The highlight of my week... condescension from a hopeless sinner and forgiveness, to boot.

Her opera performance won it for her. Not the prettiest girl, but what a spectacular voice.

Yeah her voice. Hope she can believe that also.

MEAT SHOW - MEAT SHOW -

That is the truth and a complete lack of honesty to admit it is sickening.

When are we going to have the same competition for men?

Meat show or not, women are allowed to be meat if they want to. Women are allowed to trade on their beauty if they want to.

Men trade in on their athletic ability to make money, get scholarships, etc. Why shouldn't women trade in on their beauty?

Sit in that kitchen woman! Be plain and homely!

Women sure can't win. If they're physically ugly, no one wants them. If they're physically beautiful everyone hates them.

Shows like this bore me, (so do most competitions), but I won't put it down.

To me, the woman's movement was to allow women to make their own decisions as to how they lived their lives. Feminists who decide what's right and wrong for other women, imnsho, aren't (feminists).

Amen Shadowcat & Fez.
What an embarrassing so-called tribute the whole charade is. I refuse to watch. It makes me ill.

Quoted from above:

TRADE IN? What is that, slave era thinking?
And how sad to think in terms of someone 'wanting' them. I recall in my 20's my family encouraging me to enter the Miss America pageant myself but even back then I found the thought nothing short of revolting.

Thinking in terms of measuring up to someone else's standards will always leave a bit of empty hollow where it most counts... your own individual soul.

Those who refuse to attempt to please others end up never pleasing themselves either.

james ROFTL! Super to see you again!

Ah but there's a difference between 'refusing' to attempt to please others and living only for it. Do not those who live only for pleasing others in some manner refuse to please themselves?

The chicken or the egg, lol

I see nothing wrong with such pageants. If women wish to compete in this way, they have every right.

Some women react to the pageant like it's the wellspring of all sexual discrimination. It isn't. The problem predates Miss America by a few thousand years.

If you want to get down to it, Miss America is simply one manifestation of our nation's obsession with female beauty -- an obsession shared by both sexes. Men may ogle women, but many women go to at least some extent to make themselves ogle-able. It's women who keep the multi-billion-dollar beauty and fashion industries in business. Not to mention that Vogue, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, etc aren't sitting unread in magazine racks across America.

How hypocritical to badmouth Miss America while many of you are doing your part every day to keep the cult of beauty thriving.

(And it should be noted that some of those contestants last night were not traditional beauties. Some weren't beauties at all -- the first runner-up, Miss Massachusetts, comes to mind. Miss Oregon wasn't a stunner either. But as I said earlier, her singing ability was remarkable and I think in the end, that's what won it for her.)

I find it kind of interesting that when discussions of prochoice/righttolife happen on this board, most posters (including me) think women should have the right to choose whether or not they want this procedure.

But according to the posts here, they shouldn't have the right to choose whether or not to support or take part in beauty pageants?

If you find these pageants repulsive, fine, don't watch, support, or enter. Boycott the sponsors even. As to slave mentality, I doubt any of those women was forced to compete. That would be slavery.

I just think that "feminists" who define other women based on their self-righteous views of what a feminist should be are just as oppressive as the people they claim to oppose.

Hey! I will have you know that I havent plucked my eyebrows in forever, nor worn maekup. Why, I could start a new fad, by curling the hair on my legss and do a pompadour "do" under my armpits, but then I wouldnt be able to type. So watch it there, bub.

And as far as trading on their athletic ability I was 240 lbs in High School and could move like greased lightning and they just begged me to play football - but I thought it was an silly waste of time to get all hyped up emotionally about how much better my school was than another that was full of fine kids just as good as ours and go bust my knees to prove some point that existed only in their minds.
The fact that the couch was dumber than a rock and brutish only cemented my conviction it was stupid.

Am I being lumped into the "hypocritical" group? If so, go back and read what I wrote again.

AFAIC, the show lost all entertainment value when the PTB canned Bert Parks. I haven't bothered to pay attention to whether or not the show was still running since then.

Heck, I don't care if women want to parade naked through the casinos in Atlantic City, if that floats their boats. I don't care if MEN want to parade naked, either(I do reserve the right to point, though).
