We're having an ADDITIONAL TAX of $1.50 PACK added onto cigarettes next week here in Ohio.
I feel it is so unfair to single out a 'group' of people to pay a tax ... some people refer to it as 'sin tax' but heck, God loves sinners, too.

Louisiana has done the same thing, I believe, RichieRich..although I am not or never have been a smoker, I too feel this is unfairly singling out one group of people.
How about increasing the tax on booze, or gambling, or any other so called sin...hell gluttony is considered one of the seven deadly sins.. so why not tax fat people per every pound over the weight guide line...with the obesity problem our country has, we could balance the budget with this tax alone...and don't stop there, how about Sloth.. another sin..let's tax all the lazy slobs out there for every hour they sit on their fat asses doing nothing...the list could go on and on...

I agree. They were to raise the tax on beer and alcohol, but decided it wasn't wise to pizz off the alcoholics in Ohio. Better to have a bunch of drunks pay too little and smokers pay too much. Given the choice, I'd rather be on the road with a smoker than a drinker. But, oh, let's not make the breweries angry or the bar owner's angry.
The state of Ohio should, instead of losing millions of dollars in ill-fated schemes, consider other ways to raise money.
Don't worry, Marcia, next November we can rid ourselves of Taft AND kick Blackwell to the curb.

The theory is to defray medical expenses by taxing the hell out of the people doing the most damage to their health. Alcohol can be beneficial to health and therefore is not the same win-win proposition for politicians.

I don't know about that. If you take cigarettes away from smokers, it could get quite ugly for everyone around them.
As they say, "Complaining about my smoking could be hazardous to your health".
BTW, I am a smoker.....until I'm a Grandma...no sense in harming my grandchild since I'm waiting so damn long for one! (I can always get another husband....lol!)

Alcohol is beneficial??? Uh, liver disease. Tell that also to the thousands that lose their lives to drunk drivers each year. I don't think it was beneficial to their lives. Or, how about industrial accidents caused by drinking on the job? Oh, there are more.

The French have a much lower heart attack rate than most as daily alcohol lowers colesterol and makes arteries more slippery. The darker wines are full of anti-oxidants and free radical scavengers which inhibit cancers.
Tell us now how morphine is bad because junkies like to shoot up. Why is it always about the "thing" rather than the "person"?

well, i became a grandma almost two years ago ... i kept my cigs WAY away from the darling while he was tiny, and my husband (non-smoker) invested then in a lot of ventilation so i can still have my need IN my house ....
I am just ticked as all-get-out that this is happening to those of us that continue to need or want to smoke ...
(I did have a mother in law who was a head nurse at the most major hospital here in the 80s and 90s, and at the age of 60 decided to try to quit smoking after having smoked all her life ... honest to God, the day she quit, and there on, her demeanor/temperment/stress/tension/able to deal with MINOR conflicts etc. escalated like crazy and she died ... {she USED to be the most easy laid back person to talk to; no more) no one can convince me that her stopping smoking did not contribute to her life's end ...) she was just fine till she quit smokin' .... MMTHO ... (my more than humble opinion)

That's wine and in moderation. What about Beer? Hard liquor? Are you saying they are beneficial as well? The problem with alcohol is (like cigarettes), it's difficult for most people to have just one. At least when smokers get behind the wheel of a car they aren't going to kill someone because they can't see straight.

No it's not.
The point is there is nothing good about cigarettes except to light your fireworks so it's not the same as alcohol, chocolate pudding, nutrasweet, or anything else.

Well all of you can still get your nicotine fix by switching to chewing tobacco! Red Man, Beechnut or try a pinch of Skoal.
Then you can save on the price of matches and lighters.

Rich - you need a full time border dweller than can get them for you from Mexico. I paid less that $15 a carton last time I was down there. Problem is you can only bring back two cartons at a time so you need to find a non smoker that does not go to feed their own fix. That or contact one of the Mexican online pharmacies

My son was checking out cigarettes on the internet - from different countries who will ship these to America. And yes, some well known brands can be purchased for as little as $14.00 a carton.
I just asked him to really think about how comfortable he felt giving his credit card number to a person in another country....not knowing who he'd be dealing with and realizing the fact that some don't give THEIR "business" address...it's all handled online.
Risky, imo.

I think that jobs will be lost. I smoke and I am working on quitting, but I am respectful of those who don't. I don't smoke in restaurants and I don't smoke around those who don't. The tobacco industry employs a lot of people and unless jobs are available for the people who will lose their's they need to leave it alone and find their money elsewhere. I could walk across the street tomorrow and get hit by a bus. Are we going to tax the public transportation industry more because of that? I could get hit by lightening, or shot during a crime. Anything can happen. Blaming the high cost of healthcare on smokers is just ridiculous. What about chemical waste seeping into the ground water and causing rare cancers in people (happening in Avon Lake, OH now)? I don't see those industries being taxed more nor do I see them being fined. They're big campaign contributors.
I can tell you this, the money is certainly not going to go to the schools. Maybe Taft is looking for a way to compensate for the millions lost in the BWC scandal. The citizens of Ohio will be paying that one back. This state is a disgrace and I'm not happy about having to live here. We are considering a move in a couple of years if things don't change once we have the money saved. The "good old boys" in southern Ohio can keep this state and shove is where the sun refuses to shine. JMO.

cheryl - I have absolutely NO clue as to why you addressed your post to me. I said NOTHING about any of the things you mentioned.
My posts spoke about giving a CC to some unknown source...and to some vendors saying they feel this will cause jobs losses. Nothing more....nothing less.

They should also place high taxes on video games which turn children into fat, lazy, morons.
They should also place a high tax on fast food restaurants because they turn people into fat slobs.
They should place high taxes on organized sports for children because of the injuries sustained while playing.
ATV's should have a high tax for the number of people killed and injured on them.
Cars should REALLY get taxed because of traffic deaths and injuries.
Doctors should be taxed because of all the wrong diagnosis that injured or killed people.
Lakes and rivers should be taxed because of all the people who drown in them.
Cats should be taxed because of tripping and falling over them.
Hot air balloons should be taxed because if you're looking at them you could walk into a tree and hurt yourself.
Get my point?

I used to buy over the phone and charge to my cc. Now, I think it's illegal to charge them, so it's an automatic deduction from my checking. The only problem is the first shipment has to be signed for and I'm at work. Tomorrow is the third delivery attempt...Hopefully when UPS tries to deliver to my friend's, they'll let her drive to my house and accept mine. (They HAVE to deliver to my house and get a signature for the first. I stopped the truck at my workplace on Friday and he HAS to deliver to my house.) What a PITA!
Thanks maggie...
