shop at before Walmart became the shopper's Mecca.

I remember when Christmas decorations came out after Thanksgiving and not Labor Day.

I remember flying on a plane or applying for a job and not being screened like I was criminal.

I remember being able to joke around with women on the job and not having to have a lawyer monitor my actions.

I remember when the biggest concern after sex with a strange woman was whether you stayed for breakfast or not.

I remember when life wasn't governed by overly sensitive people and you didn't have to screen every comment or thought as to whether or not it was 'politically correct'.

I remember when there was no shame or guilt complex expected because you were a heterosexual.

I remember when coffee, a cigarette, and the newspaper were my first priorities in the morning before my priorities were switched to changing diapers, warming formula, and making baby talk.

Ah yes... I remember them well.

About those silver cartwheels ...I remember going in small towns out west and if you paid in paper the store owners turned their noses up at it. You knew they ran to the bank and traded them for silver dollars the next day.
The men drove pickup trucks but still wore a pistol out in the open and nobody was afraid what they would do with them.

I remember buying dynamite at the country store and the only caution was the first time the owner asked me a few questions to make sure I was not going to hurt myself with the caps. He was not that worried about the dynamite but the blasting caps were dangerous. And he treated you with respect although you were 12 once he could tell you were competant.

I remember going on the outer banks in NC and there were no permenant structures but a couple of fishing piers with restaurants. If you talked about building out there the locals would tell you you were nuts. One big storm and it is all gone. Now it is all $500k federally insured vacation houses.

It seemed like if you paid for something with a ten dollar bill, you would get nine cartwheels in change. No such thing as paper ones....

On a bit less cynical note I have some other memories

I remember when you pulled into a gas station an attendant rushed out to meet you, smiled, check your oil, your tires, and cleaned your windshield.

I remember when soft drinks only came in a bottle and they tasted great.

I remember when it took 5 seconds to find out there was nothing worth watching on TV.

I remember when soap operas and game shows were the only daytime programs, no Judge Judy, no Jerry Springer.

I remember driving into different towns and not seeing the same stores.

I remember going to the movies and having a usher lead me to my seat (people also realized talking to the actors on the screen was futile then)

I remember buying fruit that didn't have labels or stickers.

I remember going on car trips as a child and not being strapped down like an astronaut.

I remember going trick or treating on Halloween and having no concerns about real monsters.

I remember when:

- Hernando's Hideaway was the hit of the day (loved that song).

- My favorite toys were my little red record player with yellow records: Little Brown Jug and Camptown Ladies, etc., and a set of Jacks.

- Climbing under my desk and shaking like a leaf during air raid drills.

- When movies stars were glamorous. Rita Hayworth was my idol and I wanted to be her in the worst way.

- When Elvis was the coolest, sexiest man alive. The guys were jealous of him when he came on the scene because their girlfriends swooned over him. But, we knew the guys, too, thought he was cool.

- Masquerade Party and The Big Top on TV.

Edited to change Circus to Top. Apparently, my memory isn't as good as I thought.

- we were in awe of the teenagers with their ducktail haircuts, red lipstick, wide belts, and full skirts.

- we sang "Does your chewing gum lose it's flavor on the bedpost over night?" from Georgia to New York in an unair-conditioned(sp.?) station wagon.

- we shot the tops off my best friend's mother's tulips with our BB guns. That was after we turned over the brick edging to the garden looking for black widows.

- we cried while watching "The Alamo" because our heroes died. Also cried during "Old Yeller"

- we draped sheets over the edge of the top bunk and played "Wagon Train". Also pinned our hula hoops under our full skirts and had a hoop skirt.

I remember when a Saturday Matinee cost .25 and you saw two
full features, with cartoons before, between and after the movies.

We used to throw a blanket over the fender of a 1936 Jalopy my
father had in the yard, and pretending we were riding into the sunset.

An old blanket over the clothesline to make a tent, moving in the
red wagon for a seat and telling stories....

Climbing trees with the boys and always being more daring and
going to the highest part of the tree.

Swinging in an old rubber tire till you got so dizzy from twirling that
you couldn't walk straight.

Riding our bikes to the little stand a mile away and buying Hoodsie
Cups, vanilla and chocolate or if you were really lucky vanilla and
orange sherbert. The lids had pictures of movie stars which we collected.

Being able to afford the hoodsie cups because you collected bottles
along the road for a return of .02 each.

Selling Christmas cards and stationery door to door to help the family
afford little gifts to exchange at the holiday and not being afraid of any
harm coming to you. Why you could even go inside and have a hot
chocolate if you were invited.

Milking the cow early in the AM, feeding the chickens, slopping the hogs
gathering eggs, weighing and candling them for market and milking the
cow at night. Being so busy there was no time for getting into trouble.

Respecting your elders, and other peoples property. Saying please and
thank you. Everyday courtesies given without a second thought.

I remember seeing the Beatles on a black and white tv, and under John's name it said, "Sorry girls, he's married."

I remember my mom giving me a dollar and a note, and I could go buy her cigarettes (there was actually a couple of cents change).

I remember crying everytime I got a hair cut because hairdressers freakin' hate long hair. This was later solved by my never getting my hair cut by anyone who had hair above her/his shoulders.

