Did anyone watch this unfold last night on the news - after taking off from Burbank a Jet Blue flight to JFK found that their front landing gear was turned almost at a 90 degree angle.
For some reason their plane did not have the capability to dump their fuel (I thought all planes had to be able to do this). So they flew around for 3 hours before landing at LAX.
They landed successfully - pilot did a great job.

Saw that. If you read the "summer vacation" thread Near and I were talking about it there. Great landing but I still think that if they had to fly around for 3 1/2 hours they at least should have gone to Vegas. Just think... spend 3 1/2 hours in the air and land just in time to have to get on the 405 at rush hour.

Yes, the pilot did an incredible job--hardly deviated at all from the line in the center of the runway. Hope he gets a bonus.

Yes, obviously an experienced pilot....great landing. I glad I wasn't in that plane worrying about what my future was when we landed ....for three whole hours. I'd have been a basket case, I'm sure.

I'm not sure what channel I had on but just after Fox News replayed their safe landing....a Jet Blue airlines commercial came on. LOL....talking to myself I said, "This may not be the very best timing for them to be running their commerical to encourage travels to choose their airline to travel on."

I had the exact opposite reaction, Linda. After seeing the way that pilot handled the emergency landing, I think that is exactly the airline I'd want to be flying on.

Well...bunni....that is true too. I was just looking at it from a a possibility of poor maintainence on their part. Like a lot of other airlines, they've probably cut back on the time allowed, because of cost, for maintaining their fleet. Maybe not though....but it was my thought when I saw their commerical.

Jet Blue is one of the few airlines that is doing well. they have streamlined their schedule, stayed out of overly expensive airports, and basically acted like an airline that wants to succeed. They looked at the SouthWest recipe for success, added a dash of their own flavor and ran with it. No need to scrimp - they actually make money

More evidence for avoiding airplanes whenever possible, especially when sober. If god meant us to fly he would have given us unlimited bonus miles.

I heard they were showing the news reports live in the cabin - so those poor passengers were watching these horrible predictions of what could happen on their landing. Some of them weren't happy about that - and I don't blame them!
I'd be in a complete panic up there. I don't think there would be enough miniatures there to keep me calm.

Caroline - Jet Blue has the seat back screens and a Direct TV contract. It's not like the old days when there was one program shown on a single screen per cabin. You can choose the station you want to watch. No one had to watch. All they had to do was change the channel.
The ditsy blonde on Fox's Dayside tried to make it into a much bigger deal than it was.

Fenix is right.
In addition, having watched those news reports myself, 99% of the coverage was actually positive. Every TV & radio station that I tuned into had experts on who were saying that most likely the plane would land without crashing. They emphasized that past similar cases had turned out well. Yes, there was mention of what might happen, but that wasn't hyped.
If I'd been a passenger, that would have buoyed me up. It could very well be that those broadcasts prevented a lot of panic.

I had no idea they had direct TV on planes now, or that they could change the channel. I don't think I could have watched - even if much of the coverage was positive.

So much better than those two year old, didn't want to see them in the first place, movies.
