This was somewhat surprising, but should fill the vacancy fast, now will O'Connor still retire so another selection can be made?

She said she would stay on until a replacement could be confirmed. She actually sounded disappointed. I think she was expecting to retire next month. Now nobody knows how many more months it could take.

That will all depend on how long the dems in Congress decide to do everything they can to obstruct these two seats being filled. They need more time to find some 'new' garbage.
They've already started on Robert's, who should be a 'shoe in' for Chief Justice, filling in Rehrinquist's shoes. And I thought I'd heard the President had already decided on who he was going to nominate for O'Connor's seat. Maybe I didn't hear it correctly. I'll have to check.

I think that Linda is a bit confused. Bush is the one who keeps appointing garbage. We see where that got us with Homeland Security and FEMA. If the Conservatives want to bring trash to the table, then don't blame the Democrats for tossing it aside.

Linda even the dems have said that given that he answer one question he should pass thru quickly. the only thing at issue is whether he believes in a constitutional right to privacy.
I think that republicans are going to end up looking quite silly with all of their hype and finger pointing when even the dems have said that Roberts will probably be confirmed without much hassle.

I really thought Scalia would be nominated for the Post, I wonder why Bush chose Roberts rather than Scalia?

If Scalia had been nominated, would he have had to go through another complete confirmation hearing?

If a sitting justice is nominated for Chief there is another set of confirmation hearings. We have enough to deal with without tying the system up fir a third hearing even if the third would not have been as rigorous.
I wonder if the Roberts will make the stripes an ongoing tradition.
