I changed my mind. I think fat people are real nice, and we should all get out of their way.

Look at the prices of fattening food to healthy food and you will see one reason why.
The other is most people lead a sedentary life style and I know from experience that I have to keep moving or I am one of "those" people.
Another stigma is that in the old days, heft was associated with wealth. I also think they did discover gene association?
Regardless, most of us eat too much and excersise to little.
and you wonder why people want national health care? So they can keep on eating.
You'd pay even more if that ever got through.

Prof, I asked a similar question before but was flamed over it. The ONLY thing in life a person can control is what they put in their mouths - food, booze, smokes, drugs, etc. Does that mean most people are out of control? I really believe that people don't care if they get cancer or heart disease, etc. They don't care if they end up in the hospital. They don't care if it escalates the cost of health care. It's easier to "pay later" for what we consume than to implement some self-control along the way - the path of least resistance always wins.

LoL Ron!
You make a good point though. Socialized health care is meant for the people who can least afford it, not for people who chose to live a life of self-abuse then turn themselves over to the health care system to fix when they get heart disease, etc.

I agree 100% with you, prof. I've been about 20 pounds overweight for years and know FULL WELL that it's because of what I eat plus my sedentary lifestyle. I joined Curves a year ago and am doing better--but still don't enjoy exercise.
There are restaurants I won't eat at--like HomeTown Buffet and others--because, going in, all I could see are the Large People like the ones you describe here. Eating large platefuls of food, going back 5 - 8 times for more, and it's always the bready, fried junk, with syrup over everything. THEN heaping the desserts on another plate. Everywhere in those restaurants are the huge people. And I'm fully aware that my health insurance will continue to rise because THEIR PREVENTABLE health problems are costing all of us money.
It's a national disgrace--especially when there are so many on this planet without food to eat. What pigs we all are.

I suggest some type of 2-way switch and hose system that's implanted in your chest. Switch the system to ON if you want to consume the food, or in the OFF position where your chewed food just comes out the tube on your chest and is collected in an industrial strength hefty bag you carry with you, keeping you fit as well.
posted on July 23, 2005 04:08:25 PMwhy should a 300 pound person get to fly for the same price as a 150 pounder? It doesn't make any sense.
Some airlines do charge more for people that can not fit into one seat.
Where do you draw the line, 150lbs, 200lbs, 300lbs? Or are you suggesting everybody pays by the pound kinda like you do at the butcher?
Why should a kid have to pay the same price as an adult on a plane?
Absolute faith has been shown, consistently, to breed intolerance. And intolerance, history teaches us, again and again, begets violence.

You know Profe, I was thinking the same thing the other day over at the Walmart. It struck me that so many riders were being used..and talk about a menace..one elderly lady in particular would drive and back up without the least bit of consideration for those around her..but I digress..
Louisiana and Mississippi have to be two of the fattest states in the nation..I remember when I was in school.. there would be one or two fat kids in the school...now it seems one out of 5 kids are obese. You have to wonder if there isn't something in the food like growth hormones or something..
But when I was a kid, most mothers stayed home, didn't go out of the home to work and cooked meals from scratch... it seems since moms have had to work that the fast foods replaced the home cooked meals and that's when everybody ballooned. Along with the latchkey syndrome, the kids were told to stay in the house while moms were at work.. instead of going out to play until Dinner time.. So now we have a generation of fast food fed sedentary obese kids..
And what about the "eat yourself into morbid obesity then get surgery to cut half your intestines and stomach out craze"...got to wonder how many health problems will result in the following years with complications from that.
And don't get me started on really obese folks that I'm stuck sitting beside on a plane...that's just plain uncomfortable.. I had a aisle seat on one flight and the man in the middle seat was huge.. and he hung over my side and the side of the passenger by the window.. I sat with my right arm practically hanging over the arm rest on the aisle the entire trip...ug.
Now, I am not unsympathetic to those who have health issues that result in obesity, but the percentage is low compared to those who's health style has created the problem.

Profe, you and I must shop at the same places... I just made a similar comment in the "sexual discrimination" thread. I should have read this one first.

Amen, I just got in from grocery shopping and saw a lady whose upper arms were as large as my waist. I'm serious. I'll bet she weighed 300+ lbs. She was accompanied by her family who together would require extra fuel for a plane to take off. If you want to see some pitiful sights, shop in Houston, "the fattest city in the nation" according to statistics.
It's the lack of exercise and healthy food. Everyone eats out these days and fast food is deadly. Take a look at an elementary school class these days and be shocked. In 30-40 years our health care problem will be more than we can handle.

It's one way to avoid the coming draft.
Let's see you should control your weight better than other people control their sexual orientation. We condone lifestyles that contribute to the rise of HIV and the associated health cost, but condemn another lifestyle because of alleged unsubstantiated nebulous health care costs. And all because you find certain body types not to be eye candy.
The previous posters are shallow and hypocritical.
I've been fat all my life, it is a body type and I don't fight it. I just make sure I fit in the same clothes size so as to only have one wardrobe and be easy to buy for. If you don't like it, you can kiss my grits and high-tail it back to the #*!@ farm. And quit patronizing Wal-Mart, damn it!

Profe! ROFL!!! ... why should a 300 pound person get to fly for the same price as a 150 pounder?
You make people sound like hamburgers or something!!! :0)
Maggie, I was thinking the same thing myself walking around the grocery store. Just happened to notice a lot of fat people around, and kids too! But they are commenting on it on the news almost nightly or weekly. We are becoming a nation of fat people more and more...
Then we were watching some show, and my hubby scoffed at a depiction of a portion of something,...I forget what it was, but I said to him that is how wealthier classier people eat. They dont go in for the gluttoney. They are taught about smaller portion sizes from early on.

