I received my bank statement and with it was a notice that they were going to charge $10 for a deposit receipt for each deposit made at the bank. Is this legal??

Needless to say, I'm going bank shopping next week...

This stuff is usually regulated at the state level. Most states are fairly liberal with allowing banks to screw their customers. The only real power you have is, as you suggest, move your accounts to another bank.

You're saying that your bank charges you $10 to make a deposit to your account?

a bank chargeing to deposit money is a bank that will be out of business in less then 60 days...

No one in there right mind will pay to deposit and then pay on some withdrawls as well Just as easy to keep it in your pocket and cheaper..

My bank charged for every check deposited.

Find a Credit Union you can join. I haven't used a bank in 10 years. My Credit Union doesn't have any charges, except for blank checks for my account. No minimum account balances either. My credit union even allows deposits of British Pounds Sterling for no charge.

Funny you should mention this - I just opened a new account today because my old bank merged with another and started charging for a bunch of things well before sending us notice in the mail that they were going to do so.

My new account has a $100.00 minimum balance to avoid a $5.50 monthly fee. No charges for check printing orders. No charges for any normal transaction such as processing check, auto payment or deposit. $2.00 to process Canadian checks. $2.00 for returned items. Pays 1.1% for balance over $1,000 and the rate goes up on a sliding scale. Free cashiers checks , money orders, and travelers checks. Foreign wire transfer $32.50. They pay the first 8 foreign terminal charges a month if you use your MC debit card / ATM card at another bank (handy on vacation). Free online banking.

I work for a bank (Trust Officer in the Trust Department) and I've never heard of such a thing. Of course, I live in a very small town where the town folk would run us out on a rail if we pulled something like that. In fact, we just implemented totally free checking and overdraft protection. Not anywhere as good as gravid's new account, but I have a free account w/no min. balance. $3 return check fee. (The other good stuff, I don't get for free until I'm 55.)

I can't believe a bank would try to charge for deposits (that's just an expression, I believe you). The only thing I've heard like that are some limited accounts where you have to do all your banking via ATM's and more than X number of in-bank transactions get charged.
