I got one! basic Singer.

Wow, evetything kinda came back, from threading the machine (and bobbin!) to sewing that straight line! LOL!! I even was doing the 'fancy' zig zag stitch!!! I love it! But need some practice before I start making all of Mikes dress shirts for work! LOL!!

Seriously, I do love it!

That's GREAT, NearTheSea - I believe it will bring you tons of enjoyment. After you get a little practice under your belt....you may want to consider purchasing a surger. That way you can professionally finish off all the edges of the fabric so it won feel uncomfortable nor look so unraveled.

I never learned to sew, Near.. I've always admired those who can.. I don't have the patience and I can't sit still long enough to do anything crafty.. Good luck! Maggie

Linda, yeah was looking at surgersalso. But I need to get the hang of this basic first. I've been using up all the scrap fabric I have practicing! It really is enjoyable! I think it will be my new obession now (besides Dr House lol )

LOL Ron! I don't know how many sewers (ok you guys! I mean people that sew ) there are , but I just really wanted to try it again, and am very happy with the machine

Maggie, its not hard, hey if *I* can do it (I'm a clutz at crafts ) you can too!

Oh btw, it is a used one, and I got them down to $25! Super deal for me!

Well, you have a nice modern sewing machine -- unlike this one that your great, great grandmother used! You should be able to sew anything!

I learned on one of those "pedal" machines that didn't require electricity. (I'm not THAT old, that's what my mom had.)

Sometimes places like Joann Fabrics or the Singer stores have classes for "starters".

I like to sew. I just hate pinning down patterns and cutting them out.

twig, I inherited my mom's pedal sewing machine since I was the only child, and my oldest daughter now has it in her house with other antiques. Hold on to them things, they are worth a bunch now.

Near, my wife has made my shirts for years. I wear them every day. She has cut my hair once a week, for the past 30 years.

Fred, your wife must be a fantastic sewer, and thats great, I can only wish I will be

To tell you the truth, and since he doesn't read here

Mike buys his shirts, then has them tailored at the cleaners he uses.

He is also worse to go shopping with, than any friend I go shopping with!! He takes way too much time, you girls out there would be surprised at how he shops! LOL! I myself HATE shopping for clothes, so I wear Levis and t shirts most of the time, I know my size, and can just grab the pair and thats my shopping
But I do have one or 2 dresses in CASE I have to wear a dress

Fred, you are a lucky man! And she cuts your hair? I wouldn't even dream of cutting Mikes! He goes to Gene Juarez Salons!!!
Ok, hopefully he will NEVER read this LOL!!

Nearthesea: The Singer is electric, right? But not computerized? All I need is a basic electric machine that can do straight stitch and zigzag. Used to have a machine always, until about 5 years ago. Learned on a treadle machine my mother had, sewed all my clothes in high school and college, even poodle-cloth jackets. Frighteningly ambitious for a girl.

Good for you, Near! I'm sure you'll do just fine. I have a Brother machine that does all the fancy stitches. I've used it twice in the last four years. I never was a sewer. My mother used to sew all my skating outfits for competitions and my grandmother used to re-upholster all the furniture. It just never rubbed off.

Roadsmith, I've heard about computerized sewing machines. Does a person even need to be there? Pretty soon computers will take over the world and we'll lose our limbs from lack of use. Maybe even return to the sea. You wait.

I've had two Singer machines. The first one was a heavy duty machine that would only sew backwards and forward. I replaced that one with a computerized machine with hundreds of stitches that I never used. As Roadsmith suggested you only need straight stitch and zigzag for knits and buttonholes etc.

Roadsmith, yes its electric. I knew someone like you in H.S. she would sew everything! And the clothes looked as good as, if not better, than store bought!

Helen, I tried your link, and it wanted my cookies, and I hate giving cookies Anyway, I think you were linking to the treadle that some people are talking about here. I believe my grandmother had one, my mother had a singer, electric, but she bought it new in the late 40's and she used that machine on a lot of our clothes, when we were little, she could whip out curtains in an hour, and made so many things!

Cheryl, I've seen the Brother, almost got one

kraft, I wonder that too! I believe some prices go as high as $2k on the computerized ones, for that, I would set it make me a pair of pants, and hit enter, and leave.. LOL!!

Helen, if your not using it, send it to me

I'm kidding, this is fine, I want to make some pillow covers, and other things on the bedroom I'm finally doing, got ALL the crap out of there, and bought new bedroom furniture, in the garage now, until I paint and get (or make ) curtains, comforter etc.

The machine I got for $25 is a Singer 6110. It came with all the manuals, and the RECIEPT was tucked in there. The people bought it new in 1983 for 299. plus tax. Now in 83 I'm sure that was a lot for a machine, I think.

It does the straight line, and there is about 3 other zig zags you can turn it to, to sew. Everything works. Extras, like different pressor feet, and needles. Terrific deal I think!
