U.S. Troops Fire at Italian Diplomat's Car in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. troops opened fire on a car carrying an Italian diplomat who holds a senior position in Iraq (news - web sites)'s U.S.-led administration, killing his Iraqi interpreter, American military sources said Friday.
Pietro Cordone, senior adviser on culture for the U.S.-led authority, was unhurt, Italian Foreign Ministry sources said. Cordone has been leading efforts to recover priceless antiquities looted from museums and archeological sites since the fall of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).
The U.S. military sources said Cordone's car was shot at after it repeatedly tried to overtake a U.S. convoy near Tikrit, Saddam's hometown.
Soldiers repeatedly warned the car not to overtake, the sources said, and opened fire when they thought the vehicle was trying to ram them.
Many Iraqis accuse U.S. troops of being too quick to open fire and failing to follow rules of engagement.

I've seen several links to OTWA on Vendio. All Vendio wants out of these no-expense boards is page hits and web ranking and maybe a cheapie 'bonus' for their users.

I didn't realize that a link to OTWA was a problem at this stage of the game. They have linked their board here and to Ebay Outlook.

twelvepole,

It's laughable that you criticise what you believe is an infraction of a guideline while you proceed to break that same guideline by continuously insulting everyone else.

Do you have an opinion about the topic?

Good point, Helen.

But then all I know is that one boy wears a dunce cap here and the other one (who supposedly has me on ignore but already messed up and talked to me) is wearing a dunce cap over in the Other Online Auctions forum.

Where have I insulted anyone on this message board, in this thread Helen?

I only give as was received, you should know with your back-door insults...

Having actually been there and served... they aren't doing anything wrong.

I have disagreed with a few people on a message board but never wished death on any of them.

My AZZ.

How many times did these people need to be warned before our guy opened fire. DO they think they were back in Italy touring down the highway.

They should be glad they weren't opened up on with a Maw duce.

Actually the soldier was a pretty good shot,
only had to fire ONE round.

"Rules of Engagement"
"Many Iraqis accuse U.S. troops of being too quick to open fire and failing to follow rules of engagement."

Good God! there are no rules of engagement in combat and it's time the left & Iraqis understand that. I'm glad our troops are starting to shoot first, ask questions later.

It's also time for politics to get out of this hit run war & let our troops finish the job they were sent to do.

The undecided 10 would be a good squad with Gen. Microwave Bradley leading the charge.

Then Send in Toad Kennedy & the rest of that dipstick bunch that want to hold up money for the troops, so they will not have equipment to fight a hit & run type war.

The left wants to see our troops be hand cuffed, just like they did to those in Vietnam.

They would jump for joy if the death count goes to one per hr, as it did in Vietnam.

Should the left get in control of our government leadership, it will happen. Just as it happen in Vietnam.

1) You might have missed the announcement, you nkow, the one thattook place on aircraft carrier... the one where Bush announced an end to the combat phase of the war.

2) It's very hard to respect and give any credence to anyone that resorts to playground type antics such as bastardize peoples names as some type of childish insult.

Fred,

"Should the left get in control of our government leadership, it will happen. Just as it happen in Vietnam"

The right is "in control of our government" right now and the execution of the war is a disaster. What, for example, happened to the exit plan?

Having been weaned on right wing reactionary radio minimalizing the opinions of any dissenting voice through sarcastic naming can be thought to be the norm and I'm sure fred means nothing by it.

It's amazing that one would point to the lessons that should have been learned in Vietnam as some sort of justification for this most recent misadventure in military land.

Fred,

Bush strutted out onto the aircraft carrier and declared the combat over and yet we continue to lose soldiers daily. Nobody from the left has "handcuffed the troops as you say. Congress provided the funds. Bush certainly made it more difficult for the troops by his unilateral approach to the war. It was Bush who turned the war into a quagmire...and wrecked the U.S. military...not the left. It was Bush who sent too few troops into an unwinnable war. And it was Bush who sent the troops to war without a post war plan. So now, they are still there dying every day in a war with no end in sight.

All that Kennedy wants in exchange for the unlimited funds that Bush requests is an accounting of how this money will be spent. We read, for example, of troops who are writing home for items that should be provided such as night vision glasses. They are charged for meals while in the hospital. Money should not go to Halliburton while our troops are being deprived of all that they need.

Then, all that you can do is blame the war on Clinton or even more laughable the Democratic candidates for president.

In combat if you want to go home you learn quick to shoot quick at anyone that looks at you funny moves odd or is pressing in on you for no apparent reason.
They can make all the formal rules they want but these guys want to live to come home and that's how you do it.
Anybody that looks cross eyed at a guy carrying a loaded auto weapon who has been shoot at and lost buddies is plain nuts.

I sort of liked the way President Bush landed on the carrier. It is a thrill to land on one, but even better thrill to take off on one. Even better at night.

Yes, he did say the combat phase was over. It was executed very well. We are now in the mop up phase. To those who do the job it is COMBAT. Rooting out the bad men and women & others while executing the exit phase at the same time. Training the Iraqi people to take over.

The US Military and President Bush are doing a great job in spite Toad Kennedy & his crowd & the FAB 11. "Gen. Microwave Bradley" I like that!!

I have yet to see any sort of Plan from the left on anything.

Kennedy & his crowed did the same thing during Vietnam it cost lives, gave aid & comfort to the emeny then as it does now. He wants to use the money for the BIG DIG.

I paid for my meals during my hospital stay. The left should have changed it years ago.

Night Vision is issued to those who need them. None combat personnel do not need them. Should they need them it will be issued.

Sending night vision by mail to a combat zone is dumb. Those who issued night vision must account for them after each use. There is a good reason not to issue night vision to those not in need & not to mail them into a combat zone.

Helen We got one problem? I am not on the right or left side. I belong to with 70%
that want our troops to fight a war the way it should be.

When was the last time any political leader said "I'm for the America people, having the Highest standard of living in the world and affirmative action depends on the lowest pay scale."?.

Latest polls indicate that over 60% of the American people are against the allocation of 87 billion for this continuing conflict. Only 21% are happy with the economy and only 40% are satisfied with the state of the nation. That is based on the conservative, Gallup Poll.

Your 70% group has lost favor with this war. They are beginning to see that Bush misled them with lies to justify the war. They see the failure in Afghanistan and our weakened position in Iraq where the stage has been set for more combat revealing bungling post war activity. And with the economy on the fritz under Bush, and reconstruction under Halliburton, they question the cost and the long term plan of this administration.

As Fenix suggested earlier, your juvenile nomenclature for Democratic candidates lessens your credibility significantly, Fred.

President Bush did not say all COMBAT was over in IRAQ.

He said the major combat operation in Iraq is over and the U.S. and its allies have prevailed.
