I know most of you are way too young to even know what the word means, but for the others... does your period just stop and that's it??? I had hot flashes at night for about 3 weeks last month and that's it. No period since December. Is that it?

I'm way too young. But I believe you have to go 2 years without a period before you are "officially" through the change.

Are you that old KD?
Honestly it is different with different people. Mine just quit, until, I had an MRI and it started back up again for about 3 months. I had no hot flashes. I guess I was just lucky. I have a friend who had hot flashes and were they were bad. She has sweat pouring down her face like rivers, so it effects women different. I took no medication and still don't as prempro made me really sick, like I had morning sickness. I didn't try anything else.
Good Luck....Remember you can still get pregnant.

Thanks Cherished & Libra. I'm still in my 40's but I don't think it's coming back for some reason. I sure hope not!
Did you hear that Classic? I can still have your love child.

KD
For most women, it's a gradual process. It can suddenly stop and then sometime down the road start up again. I will advise against commercial hormone replacement therapy. It's full of hormones not natural to the human body - animal hormones. Instead, look into the alternatives.

Someone said that fainting spell I had could have been menopause related (I'm in my mid-40's as well).
I had a hysterectomy in '89, so the period thing was way in the past. They did leave one ovary that looked OK. I've done the nightsweats thing, the incredibly fatigued thing, hot flashes, etc.
Although the doctors wanted me to take hormones, I never did. Didn't do the Prozac thing either. Most times I will go out of my way to be civil. I hate it when people use PMS or menopause as an excuse to be foul to those around them.

My Wife started to hit and miss at around 47 she's now into her 50's and hasn't had in over 2 years.
Still has hot flashes as bad as she ever did.
Still has Mood swings.
And if she had it her way her Sex Life would be dead.
But every now and again I call in a Clairvoyant and hold a Seance!

Hey Twig! I had a hysterectomy when I was 35, they left me with a HALF of an ovary, so I guess its still working after all these years. I refuse to take any HRT's.
I think I have hot flashes, not sure, they could be acid flashbacks, I'll need to talk to my dr about that
(I seriously did have a hysterectomy years ago though)

Classic, the only reason I like the flashes is because the 70's were IT! YES!

Well said. She Who Must Be Obeyed used to try that crap when we were first married. After years of appealing to her usually logical mind during the 3 or so good weeks she has each month, she's finally figured out that we didn't cause her cramps, bloating, backaches, neuritis, neuralgia, Dengue Fever and the Yaws, and it's better to retreat to her studio and keep us out of gunshot range during her black days.
For PMS sufferers like me and my son, menopause doesn't sound like such a bad deal.

krafty- Yes, it was necessary. I am glad I had it.
My daughter also has horrible problems, but at 26 and no children, they won't consider it. (Although they also say she won't ever get pregnant...)

Kraft, no mine was actually an 'unnecssary' hysterectomy. It was about the time when they were cracking down on drs doing these, the ones that weren't really necessary.
I found out 3 years later what the real problem was.
then more surgery
I guess I could have sued, but I didn't, and wouldn't.

That's good Twig. I know they were doing unnessessary hysterectomies as a cure for everything about 20 years ago, so I wondered.
Near, you've been through the mill with your health but still maintain a good attitude - what keeps you going? Insanity? Lily?

kraft, I think you hit it; insanity
No, for real, I know its my 2 daughters, because through all the surgeries I've had, I knew I was the only one that could care for them (I'm sure I've said their dad left years ago, and has started about 3 families since, he's been busy!) and now of course Lily
Did I say she's doing great and smiling like crazy? And it looks like she wants to crawl too! (God help us all! LOL)
And now, the sun is out for a short time, and I gotta go!
OH! Last week as a bday present from Mike, he gave me a cashiers check for cosmetic dentistry I really wanted (and needed) a veener on my front teeth. That was $$ but the best gift I could get! And the dentist is open on Saturday! I was planning on saving and doing it, and he surprised me with that! He's a good guy

LOL kraft, yep it was last week, but at my age, we tend to try and ignore it
(OH YEAH I won $500 at the casino on my bday, NO SH!T! that was the coolest thing!! LOL)
YEAH! I don't whats up with this, she is teething too! She was born Jan 31, so that makes her 2 months old. (and the dr said she was late, and 1 oz short of 9 lbs! ) I forgot how old mine were when they started crawling, I DO remember how old my oldest was when she walked, she was 11 months old, and everyone thought it was amazing.. I really don't know the 'average' age of walking.
Anyway! about your question at the top, you think you might be pregnant??
But if you do think its menopause, I guess the best person would be a dr to tell you, but then, they probably will want you on hormones, and if you want to do that, great, personally I don't, I'm sure I can get through this
