A different kind of war to say the least.

I am so glad we are doing this.

I agree, good thinking on the part of the gov't. Feeding the hungry ought to count for something coming from Infidels!

I'm sure the Taliban will try to steal it. They have not been too worried about their people starving before and I doubt they will care now.

deliteful: it is certainly not a different type of war for us. The US is known for our humanitarian treatment of peoples, both enemy & ally, during times of war.

Sorry Bunnicula,

I could have sworn this was the first time we had ever dropped bombs and food to the same place in the same day. But I'm sure you know best.

True. At the close of WW2 in Europe the Germans considered it very important to make it to the western front to surrender to the Americans and British rather than surrender to the Russians.

There is a movie, a great satire called "The Mouse That Roared". It is about a country that was very poor and needed a miracle. They decided they'd declare war against the US and then when they'd most certainly lose the US would pour funds into the country and rebuild it. Funny movie, starring the great Peter Sellers.

Yes, I think it's really great...how we scare the hell out of everybody so that they run for the border.

Then we bomb our way through the border in order to deliver food. Isn't that clever?

We look like good samaritans with bombs.

hjw, think about it. In WW2 both the Americans and Russians had weapons aimed at the Germans. Why do you think they took great risks to reach the western front (Americans) to surrender?

It may pain you to have to admit that the US is really a compassionate country, but our treatment of our enemies does give that come credence.

Yes, I suppose you're correct. The right thing to do would be to sit here whining & crying about the Bad Men who attacked our country, starting & whimpering at each plane crash, car wreck, and outbreak of flu as possible evidence that the Bad Men have done it again--because perhaps if we are good Boys & Girls and show enough belly, surely they won't hurt us again... We certainly shouldn't take steps to fight back! That would anger the Bad Men and perhaps hurt someone innocent and that, of course, is so much worse than our own innocents being hurt. Besides...we deserve to be hurt don't we?

The terrorists made me do it, and I am currently living in fear of a plummeting case of spam!!

Trying to keep in mind what is important and that words on this board shouldn't raise my blood pressure, real life is doing that just fine.

You know a case of Spam from 30,000 foot probably reaches a terminal velocity that will make it work about as well s a cluster bomb.
Would Carol Shelby's Chili count as bioligical warfare?

I wasn't going to mention this, but ... I've been paying close attention to the moon since October 1st. It was big, brilliant and perfectly round that night. But every night since I've noticed the lunar disk gets a little bit smaller. It's like the outer edge is being pared off. If it keeps up at this pace I fear that by the 21st we won't be able to see the moon at all. Do you think it's related to the terrorists?

Why do we always have to send the food. Why doesn't Iran, Siria, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Yamin, or Kewait send in the food and aid. I'm so sick of our country taking care of everyone else's problems.

We're sending food for the same reason ebay is running A4A, it's good PR!

I have to agree with Helen.

I'm skeptical about the humanitarian motives. I think it is just a clever PR stunt.

The food is being dropped to lure the civilian population back to the danger zones and to fatten them up for the kill.

Humanitarian. Right. It's as clear a political sop to detractors as ever could be found.

There are few more inhumane ways to kill large numbers of people that are formalized into a repeatable tool for it than bombs and missiles.

Oh, I know, all you experts on war will say, again, "war is hell", "it's the nature of war", "in war, some innocents will be killed", no doubt expressing an affinity for John Wayne movies but at the same time exposing your ignorance for all to see, but in reality this job could be done much more efficiently than with bombs but someone has to have the balls to get their hands dirty with blood that no imagined followup 'humanitarian' ludicrous attempt at an apology can wash off.

PR undoubtedly, but isn't it possible that starving people who are kept in the dark are thinking they are the target of the bombardments (all the leaflets in the world wouldn't convince them otherwise) but food...now that will get their attention.

The Taliban is not going to be able to convince even the uneducated "women" that they are providing this mana from the heavens.

Also, in trying to persuade those opposing the Taliban faction that our intent to go only/primarily for terrorists...food to a hungry man is pretty convincing!

edited for clarity (I can only hope)

No leaflets, but transistor radios tuned to one station, telling them in their own language whats going on, or what others will say 'what they want them to hear'. Since only about 25% or less of the pop. is literate, they have to do it this way.

Thanks NearTheSea, I remembered the radios after reading your post...now back that information up with food and I'll be more likely to question what the Taliban is really up to...

Cases of Spam would convince the civilian populations that they are the targets of our genocide better than anything else we could drop.

I don't know about the Taliban, but that video and translation of bin Laden was frigging creepy to me.

I believe we can wipe out the Taliban, but I doubt that will stop terrorists. Alot of them probably blended right in with the refugees when they crossed over into Pakistan for all we know.....

I heard that the Bin Laden video was broadcast on Afghani TV and I'm a little confused. I thought that owning a television was punishable by death or imprisonment in Afghanistan. So why do they have a TV station?

NearTheSea

Do ya think that transistor radios would survive being dropped from an airplane?

For some reason, I've been having visions of a desert littered with used clothing and food. If you can't sell it at Goodwill take it over and dump it on Afganistan.
