National Public Radio had an interesting program this morning about Muhammad Ali. I suppose it was timed to coincide with the upcoming release of the film Ali starring Will Smith.
http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2001/dec/ali/011219.ali.html

To me Ali is one of the Sixties more memorable figures - not only as the heavyweight champion of the world, but because of his association with the Nation of Islam, his conscientious objector status, and his refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Army. He stood by his principles at great cost. As the NPR interview emphasized, how many well-paid athletes would be willing to take a political stand today? Ah, the Sixties. I miss 'em.

I adore Muhammad Ali. Great boxer; noble human being.
(Torn about seeing the movie, though -- you going to? Please let me know what you think of it if you do.)

Plsmith, I'll probably see the movie. I haven't read any reviews yet. My husband is a great boxing fan, so we'll probably make an evening of it.

It certainly took great courage to do what he did. And he has always been one of my favorite boxers (I'm a big fight fan). The movie is one I'm looking forward to, but since I have to work both days this weekend, I'll have to wait to see it.

If you like Ali and/or boxing, you MUST see "When We Were Kings", a documentary about the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" between Ali and Foreman. Probably the best boxing film ever made, with "Raging Bull" a close second and "Fat City" in third.

plsmith, I just saw the story of the lord of the ring, Ali. It wasn't a heavyweight but still good. Will Smith did a good job as Ali and I felt I'd taken a beating by the time the Ali/Liston fight was over. The photography was strong, but the real character development was lightweight.Although a somewhat long movie, it still needed fleshing out. I think I'll try to find the movies denisv mentioned.

I miss the drugs.

Also I like Ali. I liked him even before he was Ali. My mother was a boxing fan. Forced to watch it as children.

Thanks for the update, Saabsister. Recently here on TV they ran a biographical movie in which Ali played himself, surrounded by actors ( - Ernest Borgnine as a manager, for instance). Can't remember what it was called but it reminded me that Will Smith just ain't The Real Deal and so I, too, will be after renting those movies Denisv mentioned.

There's something insanely attractive about a beautiful man shouting out loud that he's pretty...

Muhammed Ali had good self-esteem. Lots of self-confidence. Can't wait to see the movie.

Zen-less in Seattle LOL ... well that explains a lot!

zenless in Maryland

I had to look up zen posting and I found this...

"Why do people post such nonsense to this group? One of the central points of Zen is intuitive understanding. As a result, words and sentences have no fixed meaning, and logic is often irrelevant. Words have meaning only in relation to who is using them, who they are talking to, and what situation they are used in. Some postings are indeed nonsense; other postings appear to be nonsense at first but this is because the meaning is all between the lines. Zen and poetry have gone hand in hand for centuries

More Zen for you, Helen, from a real pro...

''Well, OK, the truth is there is some lego used in the construction,
and it is not quite as large as I would like it ---
it is still under construction,
I will ask my cousins for their old lego kits to add to it.
But it is only a metaphor for the true bridge, which is in your mind,
and anyway I'm doing a special offer on the toll this week:
four four and tuppence farthing, I will let you
not only go up the bridge to heaven,
but back down to earth afterwards--two crossings
for the price of one.''

50,000 bonus-points to the first one to name the author...

edited to make it more odd
