Secretary of State, Colin Powell wants to narrowly target Bin Laden and al Qaeda in Afghanistan to preserve international concensus.
This will allow terrorist organizations and the governments who host them to continue recruiting, training, and carrying out terrorist attacks against the west and moderate Arab governments who are trying to rid themselves of violent extremeists in their own countries.
We don't need another temporary fix which resulted from the Gulf War. Powell needs to get his head out of his #$$.
Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, favors a wider military response hitting terrorist targets in a variety of countries including Iraq.

But, since these terrorists are intrenched in 60 countries, including the United States,
how would a wide scale war in the MidEast solve the problem?

But all those countries like Iran and Syria are jumping on the bandwagon so they must be going to immediatly stop all terrorist activity in their borders. Right?

The only "wide scale war" will be in Iraq.

LoL
All we have to do is rattle our sabers and lo and behold, terrorism ends...a miracle!...sort of like walking on water.
It may get a few votes for George too.
Powell knows better. He is not clueless.

This may be true for the Taliban because of the opposition in the north but not for Iraq.

sasoony,
I was just being facetious about the sword rattling. I don't think that any armed conflict will solve this problem.
Even if Iraq were wiped off the face of the earth, terrorists would still be in business.
They hate Americans and in my opinion, justifiably so. Terrorism will never end until we can address the reason for their hate.
The people of Afganistan feel oppressed and the intrusion of Israel and the United States into their country is resented. What right does the United States have to impose our values and lifestyle on another country?

Helen, I believe you are sincere but your perspective seems naive and idealistic.
Pakastanis who state that they support the Taliban also admit they wouldn't want to live under their rule.
Arab citizens state that they hate/resent the U.S. because we supply Israel with weapons. Arabs tried to destroy Israel with a conventional war and lost so now they justify terrorism as a means to destroy Israel.
Now we have terrorists cutting the throats of stewardesses and flying airliners full of passengers into the towers. Innocent people jumped to their deaths to escape the pain of being burnt alive.

Helen, would you stop referring to Israeli intrusions into Afghanistan as if such a thing has or will occur? Someone not knowing any better might believe you're writing something that reflects reality.

The United States is hardly trying to impose "our values and lifestyle" on Afghanistan. You made a mistake and meant the Taliban, right? Or don't you care what they do to women there? That isn't about Islam. It's about a bunch of ignorant fanatics who have subjugated the basic human rights of Afghani women in pursuit of their twisted religious agenda. What part of THOSE values and lifestyles don't you understand, Helen?

Moral relativism is disgusting.
I bet two weeks ago if I had posted a "look guys, there's this awful militia in Afghanistan called the Taliban and look what they are doing to the people there" thread some of these very enlightened voices would have been clamoring for the U.S. to overthrow 'em.

Palestinians celebrated the terrorist attack on the towers. Young men in Egypt were watching the WTC towers in flames and were smiling as they shook each others hand and congragtulated the terrorists.
I'm not concerned about these idiots. I'm concerned about the prospect of biological and nuclear terrorism.
Terrorists and fanatics will always be with us. We can't eliminate every one of the them. But we can eliminate the governments who would sponsor and supply them with weapons that can take out entire cities.

I understand human rights abuse and it's not located only in the Taliban.
It's all over the world. It's in Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Asia, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka...only to name a few.
And of course I care.
What is your point?
