Supplies:
One: 1-1/2" safety pin, nine: 1" safety pins, 35 tiny red beads, 26 white beads, 20 blue beads.

Directions:
Place the 1" safety pins onto the larger pin so that the smaller pins pass through the loop at the end of the larger pin and are unable to fall off. Follow the picture as a guide in order to place your beads onto the smaller pins.
Step One:
Begin by placing four blue beads onto the first pin on the left. Followed by alternating 1 red bead, 1 white bead, 1 red bead, and 1 white bead. Then close the pin. Follow 'Step One' for the next 4 safety pins.
Step Two:
For the remaining four safety pins alternate red and white beads. (5 red and 4 white per pin.)
Wear your Freedom Pin. Enjoy!

Great idea. I'd substitute paper clips for safety pins.

Meya, this is a fine project! I made one and I really like it. The pins with the beads move and that makes the flag look like it is waving.

I couldn't make the little safety pins pass through the end loop of the big one. Does anyone know how to do this? I ended up wiring them in position with very fine wire wrapped around the big pin.

Thanks,

Carlotta

Children at one of our local churches made gazillions of these pins and people are making donations which will be sent to the Red Cross...I saw one man put in a $20 bill and the little girls were sooo excited they insisted that he take at least 4 so he could give them to his friends.
GOD BLESS the USA

Hi Bobbin,

Use a flat-head screwdriver to slightly pry apart the coils at the end of the large pin.
Then after the smaller pins are in place tighten the coils with pliers.

Thanks kyriaki,

I did it! I was using small pointed beading tools before. Now I need to get more pins and beads.

I've been feeling a need to have flags and flag colors near by. I like wearing this pin and knowing that I made it here in the USA.

I went looking for beads and pins last weekend, and there wasn't a craft or sewing store in my area that had single color packages of beads. I ended up having to buy a mixed bag and picking out the red, white, and blue ones. Safety pins are in short supply here as well, but I did get enough made for myself and all the ladies at the hair solon I work at.

Good luck finding any of the pieces you need... I went to 3 different Wal-Marts, 2 Dollar Stores, and the largest craft store in the area and I couldn't even find a package of safety pins!

You can get both safety pins and beads at http://www.enterpriseart.com On the beads, look for what they call "E" beads -- they're glass and are a good size for projects like this (they're 3-4mm in size, slightly larger than a standard seed bead).

They've also got *lots* of inexpensive and neat projects like this, including kits that have everything you need.

(not affiliated with them, but I've bought from them in the past)
