The last few days my dog has been wandering around the house whining and she is stealing every stuffed animal she can get her teeth on from my daughter's room and burying herself in them. Sometime you just see her nose sticking out.

Some of the stuffed animals she's dragging around the house are 2-3 times as big as she is.

How old is your dog? Has your daughter left home? What do you think the reason is she is sooooo lonely?

She could be having a false pregnancy--which often cause a dog to "nest" as you describe & treat stuffed animals as "babies."

Or, she is predicting the next large earthquake...

False pregnancy, I'll bet. I had a Great Dane that did all that...plus pulled all the covers off our bed and made a nest in the living room. She even had milk, poor baby.

Wow, that is something I had never heard of.

My large Maine Coon has been very clingy (not his style) follows me, talks to me, gets up on the desk to sleep and chats at me,
if I leave he follows again. My husband & I think this change is because I have been sad and the cat has picked up on my mood change and is trying to console me with his presence. You know what, it works, just stroking him and chatting is wonderful.

My dog did that last February when we had a neice visiting that was nursing her baby.
It set off some kind of mommy clock in my Yorkies head and now she does it every few months.
She would cuddle up with them and try to get the stuffed animals to "nurse". When they didn't she would whine to me like I could fix it.
It is about the saddest thing. I think she really thinks they are alive.
I told our Vet about it but he didn't seem to believe me.

LoL...I don't have an answer but it reminds me of my dog's insistence that all shoes in the house should be in a pile in the middle of the living room floor!

Just as soon as the kids removed their shoes, he whisked them off to the "pile".

I thought it might have something to do with the mothering instinct, but, you would think she would pick babies that were smaller that she is.

My daughter thinks it is fun to take her stuffed animals away and throw them accross the room and watch her drag them back to her nest. She has a strange sense of humor.

Helen,

It sounds like your dog wants everyone's shoes in one place where they will be easy to find. Maybe you can teach him to organize your house.

I'm beginning to think all these animals are picking up on our feelings from the attacks. My *male* dog has been stealing clothes and guarding them. He usually only does that if we're both gone all day, but he's been doing it even if we don't leave the house for days...

Not trying to scare you, but if you live in an Earthquake prone area, you might want to take a short trip out of town.

Just something to think about.

My thoughts on this issue have gone 'Un-Surveyed' and may not be of importance to the P.T.B.

wow! This is so wierd to read this now. My dogs and cats have been following me around like I am a pork chop or something. I cannot turn around and they are right behind me, or laying next to me, like right now, while I am on the computer. All 4 of them! This had been going on for the last week!

Our dog (an Austrailan Shepard) can read our moods very well. He normaly likes to play, but for a week after the WTC thing, he would just come up and lay his head in your lap.

Loved pets are sensitive to the moods of their owners. All my cats have been that way in the past and we had a Weirmaraner who was the most sympathetic animal in the world.
When I was at a very low point on one particular day he came into the living room,
placed his paw on top of my hand which was resting on my knee. I was bent forward crying (all alone I thought) he cupped his paw over my hand and leaned his head on my shoulder. Ya can't stay sad for long with a 90 lb. dog giving you unconditional love.

I forgot to add that he liked to sleep whith his head on one of the shoes. He preferred a Nike pillow.

Organize??? I'm afraid that my creativity would suffer in an organized environment and the dog would be unhappy.

Awww Zilvy, the image of that scene is just too precious. But you're right, when they want to comfort you, it's almost impossible to resist! Just last night I got upset over a news story and Gunther climbed into my lap to hug me and then started licking me to death! My blue mood didn't last very long.

Thanks for the laugh! It makes me feel better about having a bird that meows, hammers nails, trucks backing up, laser blasts and bombs going off...

My fluffy Persian Cat still spends his days asleep on his back and he does not go out at night either. Any meaning that can be attributed to that behavior?
