50 maggots removed from man’s ears

Doctors found about 50 fly larvae inside the ears of an 84-year-old man after he complained about his ears itching.
Dr Somsak Nonthasri, deputy director of Vachira Phuket Hospital, said Anan Temtan had scratched his ears with cotton buds so hard that the eardrums ruptured and bled.
Anan’s relatives rushed him to the hospital at noon yesterday upon seeing the blood.
Somsak said a doctor checked Anan’s ears with a scope and found the larvae inside.
“We believe flies might have gone inside his ears to lay eggs, which hatched into larvae, causing the itching,” Somsak.
Somsak said Anan would be under doctors’ observation for a while to make sure that no more fly eggs remained in his ears.
A doctor had to use tweezers to take out some of the maggots before resorting to a tool to suck the remaining maggots out.
Anan’s granddaughter, Wimolrat Temtan, 19, said Anan had recently helped clean up a market in the neighbourhood. Anan said he felt itchy inside his ears four days ago but thought it was normal.
“But the itching became severe Monday night and I tried to clean my ears with cotton buds and noticed something came out,” Anan said. “This morning, I felt more itching so I scratched with cotton buds again until my ears bled.”
Somsak said he was surprised that Anan did not come to see a doctor sooner. Most people with something inside their ear canals would not be able to stand it very long, he said.
