I found this funny, particularly because the Republicans are in an uproar about it. They have nothing else to cover up the Rove scandal. LOL!!!!

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton Attacks Bush, Comparing Him to Alfred E. Newman
The Associated Press

Jul. 11, 2005 - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton went on the attack against President Bush in a speech Sunday, accusing him of damaging the economy by overspending while giving tax cuts to the rich.

The Democrat from New York also accused Bush of depriving U.S. soldiers of equipment needed to fight the war in Iraq and cutting funding for scientific research.

"I sometimes feel that Alfred E. Newman is in charge in Washington," Clinton said referring to the freckle-faced Mad magazine character. She drew a laugh from crowd when she described Bush's attitude toward tough issues with Newman's catchphrase: "What, me worry?"

Clinton, who was speaking during the inaugural Aspen Ideas Festival, organized by the Aspen Institute nonpartisan think tank, didn't mention the presidential election in 2008.

She said the United States should remain in Iraq until peace can be maintained by the Iraqi people, saying the mission was part of the "long struggle against terrorism" by the U.S.

"The threat of terrorism is as close as our daily commute," said Clinton, adding that people around the world admired the "famous resilience" of the British in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks.

When it came to the economy, Clinton accused the Bush administration of focusing on helping the wealthy while hurting the middle class, which she said has been key to Americans' success and stability.

She said the middle class is now being threatened by an ailing economy caused by the growing national debt, growing health care costs, the loss of pensions and the loss of manufacturing diversity. Clinton also said the U.S. needs to focus on exploring alternative energy sources to become less reliant on oil.

What a hoot, this comes from the expert on helping the middle class and the education system.
In 1983, Gov. Clinton with the backing of his wife Hillary who was the chairman of state Education Standards Committee, asked the Arkansas legislature for and recieved a 33 percent raise in sales tax. He said "to put it bluntly and get right to the point, we've got to raise taxes to make Arkansas competitive with the nation and the world economiclly". The tax raise of 33 percent went to the fund the K-12 public education fund. Hilary's panel approved the recommendations. The Clinton plan raised the sales tax, spent more on schools, and enacted Hillary's recommendations. Still, at present, the poorest and most disadvantaged region in Arkansas has been left holding the bag. In the ten-county Delta region of southeast Arkansas, 94 percent of K-12 districts have at least one "academically troubled" school under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Every school in 17 of these districts is failing under the act's accountability provisions; five have 100 percent college remediation rates, according to the state Department of Education's school information site.
At that time, Arkansas ranked 49th in the nation in per capita income. Last figures available in 2003 show that 20 years after Bill and Hillary's great plans, sales tax increase, and recommendations, Arkansas still ranks 49th.

Edited for spelling.

Etexbill, the "no Child left behind fiasco" has a lot to be desired when it comes to rating schools . A teacher I know explained it and i can't remember all the details but basically she(and I've heard this from other sources) says that their ratings scale is very skewed, showing that even though some schools have made great progress they show "badly" on the the NCLB scale. It's just not as simple as it sounds.

And it IS 22 years AFTER the Clintons now. Nobody's been running the state since then ?

"And it IS 22 years AFTER the Clintons now. Nobody's been running the state since then ?"

Yep, two. And it has only been 13 years since the Clintons left office. He was governor until 1992. A Democrat who resigned after being implicated in the Whitewater scandal and the present governor, who took office when the resignation took place, a Republican Governor Huckabee, who is finally headed in the right direction:

"Arkansas' ACTAAP system is widely hailed as one of the nation's best school accountability programs. Huckabee has pushed through reforms in Arkansas that have significantly expanded the availability of college scholarships, increased the number of charter schools and established new approaches to workforce education. His Smart Start initiative placed a heavy emphasis on reading and mathematics for students from kindergarten through the fourth grade. He then created Smart Step, a similar emphasis for students from the fifth through the eighth grades. Student scores on standardized tests have risen steadily since the creation of Smart Start and Smart Step. Huckabee also has received nationwide publicity for his efforts to increase administrative efficiency in the state while ensuring the state complies with the ruling of the Arkansas Supreme Court in the Lake View case."

Huckabee became governor in July 1996 when his predecessor resigned.

Skewed or not, that is the way schools over the country are rated.

The ONLY important thing she said in that article was something very few lefties here want to hear.

She said the United States should remain in Iraq until peace can be maintained by the Iraqi people, saying the mission was part of the "long struggle against terrorism" by the U.S.

EXACTLY what the Bush administration has been saying and doing.

I think the economy of the United States and exploring energy sources are more important. Anyone who doesn't think so is un-American.

Good! I'm glad to hear her talking about the injustices she sees going on.

As for pulling out of Iraq, no good politician is going to say that, even though that's what they might be thinking. It's a disaster over there and pulling out would only harm Bush's image. He opened up a can of worms when he invaded and now that he's President for the next 3+ years, everyone's watching him to see how he's going to handle this. He painted himself into a corner. His ONLY option is to stay until his Presidency is over.

You two sure don't keep current on the news, do you?

The economy is doing just fine. Good jobs report for the month of June...and unemployment went down again ...now at 5.0. Which was considered 'normal' employment for years and years.

PLUS on top of that a projection was made in the past couple of days that our deficit will be approx. $90 billion dollars LESS than previously projected.

BOTH of those are GOOD economic news.
------------

And on the Iraq war...you'd be wrong too, KD. There's now discussion about pulling troops out of Iraq, in areas where they've remained pretty peaceful. Talks are now going on between the Iraq government and the US.

Linda, your economy affects many countries so I'm glad to hear it's improving!

And sure, there will be troops pulling out here and there but I doubt the U.S. will leave Iraq while Bush is in power.

I talked to a Michigan teacher of 25 years over the 4th weekend. He told me one big reason some schools have better test scores is because a lot more kids are dropping out and quiting school. So more kids drop out (usually the hard to reach poor preforming kids) the school's test scores go up and more kids are on the streets doomed to a life of poverty and often crime.

You want to check it out? Since this White House has proved it lies. Just talk to several teachers that work in the field to find out the real story about the no child left behind program.

About Bush acting like the "what me worry" guy Alfred E Newman. All I can say is, if you look like a duck, act like a duck, walk like a duck and quack like a duck then you must be a duck.

This about sums it up:

"Finally, a new bumper sticker for BOTH political parties.

This hottest selling political bumper sticker comes from New York State:

"RUN HILARY RUN'

Democrats put it on the rear bumper.

Republicans put it on the front bumper."

Off topic.. Rusty, I have been meaning to tell you how sorry I was to hear that your girlfriend is battling cancer. I don't recall if you said that she is in remission or is now cancer free? All my best wishes to you both and hopes for a full recovery. How fortunate for her to have someone like you to help her through such terrible times. Maggie

Thank you, Bill. I would seriously love to move out of here.. unfortunately, with the cost of real estate these days..it looks like I'm stuck here in the arm pits of the south.

The job in Mexico is still in the offering..but I hate to move so far from family and friends..

Sooo.. I guess I'll continue to play duck and hide and run... Maggie

Hillary should talk. Has anyone noticed her similarity in appearance to :"Howdy Doody" the old kids cartoon character?
