My cat has run away again. For those of you who do not know, he lives with my parents in CA.

My mom is recovering from major surgery. The day she left for the hospital the came back briefly. The day she came home from the hospital he showed up again for a brief time.

Mom feels guilty for his leaving this time. One night he refused to go out because of the fireworks and she put him out.

The house is going major remodeling and that means workmen at the house all day long. They even put a new roof that kept him away from his "favorite" spot.

My mom thinks someone has taken him in. He is well fed.

I feel helpless being 3000 miles away. My mom can't do anything about it right now and my father has just given up.

Do cats just up and leave after 11 years in the same home?

a very sad Miss J

My aunt had a younger cat that always wondered the neighborhood. The cat was not as old as yours. I believe he was only 3 or so. One day he went out and never came back.
I guess it is possible.

Hopefully you are right and someone did take him in.

Begs the question, how come you don't have "your" cat??

Cats can respond very negatively to changes in their environment. I've seen them get physically ill to the point of death when favorite spots suddenly aren't there anymore. Let's hope he's found a better home.

My parents wanted to keep my cats for me. It was the best solution for me when I accepted a job on the east coast. I am never home. My parents will be selling their home before the year is over and that time I will take my cats when I move into my new place.

The other two cats stick to home. They spend most of their time in the house, They never wander off.

Tuxy on the other hand loves being outdoors. He favorite place is the roof top. He had the same routine for most of his 11 years. We like to say he has a "job".

All the construction being done on the house has upset him.

I want to put up fliers but my father feels that it would just attract scam artists.

Mom says he looked well fed so someone is feeding him.

Speaking of Cats.. I don't own a cat, I have 3 dogs though. But for those of you who do own cats, perhaps you can explain the odd behavior of a cat that used to roam the neighborhood..

I have a catahoula curr who weighs around 65 pounds.. She was trained from a pup to hunt wild boar.. but she is a big mush and the only thing I have ever seen her chase is squirrels....anyway on two separate occasions I witnessed with my own eyes this cat who would walk down the middle of the road and once she spied my dog she just tore after her and jumped on my dogs back and head and my poor dog would try to shake this cat off of her head and that thing would hold on with dear life, scratching and spitting...it was awful.. the first time I had to get a broom and knock it off of the dog.. the second time a neighbor saw it first and she tried to disengage the cat from my dog and that cat tore her up..

I have never seen a cat go on the attack like this without being provoked. Anyway it has disappeared, thank goodness.. wonder if any of you have seen this kind of behavior in your cats?

animals can see spirits, but I have never seen them attack spirits, dogs usually bark like hell.
of course no one believes them.
yes, cats do go away if they find someone better,a better payroll master.

Wow, I can't say I have ever heard of that happening. My cat Tux (this missing one) hated my sweet natured lab. If the dog got to close to him, Tuxy would give him a bloody nose. He also picked on the neighbors dogs too. This under ten pound cat is fearless.

So Popnrock..are you saying that your cat would attack the dog unprovoked? I can understand it if the cat was being chased or attacked by the dog.. but as strange as it sounds it looked like this cat was looking for a dog to pick on!LOL I have to wonder if it was feral.

Stop..now you've "Spooked" me... wonder if the cat saw some evil spirit in my pokadotty? eek..

stopwhining, I have always wondered if animals can see things we can't. My Carly was in bed one night when all of the sudden she started growling at the window. I got up and looked, nothing there. We had an earthquake that day and I guess that spooked her.

I had another cat would run around the house like a crazy. He would be meow, meow, meow..... next thing I know, we were having an earthquake.

As far as Tuxy attacking the dogs, he only did it if his space was invaded.

My Lovey (God rest her black soul) would back our German Shepherds into a corner and not let them out. The poor dogs would sit and whine and she would sit and watch them. It was always "her house" because she was there first. She didn't want them to forget it.

animals are more sensitive to changes in our physical environment, like the snakes will come out of their caves if they sense something moving underneath, someone in CA tracks the number of missing pets in diff areas of California to gauge if a quake is coming.
If you want to go further,it is the two parts of us-the lower and higher spirits or the conscience and unconscious, one is more physical and tuned in to earthly matters.
Or is it the BA and the Ka in ancient Egytian lore, the BA ascends and the Ka remains by the tomb after death.
The food placed for the death to eat, some clairvoyants can actually see the spirits eating,it is the KA who does the eating, not the BA.

I had one feisty old cat who if my Cocker Spaniel
dared get too close would bloody the dog up.
Another one of my cats loved dogs, go figure.
