As an American, I was devastated by the attack on our WTC and Pentagon, the attack on all of the civilized world. I watched the nightmare unfold, day after day, trying to hold together while my emotions ran a range that I have never experienced before. I was shocked and angry, looking for immediate revenge. I was hurt and sorrowful, for the lives lost and the lives forever changed. I grew fearful for my future, my children's future and our freedom in our homeland. I watched as those around me suffered the same pain. I held on to those strong enough NOT to fear the worst. I proudly displayed my flag. The one emotion I could direct was my passionate pride in my country. It was not until tonight, at the age of 43 that I began to understand what it truly means to be an American. For generations the American family has fought for our country, for our freedom. I was taught history lessons, I understood the facts, but I did not understand the importance of courage and pride and how we could be tested The time has come for me to honor my flag and to do whatever it takes to join in this battle against terror: I will extend a hand to all my neighbors, regardless of color or religion, I will do my part to support the economy, I will accept the sacrifices I will be called on to make, but there is one thing I will no longer do - I WILL NOT be afraid! Our Freedom and the freedoms of the world are at risk, and in order to save them, it must be a heroic effort by We the People....