I walk/ride bike everyday. I am not a fan of exercise.... All I have to do is to look at people who have so many health problems as a result of being overweight. That keeps me going.
When I moved to the east, my lifestyle changed dramatically. I worked long hours, ate out 2x a day. Soon I had no energy and just wanted to sleep the minute I came home.
Finally this spring I started walking everyday. Soon my energy levels were up, I was sleeping better and my jeans were falling down.
Now that it is hot and humid I changed to walking on the treadmill for an hour or riding my stationary bike.
My mom has been tiny all her life. No serious health problems till recently. My brother works out at the gym six days a week. The only family member with a problem is my father. He could stand to lose 50 pounds. Mom says he has started to walk. That is encouraging to hear.
A weeks ago I attended my brother's company picnic. The first thing I notice that almost every child in attendence was overweight. It was shocking really. It wasn't baby fat either.
One of my friends has a overweight teenage daughter. He and his wife took her to a doctor who put her on a strict diet and exercise program. She has lost 25 pounds and looks great. Now she is careful about her food choices. She is enjoying the attention she is getting from the boys. She really is a knock out. I hope she keeps the good habits up.

Sorry, Parklane. Not according to the medical profession. If you don't fight it, you won't lose. And your life expectancy is a lot lower.
It can be done. I have a friend who lost 80 pounds (with medical help).

Yes, there are fat people all over. I see them everyday too.
What you got is the food. I am not going to blame fast food. I blame all the carbohydrates (no I don't do Atkins anymore) that are so CHEAP to buy. A society, who buys mac and cheese (not referring to you kraftdinner )
potatos, pasta, loads of hamburger (that is not a carb, but it is one of the cheaper meats)
The school, the last my kids went (well that was a while ago) the school lunches was loaded with carbs and fat. They never bought lunch, they wanted me to make it (but for me it was easier giving them $1.50 everyday) they bought for awhile and didn't like it.
Sh_t the grandbaby is crying....... why do I volunteer to babysit???

You're right near, school lunches are atrocious. Too many choices offered to kids who haven't got sense enough to choose. Too much sugar, too much starch...My kids have always taken lunch to school. As my school has changed over the years, we've gotten an influx of kids from the city, and they're far fatter than the local ranch kids, who haven't got time to sit in front of video games after school and on weekends. Out of my class of 31 last year, I'd say about half were significantly overweight.

prof, at the "First Monday" flea market in Canton, Texas, the world's largest flea market, I see healthy 20 something year olds using the scooters for disabled people. They drive to where they want to look at something, hop off and back on the scooter and away they go.
That's one of the reasons the younger generation is so overweight. It's called LAZY.

some folks are on medication which screw up their metabolism, anti depressant is one.
Prozac is an old one,you can easily gain 50 lbs and more being on Prozac.
Ever see how happy some folks are at chinese all you can eat buffet, they park their cars and walk to the door, their facial expression is like they have finally arrived at Mecca.
Some of you mentioned Walmart, yeah, these are the same folks who eat twinkie and soda and cheese curls etc, someone once pointed out-rich folks go sking at CO,snorkeling at Cancun in summer, but what do poor folks do??
Instead of shopping at walmart,go to Neiman Marcus the floor where the designer boutiques are and see how slim the women are.

And fat people pass it on to their children, a form of child abuse, yes, abuse. I have seen parents with grossly overweight kids and wonder how they can be so cruel. Yes, a small, small, group of people have a disease or a cure that produces weight gain, most weight gain is from sitting on your ass watching TV .
The quickest way to lose weight is turn off the TV, throw out video games, which are NOT a NEED, they are a stupidity, and people who allow their children to have them should also be charged with child abuse....they make kids stupid and fat.
Kids never learn what work is , physical, sweaty, hard labor.
They should be required to spend one year on a working farm or ranch, not the computerized kind the old-fashioned kind where you have to (gasp! ) WALK TO THE BARN, not ride on a three wheeler.
I guarantee that after one year they will never think shoveling the sidewalk or mowing the lawn is an ordeal.

edited, because I hit the button accidently!
Ok, how come it is that in 'the old days' like my grandparents, they ate bacon eggs the whole shebang for breakfast, worked hard on a farm, ate huge 'farm' suppers, and were not fat?
Yes, they worked hard. No washers and dryer for my grandma, so she did it everyday by hand, hung to dry, no dishwashers, and all the other conviences. Then my grandfather would work all day on the farm, which is hard work. And they both lived long, into their 90's. And they still ate the old way up until my grandmother couldn't cook any longer.

--Maybe all those folks who are fat because of Prozac wouldn't need the prozac in the first place if they'd get off their big old butts and do something.--
Physical labor(not pansy exercise, LABOR), does help with depression.....spend a day haying when it's 96 degrees and you won't worry about being depressed!
Goes back to my suggestion of a required year on a farm.
Taking care of something living besides yourself helps a lot, too.

Here's two cents coming from someone who has never had a weight problem: Who died and made all of you the judge and jury of what people should and should not weigh? The same people here who rant and rave about discrimination to gays, the poor, the ethnic groups, women, and others are now saying it's okay to discriminate against and say rotten things about someone who is over weight. Shame.
