Now dean's calling the GOP 'the white Christian party'.....
---

But Dean's style and rhetoric have sparked increasing criticism from inside the Democratic Party in recent weeks -- and gleeful Republicans say they couldn't be happier.

"Where do I sign up on a committee to keep Howard Dean?" crowed GOP operative Jon Fleischmann, publisher of the FlashReport, a daily roundup of California political news and commentary.

"He's the best thing to happen to the GOP in ages."

"I'm thrilled he's the DNC chair," says Tom Del Becarro, chairman of the Contra Costa County Republican Party.

"Howard Dean is scaring away the middle. People don't like angry people. They like hopeful people.''

But Simi Valley Councilman Glenn Becerra, a staffer with former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson and a Bush appointee to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, said Tuesday he was far from amused by Dean's suggestion that Republicans constitute "a white Christian party," and called the Democratic Party chairman "an embarrassment."

"I'm living proof that the (GOP) isn't what Howard Dean is trying to describe,'' Becerra said during a telephone interview. "It's a sad day when Democrats don't have any ideas to put forward, and they have to resort to race politics. President Bush didn't get 40 percent of the Hispanic vote (in 2004) because we're a monolithic, white Christian party."

Dean, speaking in a roundtable discussion Monday, downplayed the controversy over his rhetoric.
"This is one of those flaps that comes up once in awhile when I get tough," Dean said. "We have to be rough on the Republicans. Republicans don't represent ordinary Americans and they don't have any understanding of what it is to go out and try and make ends meet."

Howard Dean's remark

"You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room?," Dean asked to laughter. "Only if they had the hotel staff in here."

Newsmax:
Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman blasted newly elected DNC chief Howard Dean on Tuesday for telling what he said was a "racist" joke to the Congressional Black Caucus.[...]
The flap over Dean's "hotel staff" remark isn't the first time critics say he has crossed the line on race.

During the primary campaign last year, the former Vermont governor repeatedly told audiences that he wanted to be the candidate of "white folks in the South who drive pick-up trucks with Confederate flag decals."

Crow - Perhaps you have not noticed this but no one ever pays attention to Quartermass. the only perso giving him any credence is you.

Linda - Whatever they gave Dean during the DNC campaign that made him well spoken, logical, and cured him of his political turrets need to be returned to his daily routine. He was smart and made sense during that time and now back out in left field. Disappointing.

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

[b]Media Mum on Dean's 'KKK' Fund Raise[b]

There's little doubt that if Howard Dean were a Republican, he'd be announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race this week, as details from a recent Dean rally - so ripe with racism it would make a Ku Klux Klansman blush - have begun seeping into print.

Since Dean is a Democrat, however, at least one prominent media columnist is saying it's no big deal that the entertainment for the ex-Vermont governor's Dec. 8 event included "N"-word jokes, imitations of Condoleezza Rice in an Amos 'n Andy accent and references to the president of the United States as a "piece of living, breathing s--t."

Credit for breaking the media embargo on Howard Dean's KKK-style Manhattan fund raiser goes to the New York Post's Deborah Orin, who first noted the "N"-word references last week, then fleshed out the details in a Post op-ed piece yesterday. [Why an op-ed, when this story belongs on the front page? But that's another matter.]

The details of what passed for entertainment at the Dean rally are as ugly as they come. Here are a few of the lowlights, according to Orin:

"Comedian David Cross used the N-word for blacks in a disjointed 'joke' apparently based on the premise that it's fine for a pro-Dean comic to use racial epithets as long as the goal is to claim Republicans are racists."

"Sandra Bernhard insulted Condoleezza Rice in racial terms with a 'Yes Massa' accent at another Dean fundraiser the same night."

"Dean rival Joe Lieberman got ridiculed for being unable to campaign on Jewish holidays because he's Orthodox."

"[Vice President Dick] Cheney's daughter Mary, who is gay, was called 'a big lezzie.'"
"Comic Judy Gold dissed President Bush as 'this piece of living, breathing s---' and Janeane Garofalo ridiculed the Medicare prescription-drug bill that Bush had just signed as the 'you can go f--- yourself, Grandma' bill."

As the New York-style Klan rally continued, the Democratic front-runner was said to be "fuming" backstage.
But Dean did nothing to interrupt the proceedings, and certainly hasn't returned any of the campaign cash he collected from the folks who found the anti-black humor so amusing.

Neither has Dean issued a public apology, or pledged that those "comedians" who made racially offensive statements will be barred from all future Dean events.

When asked about the outrageous comments delivered at an event held in his name, the Vermont Democrat said only that some of the language was "wrong," then added meekly, "I don't have much tolerance for ethnic humor."

So, why hasn't the press jumped ugly with Dean? Maybe it's because they don't find the racist rants delivered in his honor any more offensive than he does.

No people of color in Dean's cabinet-because so few in VT

Q: How you can explain not one black or brown working for your administration as governor?

DEAN: We do have African-American & Latino workers in state government.

SHARPTON: I said under your administration. Do you have a senior member of your cabinet that was black or brown?

DEAN: We had a senior member of my staff on my 5th floor.

SHARPTON: No, your cabinet.

DEAN: No, we did not. [But the cabinet has only] six members.

SHARPTON: Then you need to let me talk to you about race in this country.

DEAN: If the percentage of African-Americans in your state was any indication of what your views on race were, then Trent Lott would be Martin Luther King.

SHARPTON: But I don't think that that answers the question. If you want to lecture people on race, you ought to have the background and track record in order to do that. Governors import talent. Governors reach all over the country to make sure they have diversity

fenix - As we're seeing some on the dem site of the ticket are speaking out about how dean's racist statements don't reflect their views.

But, imo, not enough. The democratic party put dean in the position he's in and if they choose to they could remove him. I see this as 'allowing' this behavior to continue....while giving lip service to it being wrong.

He's a racist, imo, through and though and is one of many who always keep putting/using that 'racial' wedge for political gain. Imo, there's no reason to go there at all.

And lately I've seen dean on tape walking towards the camera. He walks like he's got a pant load of xxxx. His gait matches his mouth.
