So tonight I decide I'm going to sleep. I only got two hours yesterday so tonights the night. I'm going to do it. This is going to happen! So I crawl into bed and......my brain won't staop running with ideas for a project I have in mind. OK, I need to get this little bit of info and then my brain can relax and I can sleep. Get up, turn on Fox while I do my searches ...listen to that stupid commercial for GoToMyPc where you can access your home computer while climbing Mt Fuji because your business partner is a helpless idiot...of course you do need to first reach that infamous Mt Fuji internet cafe first and yell at the TV again. Google google googling... found the info I need!

OK I can't stop yawning, eyes burn, it must be that time... Now I will sleep. Crawl into bed and..............nada. nothing. ziltch! 45 minutes later I give in, figure a little Pogo should numb my brain. Play poker for awhile, listen to a commercial for Doggie Steps?!?! (Hey - has Fox covered anything in the past 24 hours other than a hurricane that has not hit yet?)... I'm zoning out... it must be time.....But noooooooooo. I think I got there but then the police car ran sirens screaming down the street and I'm awake now. I give in. I really am an insomniac. This sucks.

Hey.... I wonder what these Barbie doll heads would look like as Day of the Dead skulls?

Fenix - I can relate. I go through periods of the same things and it stinks. The body is tired, but the brain won't shut down. I started taking 5 HTP and that seemed to lessen the number of times I suffer from insomnia. You may also want to try meditation. My insomnia got me to a point where I would drive somewhere and actually not remember how I got there. That's how tired I really was. Give the 5 HTP a try. You can get it in a health food store or a drug store. 50 mg is what I take. You can try the 80 mg is the 50 mg doesn't work for you. Give it a couple of days.

fenix - A man might help distract you for a day or so.

But seriously before you start with any medications....try the mind over matter trick.

It's really not difficult and I've had to use it on and off over my life time and it's worked for me anyway.

First you have to 'feel really tired, physically'. So ask yourself if you're getting enough excerise to wear yourself out. If you believe you are AND are physically tired....then when you start thinking about anything....tell yourself to STOP....and immediately start thinking of just ONE very pleasant, calm experience you've had in your life....like laying on the beach is mine. I then start focusing on keeping my mind on that peaceful, tranquil thought ONLY.

Your mind will begin to wonder off again...on to all the things it is doing now....but again, just keep repeating to yourself STOP...and then begin again thinking of that 'peaceful' vision. It takes a while....but boy it sure worked for me. And I've continued to practice it whenever I want to really get to sleep.

Linda K--this is one of those rare occasions when I agree wholeheartedly with you! We should celebrate.

As a child, my family was invited to spend weeks at a time at a Lake Michigan beach cottage owned by friends. The cottage was in a tiny hamlet called Palisades Park, up the Michigan coast. We would drive from Chicago, through a bit of Indiana, and I think it would take about 2-3 hours at most, stopping at a fruit stand near the turnoff.

Those days were the Most Wonderful Days of My Life, and ditto for my brother. When I have trouble sleeping, I go to that place and usually can then fall asleep.

However, there are times when I'm worried about something and even that technique doesn't work as well as it should. I'll try your "stop" thing next time.

Fenix, I found that the best thing to DO is nothing...trying to DO something keeps me awake.
I just shrug it off and NOT WORRY ABOUT IT and in a day or two I sleep just fine.

MOst of the time I deal with it and it's fine. It's kinda like the ADD... yeah it can be a pain but I'm used to and have adjusted and incorporated it but every so often I want to have that sleep of the dead where you get 6-8 hours and small explosions go off outside your window and you just roll over and go back to sleep. Last night was one of those nights. One of the nights I wanted it, not that it happened. As usual I fell asleep around 3:30 4 and got up at 7:30. I'll try some of the recommenadtion next time.

Mingo - I try doing nothing but there have been nights that I have laid in bed for 3 hours trying to get to sleep and by the time I do I am so frustrated it's horrible sleep so if there is something running hard thru my brain I try to put it to rest so that my I can do the same.

I don't get a lot of sleep, usually about 5 hours a night. Sometimes less and very rarely more. I absolutely can not stand laying in bed wide awake. Lately, the thing that has been working for me is working out at night. I get to the gym at about 8:30, do a full workout and finish by running 2 or three miles on the treadmill. I get home by 10:30, relax and by 11:30 I'm ready for bed. If I'm really not feeling sleepy I may take a "Simply Sleep" which is Tylenol PM without the Tylenol. Those things put me right out.

Fenix, I know you don't like taking pills, but a safe pill to take if you have to is an alergy pill that makes you sleepy - not a non-drowsy one. Take one when you go to bed and watch tv for awhile. It might help.

"A man might help distract you for a day or so"

LoL Linda! A woman with ADD is no match for any man, expecially Fenix.

Here's something for all of us to think about: My husband was reading in a scientific journal about sleep patterns among humans for the last thousand years.

Seems the pattern was to go to bed when it became dark, wake up in the middle of the night and work at something for 2 or 3 hours, then go back to sleep. My husband likes to hear this since he is frequently awake in the middle of the night and has a rule not to give it more than 15 minutes before getting up to do something else.

The writer said our sleep patterns are different now that everyone has lighting after the sun goes down and we stay awake longer.
