Tiptoe Through the Tulips in Holland
March 10, 2005
The Dutch have enjoyed a long love affair with the tulip. The native passion, known as "Tulipmania," climaxed in 1636 when an obsession with owning a single tulip bulb as a status symbol sent people into an insane buying frenzy---with prices as high as $2000 each. Today, Holland is the number one producer and exporter of tulips, and every spring the landscape to the west of Amsterdam turns into a kaleidoscope of color as acres upon acres of tulips attract admirers from far and wide. Holland's number one tulip attraction is Keukenhof, when 80-acre Keukenhof, in Lisse, displays more than 7 million blazing tulips and other flowers. This annual event, which takes place March 24-May 20, attracts close to 800,000 visitors, so if you plan on seeing the tulips, act now (remember, tulips will likely peak between mid-April and mid-May). While in Lisse, pay a visit to the Black Tulip Museum, which covers the history and growing of this desirable bulb. Fodors.com has the skinny on other tulip activities, places to go, where to eat and sleep in Amsterdam. ---Shirley Agudo

Any place that can breed a black tulip (ok - it's not really black and it's not really from Holland but stil...) is OK with me.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Hey classic guess what I saw on my travels today? The Who in quadrophenia (or maybe it was Tommy?on reel to reel. Some guy's now deceased dad had an antique shop, and he is now selling out everything so I went to have a look. He also had a signed letter from Olie North to somebody. Swore up and down it was legit and I didnt doubt it as they've been in business for years. He offered me a so-so pretty decent dollar for it, but I didnt buy it. (Just didnt feel like it.)