The first time I bought gas for the car, it cost 27 cents a gallon.

My first car cost $125.
My first apartment cost $135/mo w/all utilities included.
My first semester at college cost $98 for tuition.

I remember jukeboxes were a nickel a song or six for a quarter.

I remember getting drunk for the first time when I was only 14. I almost puked on my boyfriend which I don't think was what he'd planned.

I remember when casual sex was called free love.

My dad took me to Woodstock - I was awed!

I remember Bobby Kennedy being killed and thinking how unbelievable it was that I was watching a man die on tv.

I remember the rat in a bottle of YooHoo rumors. The Paul is dead rumors.

I remember when "everybody" did cocaine.

I remember summers with my grandparents in upstate NY. Catching fireflies in jars to make lamps.

Microbes - It was like that all over out west - Montana Wyoming and down in Arizona/New Mexico. We drove all over out there before there were any Interstates. All two lane black asphalt and you had to go through each little town, but that was why we were there - not to rush around on a bypass. We went to some towns where the main road was still dirt and the sidewalks were planked.
Once we looked at grave markers and one said "hung by mistake" - never forgot that one.
I thought I knew Spanish but the Mexican way of speaking was different and they used half Indian words anyway. Still we could order breakfast OK where the migrant workers went in, and they would look at us surprised we would eat there, but it was the best deal in town. Ham and eggs and enough fried potatoes to feed a family for about $1.75 or $2.00 and
corn bread or tortijas. We'd buy a big restuffed potato for lunch later wrapped in newspaper to keep it warm for 25¢.
We used to go down to the dock and tie a single dollar bill around a bushel basket handle in North Carolina and throw it down to the boat and the guy would fill it up with a big coal shovel and have a kid run it back up the stairs to us.
People used to rake up their pecans in a wheelbarrow and dump them in the river because they were a bother and you could not give them away.
Poor people would do stoop labor from sunup to sundown picking the suckers off tobbacco plants for $5 a day. Not every thing was wonderful for sure.

I remember ....

... reading Tiger Beat magazine, cutting out the photos of Scott Baio, hanging them on my closet door, and forbidding my sister to even LOOK at "my man". ROFL!

... as a senior in high school, when the principal announced over the intercom that Challenger had exploded. I remember sitting there stunned, while the whole school seemed to stop breathing.

... watching Project Blue Book (UFO's) when I was a kid and being too terrified to walk into my dark bedroom afterwards.

... when McDonald's didn't have playgrounds. Or Happy Meals. And when their fries were actually good -- the best fries of any restaurant around.

... my mom making cupcakes for the whole class and sending them to school for special occasions.

... my first kiss. He slobbered all over me (yuck!) but I was too swept-off-my-feet to care.

... my parents (non-drinkers) mixing honey, lemon juice, and whiskey to give my sister and me when we had sore throats and were coughing.

... watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and seeing that girl put her gum behind her ear, and thinking it was a good idea. Let's just say that it wasn't!

... using aluminum foil and cardboard to make bullet-proof Wonder Woman bracelets. And wearing a "cape" (okay, a bath towel) and jumping off the picnic table, pretending to be Superman.

... swimming in my plastic kiddie pool with my dog (eeewww). Running through the sprinkler.

... when disco was cool. I even had a disco light that made colors flash all around my bedroom!

... having a skating party for my birthday one year. Hating having to lace up the rental skates with laces that were frayed and wouldn't fit through the holes. There was no such thing as in-line skates. Playing 1-2-3-Red-Light at the skating rink.

... arguing with my sister over whose turn it was to get the prize out of the cereal box (and there was some good prizes back then, too!). Digging my hand down into the box trying to find it, and my mom getting mad at me because the box was so out-of-shape that it wouldn't close.

I remember...

... when someone stole my new Thumbelina and drew all over her face

... playing with Kissy - and buying her clothes at Goodwill. Size 24 months then fit perfect

... drinking Derby Shake

... my Mom only wearing dresses - and chasing us around all day with a "warshrag"

... Grandma saying she had a "feesh in a poke"

... Disco dancing Friday - Saturday - AND Sunday ... and my mirror ball in my bedroom.

... Donny Osmond in Tiger Beat

... My first dance with my husband.

... Going into a bar with my father, setting at a table, and drinking Squirt. Yummy! I still get a warm and fuzzy feeling from that pop!

... Camping at Yough every weekend - and the cool camper my Dad made out of a bread truck.

... Cutting camping weekends short whenever "The Wizard of Oz" was on TV.

... Eating birch bark ~ Yummy!

... Peanut butter candy. I think it was peanut butter mixed with powdered sugar.

... Reunited by Peaches and Herb

... When my Mom walked into my third grade classroom and asked which one of the boys was my boyfriend - and he stood up and said it was him

... when everything in Johnstown had an orange tint - and everyone had jobs. Mom would wipe the table off each nite - and in the morning it would be covered with orange stuff.

... when you misbehaved any adult in sight could smack your butt - and if you told your parents you got it again!

... Uncle Duck - the coolest uncle in the world. He lived in a school bus in a junkyard. He died yesterday. I will miss him ....
