Im due for a vacation. Having a name like mine, its obvious where I WANT to go...alas, dont know if I can this year. So...any suggestions?
I like to snorkel, swim in warm CLEAR water, dont want a long flight (too many airplanes are losing their engines in mid flight). I enjoy nature, country, and if I want, small towns and villages nearby for windowshopping. Was thinking about a cabin somewhere....or a houseboat on a lake? One that is fully equipped...a REAL houseboat with beds, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Thought about Florida, but its too crowded. Thought about Mexico, but its costs as much as Maui. Thought about Hawaiian Islands, but then we are back to engines-falling-out-and-Im-over-DEEP-water. Thought about Ireland (friend has a house there I can have for 350.00 for one week...but the airfare pertains to the sentences above) So...anyone know of the PERFECT place?
You can come sit under an Apple tree with me. We can watch the Sun come up, the clouds in the afternoon sky, watch the Sun set and the stars twinlke at night.

Kcat...my heart is in Maui. Probably will wind up there, but looking at alternatives. Hubby is balking a bit..said hes seen it all. I dont want to come with 2 guys (sonny boy is going too) because they wont do the "wandering Lahaina" thing with me, laugh at parrots on our heads, or play "lets try THIS outfit on". Need a girl to do girl things with and you wont, because you dont like stores and being inside (you native you). That leaves bringing the one you hate...but cant unless she has her own funds and so far, she doesnt. So, looking at other alternatives.
Barry (I like Green Apples dipped in Peanut butter) Barris...that sounds lovely too
On my last flight over the big pond and heading to the Best Coast, the pilot on one of the legs of the flight comes on and does his little weather spiel and then blithely announces, "Maybe some of you sitting on the left side of the plane saw part of the wing fall off."
He paused. There was a sudden intake of breath by all us sardines crammed onto the flight and I was amazed we didn't implode the fuselage.
Then he continued. "We don't think there will be a problem when we land."
The lady next to me laughed, rather bitterly I might add, and said, "Yeah, we won't know till we land, though, and then it will be too late."
As you can see, the pilot was correct. If he hadn't been, I would have been a statistic.

Kcat...still working it out on this end. If we come, and she has her half, then she can go too (she has to dig up a grand though, and so far, she doesnt have it). If she cant dig it up by October 5th, then she doesnt go, cause I want to come for my birthday (oct 11). If she DOES dig it up, then we will stay at the Maui Islander like always, and while she is hanging at the pool, the guys and I will come visit you so you can get some stuff repaired, and hang out and visit and such. Its all still up in the air...but D still wants to look at other alternatives. He was talking about a cabin somewhere, by a lake, so we could take the dogs, too. Anyway...still looking at other options. I can always leave D here, and come just by myself later on, ya know?

Toomanycomics: If you're going to do the Henry Ford/Greenfield Village thing, make two days of it. The museum is enormous, and if you're going to go with someone who wants to read ALL the little plaques in front of each and every display, you'll be there forever! I would either do the Village, or the museum, but not both in one day. JMHO.

Come to West Texas, Maui! It's beautiful this time of year. We can sit under the bug zapper and listen to the soothing sounds of the boll weevils in the cotton, watch the tide come in on the heat mirages, shop at Rip Griffin's Truck Stop and Curios, and dine alfresco on the corner where Mr. Gomez sells his tamales from his bicycle basket. (hey, these are really good , and keep the stray cat population down)
You'll be amazed at the glory of a sunset seen through dust, ooh and ah at the proliferation of wildlife remains on the highway, cry over what the local cafe can do with a steak and a deepfryer.
Nothing like the high plains in a drought! Book passage now to avoid the rush!

It was 107 degrees here today and that does NOT include the heat index. Record high since the 1930's. We are getting some fires. So far they have managed to be brought under control within 24 hours.

Lake Mead - houseboat rentals - clear warm water - views and sunsets to remember forever.
And Nutspec has done the "chunk-o-engine-fell-off" trick halfway between Hong Kong and SFO. Cool emergency landing in Tokyo and everything. Way cool watching three guys on an exit row (with eyes as big as plates) being told by the crewman "OK, if I am injured during this landing - here is how you get this door open".

