Example - when people get drunk, they usually get angry before they pass out. When people are in the middle of rush hour traffic, they get angry at others. People with Tourettes swear, etc., etc. How come stuff doesn't go the other way? How come nobody gets ultra happy by doing anything? Are we predispositioned to get mad at everything?

Well, Kraft, I'm the happiest drunk you ever saw but ya, a lot of people do get crabby when they're drunk and I always wondered why, too ?????

Maybe people aren't too happy lately because they're catching on to what is going on in this country.

Crowfarm, of course my examples don't include everyone, but even diseases - there's no disease that makes you feel better. Or a handicap that enhances abilities. Do you know what I'm getting at? Is happiness just being able to conquer all the things that make us feel bad?

And sure, the state of the world is a major concern for some, but not the majority it seems. Not here anyway.

And while I'm at it, I've really enjoyed your posts since you've been back.

kraft, are you smoking this afternoon?

No disease makes you feel better???????? Disease actually means 'lack of ease' so I dont see how any one of them could make somebody feel better.

I think, most things people get angry about are because they are defensive. And theres a whole slew of psychological reasons you could ponder for each individual reason for that.

But you can choose to get angry or choose not to get angry.

Kraft says,"Is happiness just being able to conquer all the things that make us feel bad?""

I think I know what you're getting at Kraft. It's kinda like we have to overcome the bad stuff to be happy when the "happy" should be the norm ????? Is that what you mean?

Exactly Crowfarm. I just wonder how we got that way or if it's the way it's suppose to be.

And yes, Double. I've smoked about 18 joints so far and feel great!

Kraft, I think you're getting into "the meaning of life" and I haven't a clue as to why we're here or what "we" are or who's on first.
I have given it a lot of thought and only came up with the reason we have religion is because nobody else knows the answers so they make up something.
I made up that we're an experiment by another life force and they're laughing their butts(if they have them) off.

Maggie, if you're bringing Einstein into I will need a joint

What are all you old timers talking about joints for? C'mon...you know you have never smoked wacky weed before.. The only joints I have are achy and don't give me a lick of pleasure...

Crow.. Einstein was one of my former husbands, he got all the credit for my good ideas!

How long is the experiment going to take crowfarm. How many more generations will there be for their experiment?

I think looking at a glass of water and how it appears to someone will tell you a lot about them and how they feel. Is it happiness or just another day.

Optimist glass half full
pessimist glass half empty

If you need a joint then I think your in trouble. If you can't get through life without the help of enhancsing drugs than I feel you have wasted your life.

Today is . . .

International Very Good Looking, Darn Smart Woman's Day

So please send this message to someone
you think fits this description. Please do not send it back to me,
as I have already received it from a
Very Good Looking, Darn Smart Woman!

And remember this motto to live by: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming...

WOW! what a ride!!

libra says, "If you can't get through life without the help of enhansing drugs than I feel you have wasted your life. "

Well, with the profits drug companies are making I would think most people have wasted their lives.

If you take an aspirin for a headache aren't you "enhansing" your life ?

Libra, there's no street drug out there that the drug companies don't make. And just so you know, I was only joking about the 18 joints... I started a thread about the illusion of happiness by adding I smoked 18 joints - har har.

believe or not,old age senility, dememtia ,alzh disease can make a person happy, they tend to forget the bad experience of the past and just bask in anything which happens today, irregardless of how irrelevant it is.
a good example-my mother !!

Speaking about happiness being an illusion..
I just saw a snippet of Hugh Hefner on the news surrounded by beautiful 20-25 year olds..grinning like a Halloween pumpkin..
My initial reaction was.. you foolish old coot at 79 years old..who do you think you're fooling..but..

then I remembered a conversation I had several years ago with a very wealthy business man acquaintance who was in his late 60's and always had a 20 year old on his arm..he would buy them Mercedes, jewels etc and then when he tired of them would find another...

I asked him one day, if he realized how this looked to people.. didn't he realize that these young women were only using him for all the goodies he doled out to them, and that he looked like a fool?

Didn't he realize that he would not find love and happiness with women young enough to be his grand daughter.

I'll never forget how he smiled and chuckled softly and said "I'm sorry that you think I am not very bright, Maggie..but perhaps it's because you are not mature enough to understand...he said he had love once or twice with his marriages when he was a younger man...and he wasn't interested in that aspect of a relationship anymore...

he said he knew perfectly well that the young ladies he dated weren't interested in him for love either, but he was perfectly happy getting out of the relationship what he wanted and as were they... I understand now what he meant.. Happiness like everything else is all relative..

DBL: Maggie, some say sickness and pain is the illusion.

Well.. that could very well be true.. we don't really know how our mind works entirely, and we could indeed be creating our own pain and illness.
I know that I can control my blood pressure and have done it time and again.. before a reading.. I can bring it down very low... and some people can go through surgery without anesthetic, and it's been said some can even control the flow of their blood..hell.. I know someone who swears he can levitate and take a flight without an airplane! LOL..

yes, maggie, very true. As a kid, I used to wonder why some kids would get sick if they went into the water swimming right after they ate and I never did. But later I figured out it was because their mothers told them that by doing so they would get sick - and my mother never said that to us. So I think I was not set up to believe it was going to happen where the other kids maybe were?

Kind of a dumb example, I know. But I always remember that.

dblflugger the reason they wanted to wait an hour before they went swimming wasn't because they would get sick, it was because they could get severe stomach cramps and drown. That was proven by the red cross, now it is anything goes.

Was it proven by the Red Cross, Libra??? I've never heard that.

As I said, it perplexed me even as a child to hear that about cramps, so of course I had to do it a few times consciously. (But all of us were pretty wild about swimming. I dont think any of us waited -- we just went running into the lake like horses out of the gate the minute we got there most days!) so I never understood that at all

But even as an adult, biologically, I dont understand how swimming or any exercise interferes with digestion?
