I was just watching c-span and I find it very ironic that the very people discussing social security are the ones that will will receive it, unless they have worked in the private sector the for the right amount of quarters. Their plan is solvent as they can divert it into their own private account.

Congressman do not pay into social security as also the federal government employees as they have their own private account and they are the ones that are deciding the SS fate. I think they do pay into Medicare at least my husband did.

When they leave congress they are set for life. Tell me if SS is so good then why don't they have it? or are they better than us?

If I can remember when John Kerry was out campaigning he said he would like to see all Americans in the same plan as the congressmen and women. Also He said he would like the American people to have the opportunity to have the same health care plan. So what is the difference who says it. It was said.

current Members of Congress do pay into the Social Security program. Prior to 1984, Senators, Congressmen, and other government employees contributed to a separate program for civil servants, the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), and in turn did not contribute to or receive benefits from the Social Security program. However, Public Law 98-21, passed in 1983, required all Members of Congress to contribute to and be covered by Social Security, paying payroll taxes equal to 6.2% of the Social Security taxable wage base.

When my husband worked for the government he didn't pay SS and that was in the late 90's.

You do realize that this is a spoof, an Urban Legend right? And you are writing this as an explanation to your error in your first post?

To clear matters up, if a Government employee worked and contributed to CSRS before 1984, he/she did not have to participate in SS in the years after. although he/she was given the option to covert from CSRS to SS. ( few did)