When I was a kid, we flew to Japan on a Navy transport that was scheduled to be scrapped after our flight. The durned thing kept having engine trouble and it took us a week to cross the Really Big Pond.
We left Hawaii one evening and about four hours out one of the engines went. The pilots weren't sure if they could limp back to Hawaii or limp to Wake Island. We were told to prepare for a water landing, with the crew chief instructing us on how to get outta the plane in that instance as we put on our life jackets.
Fortunately, the pilots nursed the plane along and made it to Wake Island. But I attribute that experience as the reason I hate to fly.

Kcat...please remove that last post. Its gross, unnecessary and makes me uncomfortable. She DOES know I post here...she DOES have access. And so do others that live in this town who know exactly whom you are refering to. Please remove it.
posted on September 2, 2000 08:56:58 PMMauimoods-- I've traveled all over the country and I'm a (former) Californian, but unless you like crowds you might steer clear of some of those popular destinations. Tahoe, for instance. It's being "loved to death" by the tourists and summer vacationers who have despoiled the shorelines with their cottages and resultant pollution.
I like to get off the beaten path a bit. I avoid resorts at all costs. How about the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore? It's on the Wisconsin shoreline of Lake Superior, about 100 miles east of Duluth Minnesota. There's all the water you could snorkel/canoe/fish in a lifetime (a bit chilly maybe even in summer) and it's incredibly beautiful and unspoiled. Gotta get there before mid-September, though, if you want to get any warm-season recreation done. It gets cold early there!
If you like an area with plenty of countryside and small towns for shopping, you can't go wrong with the Door County Peninsula. Green Bay Wisconsin is the jumping-off point for your trip. from there the peninsula extends 75 miles into Lake Michigan. Loads of scenery, shopping, apples, fishing, camping, boating.
P.S. Guarantee the hubby hasn't "seen it all". My grandmother freely admits to having not, and she's 80, and travels frequently.

Petuniasevan, it sounds lovely where you suggest! And I hate Tahoe. Dont like Vegas...unless, of course, I could meet folks there from here, as a get-together, then I would go in a heartbeat! I will be going to Maui after all...but not until the middle of october. Sales were very good this week...and I have some wonderful things I scored today, so next weeks and the week after will be great too, Im sure. AND, my cc company upped my credit line, so things are looking good for Maui...and I am looking forward to it very much...want to go see Fred, the fish that hangs out at the reef there at mile 14, eating a big juicy burger at Hamburgers in Paradise, wonderful dinners in balmy evenings in Lahaina, road trip to Hana. Ah...I cant wait

Come on out to the Right Coast and visit me!!
I live by the Atlantic Ocean and the folks here are nice AND interesting - you will like the change. And bring along hubby and roomie - I would love to meet them! Or come alone if that's what you want. I can't promise a lot of excitement but you'll find it fun and interesting and now that Labor Day has come - the crowds will die down and the traffic will thin out as the tourists leave. The fall is beautiful here. I am going up to New Hampshire from 9/29 to 10/15 for my yearly Fall vacation but anytime before or after is fine.

Ubie, lol. Do you know there is a suntan lotion by the name of MAUIBABE? LOL....stuff is great and it works, too. Anyway, hate Tahoe because of bad memories there...miscarriage happened there, 10 years ago labor day weekend. If I hadnt of lost it, he/she would be 10 now ....so, no Tahoe. Lived in Iowa before too....no likey, lol.
Nobs...lets go to Ireland! You, me and roomie...she has a cousin who owns a home there and we can get it for 350.00 for one week. Hubby isnt interested in Ireland...so lets us three go! Wouldnt it be great? Next summer! Or, next spring!

Maui-Ireland sounds so cool! My oldest daughter wanted me to take her to Ireland as a graduation present! YEAH RIGHT! It was just a wee bit out of the price range then.
We have my grandmothers Bible, and she came from Ireland, and the names of relatives, she wants to look up there! Yikes! Never been into the geneology (sp?) thing, but she really really wants to do this.... so we may....
