We need to invest heavily on this new form of security for our nation. With this we can trace the movements of suspected terrorist, drug dealers and gun runners.

Not to mention dead beat parents anyone with a warrent out against them - parking violators - people with overdue library books and political enemies of whoever controls the system like people who belong to militias, ACLU, opposing party, minority parties, labor unions, newspaper reporters, government employees meeting with the "wrong" people.
Yep we also need to buy 300 million rubber Nixon masks.

Gravid, I found my old one. It's going to come out after a long retirement for Halloween.

I can also wear it to the next Snooper Bowl.

Gravid,

Yes, but that is the price one has to pay in order to be safe again. In Charlotte, NC the eye scan techonology has been working great at their airport.

Personaly if a few deadbeat parents get caught along the way, I won't loose any sleep over that.

I am not willing to give up any of my rights for some ephemeral feeling of safety. There are ways around any technology...but give up a right to the government, and you will never get it back.

Ditto what toke just said ( Hi toke! ).

I guess some people won't be happy until they have to surrender all their rights, in order to save them.

Errrr... Would you believe we're not actually surrendering our rights; we're just suppsoed to give them to the government for safekeeping. Kinda like putting your money in a bank or your furs into cold storage. Yeah, that's the ticket. And I'm sure the government will give them all back to us when we ask for them, right?

Then again....

Giving up rights?

You mean like how now if you want to fly you have to submit to body scans and luggage searches?

So how many of you think we should take back our right to not be searched. Would you feel better flying then?

"Remember the temporary income tax?"

I knew that you are old, Toke, but not that old.

Funny how some of the loudest proud americans often seem to have no clue what it is to be an american.

I thought the topic was using biometric technology to trace the movements of suspected wrogdoers, but I see now that it has been changed to walking through a metal detector and having your bags x-rayed.

Please excuse my misunderstanding.

I am sure they have a data base of all terrorist faces before they try to enter the country.
I guess I must be the only one that can imaigine being on the wrong side of the law and being tracked down. Everyone else must be so pure of heart and removed from any controversial politics or organizations that they will never be out of favor. Certainly no Libertarians or Branch Davidians, no ACLU members or Scientologists. No Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormans.
I can see being pulled in because my face showed up near three or four crime scenes and I need to explain why I was in the neighborhood each time.`Or being pulled in because I had lunch with the wrong person who is organizing a petition or is a reporter for a news network and I might be whistleblowing.
I wonder if people really realize how powerfull this software is.

Actually Mr Potatohead, it is about using whatever means we have at our disposal to keep Sept. 11 from ever happening again. It is about trying to save lives.

Sorry if my addressing you by name goes against some unspoken code here (per Antiquary's comments) but I don't want any confusion as to whom I am addressing. Somepeople here take every post to be about them unless specifically addressed elsewhere.

If some posters here would be so kind as to explain to me when I should use a name and when I should not, I will try to catch on.

Thanks,

Proud American!

I take no exception to being addressed.

Yes, but where do you draw the line?

You could make it a capital crime to be outside your house without a valid travel permit and biometric identification documentation. That would likely result in more safety for those with the appropriate documentation, but who would want to live like that?

Mr. Potatohead,

Thank you for not taking exception to my posting directly to you.

Where to draw the line is indeed a sticky question? I tend to like my privacy too.

I also don't like getting scanned and searched at the airport but I do feel it a neccessary inconvenience. And so far, at least, there has been no attempt to stop me on my street and scan and search me.
