Actually, it was the funeral homes keeping the price of coffins unnaturally high. Now there are "coffin stores" in existence where you can buy them much, much cheaper.
A lot of funeral homes blackmail people into spending more money than is necessary; making people feel that how much money they spend on a funeral is an indicator of how much they loved or valued the deceased.

Dang Stop.. that is a bargain! Did you see them? What kind of wood is used?
I have a mausoleum Crypt bought and paid for, a deluxe inside penthouse! But I haven't decided if it is going to be cremation and an urn or a coffin.. will have to have a look at them.. only one problem.. I don't think we have Costco down here..

We had both Costco and the Price Club in CA....here we have Sam's Club. Maybe you have one of those near you?
And I agree with bunni on they get you big time when you're least ready to make those decisions. It is much better to plan ahead...or have it already pre-paid. But I wasn't aware that 'speciality' shops for coffins were beginning to open up. That's great to read.

We had a "coffin shop" move in down the street a few years back. I never went in, but always joked that someday I'd buy on for the living room to replace a coffee table. That'd be a conversation starter!!!
They closed up and moved out last year. I guess they weren't making it. If you leave out the morbidity of the thing, it's really a pretty good idea.
And Bunnicula is absolutely "dead on" (heh heh) about the funeral homes ripping people off.

only 2 costco stores in Chicago offer coffins now,i bet more will be coming and you can go order online at costco.com.
i bet sam and others will follow,i dont know what wood or how fancy they are,but 800 is better than 5k.
Yes,the ones i have seen years ago was offered by the funeral home, they all have fancy names ,i should say the cheapest one was over 2k and that was in the 1970s.

Stop, I think the ideal situation would be to buy one on credit at costo, sams, etc. about right before youre thinking you might croak!

'lay away plan' would be perfect.
Make sure you max out all your credit cards and charge cards before you step into the coffin.
