I just saw a good photography exhibit here at the Corcoran. About a dozen photographers spent time at some of the Nature Conservancy's sites and their interpretations of the sites are offered in the exhibit "In Response to Place: Photographs from the Nature Conservancy's Last Great Places". The artists include Annie Leibovitz, William Wegman, Lee Freidlander, Sally Mann,William Christenberry and others equally good. The styles are diverse - black and white and color, dreamlike and stark, monumental in size and also initimate in scale.
This exhibit will travel over the next few years to Houston, San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Detroit. Catch it if you can.

saabsister,
Thanks so much for letting me know! What a great group of photographers in one show!
I hope that there is an exhibition catalog. I'll come home with a pile of books anyway. LoL!
My favorite photography is black and white. Actually, I can't remember seeing color photography exhibited by major photographers so this will be interesting.

Enchanted,
Yes, Edward Steichen is one of my favorites too!
I had an interesting experience in a photography class that was related to Steichen's use of soft focus. This was one of my first photo classes and I was really concerned that the instructor's photo's were not sharp. Actually I felt a little sorry for this teachers efforts and wondered if he had a vision problem.. While I was in the lab working my ass off to produce every detail, he was bringing in his unfocused prints as examples of excellence. Finally I realized that sharp, hard edge focus was not the way to go. LOL!!!
Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand and Alvin Langdon Coburn are also among my favorites.
I hope that I can see the show that saabsister recommended but my time schedule is not looking good and today is the last day.

(Once I bought the catalog at a Cindy Sherman exhibit - not for $50 but still expensive. About a month later I saw the same book at Barnes and Nobles for $3. Acck!!)

I was able to order the catalog, "In Response to Place: Photographs from the Nature Conservancy's" on Amazon for 35.00.
It looks like I'm not going to be able to see the show today. I've been reading the political news online and failed to find out about that exhibit in time to schedule a trip.
Thanks for the info! I'll be looking forward to seeing that catalog.

Hi saabsister!
The catalog from Amazon was just delivered. The photo's are beautiful!
I still prefer black and white photographs. My favorite in this catalog was Annie Leibovitz's photo of the Pitch Pines and Gray Birch in the Dwarf... located in New York.
The Wegman dog's are cool too. Some of the photo's appear a little contrived but I just love those dogs!
I would like to see the indonesian photo's....the color appears much too intense in the catalog.
I'm sorry that I missed that show. Thanks again for telling me about it!!!

Helen, glad the book arrived. I'm usually partial to B&W photography, but some of the color photography in that show was outstanding. Hope Sandrow's photos were grouped together. The scale was just short of colossal - like standing in the ocean and having the waves wash over you.My husband liked Misrach's "Battleground Point #20". I have to admit to liking it too. I liked Leibovitz's photos also though at this point I've seen too many photos that look like the California coast (even though Leibovitz's were of New York and the Adirondacks of a favorite of mine). I think Wegman is lost without his dogs. I only liked one of his photos. I think at this point he's overdone it.
I like Arbus too. I'm not familiar with Keene. I'll have to go hunting.
