Finally!!!
Kihei, my town (pronounced Kee-hay for those that have wondered) is finally getting a high school. Right now over 800 students have to get on a bus before dawn to go to a high school either on the other side of the island or upcountry (on the slopes of Haleakala, the volcano). So after years of nagging and pleading, a teacher from my kids' elementary school finally took matters into his own hands and got the ball rolling, forming a committee for a charter public high school and making it impossible for the powers that be to ignore the growing situation any longer. They found a proposed site, less than 1/2 mile from my house, and the school should be completed by 2002, opening with an estimated 1000 students...and just in time for my kids to attend!

Interesting new program the school is going to have: a mentor program. 1 mentor per every 25 students will be with them throughout their high school career. To quote the teacher who started the new school project: "A good mentor program could have possibly prevented such tragedies as Columbine." Hmmm

I've been mentally pronouncing it "Kigh High". Just so you know. Whoops!

lol james

good for you bunnicula!

I've wondered how everyone pronounced it, lol

Reading further into the high school article, it says that 'smart boards' that transfer teaching notes directly into student computers will replace the classroom white boards of today. Two-way interactive distance learning will link students at home with the classroom, and courses could even be taught in the evening using computer links. Very interesting. The school where my kids go now already uses computers to replace attendance logues and lunch money... every teacher has a laptop and a sheet of names that have a barcode next to them... they scan the barcode and the office instantly knows the student is present...same with the lunches... the cafeteria dude scans a bar code when students come in for lunch and it debits the account they have pre-paid. No bullies stealing lunch money here, lol

We're also getting a new high school with a completion date of Sept 2003. My son is only in the 3rd grade, so it will be three years young when he finally gets there. Right now, our one high school has a student population of 2,700, but was only built to accomodate 2,000, so this new school is well overdue. It's also just one mile from my house instead of the 6+ that the old one is. I'm happy there won't be any bus rides!!

The only downside is this school is being built on property that is currently a dairy and part of the dairy operation supposedly will remain there. Not only will the smell and flies be a challenge, but they've already nicknamed it Cow Pie High!

That's great Kcat. I'm really surprised that they haven't done it already with that many students.

You are going to be a great mentor. Living 1/2 mile away, your house will also be full of kids every day. Get ready for the time of your life!

Kcat,

I predict sometime in the future when your boys and friends get older at least one of them is going to fall IN LUVVVVVVVV! and become broken hearted. You will pick up the pieces. You will laugh and want to gag but you will control the feeling and help put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Nothing worse than a teenager in LUVVVVVVVVVVV!

Now don't you dismiss the mentoring idea. You are a natural at it and there are too many kids out there with no one who cares. You know the old saying "It takes a village to raise a child."

calamity, perhaps one day. Full plate right now. I've also often thought about when the kids get older pondering the possibility of taking in a foster child... but again, that's wayyyyyy down the road.

My 9 year old is already pining because the girl of his dreams, Kiana, is in a different class this year. They see each other on the field at recess, but not all day like before. She's a doll too...creamy mocha skin and a smile that lights up a crowd... looks like that gal who just became Miss USA or Miss America, one of those pageants, but that's another thread re-visited, lol
