I just finished watching The Notebook on DVD - I'm still blowing my nose - what a tearjerker - I give it 2 thumbs up! Now I have to go into by Blockbuster queue and figure out what to get next.
Anybody have any recommendations? I'm not big in to sci-fi, husband likes action, I like comedy & drama.

I've seen a few:
A couple of weeks ago I saw a great Belgian thriller called "Mind of a Killer" about a hit man who discovers he's in the early stages of Alzheimers.
A wonderful Bollywood film, "Bride & Prejudice"--musical, Indian version of Pride & Prejudice.
Just saw Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" this week--pretty good, but not at the level of his "Nightmare Before Christmas."
Just rewatched a 1943 German film I recorded off of TCM a couple of weeks back called "Munchhausen"--great fantasy film based on the Baron Munchhausen tall tales.
Actually, I have been doing a lot of re-watching lately from my DVD collection:
The Bourne Identity (original 70s mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain)
Daddy Long Legs with Fred Astaire
He Who Gets Slapped with Lon Chaney Sr.
Mad Love with Peter Lorre
Requiem for a Heavyweight (50s TV w/ Jack Palance)
Jane Eyre (70s BBC mini-series w/ MIchael Jayston & Sorcha Cusack)
I've also been watching some old TV series that have been released on DVD: McCloud, McMillan & Wife, and Have Gun Will Travel.

Bunni, that was one good movie!
The Elephant Man has to be one of my favorites. If any of you ever need a kick in the butt because you think you have too many problems, watch that movie.

Yes, "Elephant Man" is one of the best. John Hurt turned in an amazing performance.

Just saw "Downfall" on DVD. It's an import about the final weeks of Hitler in his Bunker. Really good acting, and very historically acurate so far as I could tell.
If you're at all into anime, "Steamboy" just came out, and it's also very good.
I'm planning on seeing the Corpse Bride, but it's not really high on my to-do list, so it may not happen until it hits DVD.

Boys Dont Cry was really good - hadn't seen Soldier's Girl - but I'll try it - just put it in my queue. Speaking of Hillary Swank - Million Dollar Baby was great - not what I expected at all. She was incredible in it.
I had House, MD in my queue, it's coming up soon - I love that show!

I bought the House DVD set when it was released. I wish they'd included more extras, but otherwise it is great.
Next week they're releasing Kolchak the Night Stalker and I'm planning on buying that. It only ran for one season, but I remember loving the show. I already have the two TV-movies the series was based on. :c)
Also in October, they are releasing a new 3 disc edition of "The Wizard of Oz." It will feature a restored print, two or three documentaries, several existing silent Oz films, and more.

One of the best movies i've seen lately was 'Ray' staring Jamie Foxx, portraying Ray Charles. It told of his life from childhood to his death at the age of 73. it flashes back to his childhood alot and shows, when at an early age his brother died and shortly after he went blind and how his mother deliberately wouldn't help him much, but for his own good so he could learn faster to get on with life being blind. It was kinda a long movie and you have to plan on watching it for, i forget now, 3 or 4 hours. Some women might view it as kinda a tearjerker but i saw it as a very interesting biography of a man of musical genius and the music was awesome in the movie.

Just got home from seeing "A History of Violence" with Vigo Mortenssen. Interesting film about a man in a small town who thwarts a robbery/murder in his diner and suddenly becomes the focus of out-of-town mobsters. I really could have done without the oral sex scene and the sex-on-the-stairs scene (not that Mortenssen's naked tush isn't cute, but...), but overall it is an intriguing little thriller.

M Butterfly is a rather bizarre movie with Jeremy Irons,I am not going to give away the ending.
It is based on real case of a French diplomat in China,I have to watch it a few times to catch certain acts.
I think the lesson behind it is-when a foreigner wanders deep into local culture and customs which have been flourishing for thousand of years and think it is as simple as it appears on the surface,he is in for a big shock.
If the poor French man had watched another movie called FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE which won an award at the Cannes festival before he commenced a relationship with a Peking opera singer,he could have saved his career and his life!!

Just saw HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG on DVD last night. Neat movie, although you just MUST watch the deleted scenes to see other ways the movie could have ended (even MORE depressing!). Interesting to watch such a simple situation get soo completely out of control.
Has Ben Kingsley ever been in a BAD movie?

what do you mean by deleted scenes of HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG??
In the end,he served his wife some tea ? and put a plastic bag over his head!!
The whole story is sad,get all dressed up in the morning in suit and tie and drive away in his mercedes to work as a construction worker or managing a seven eleven store ,listing his expenses like 35 cents for a chocolate bar and 3000 for house rent??
or is house rent more than 3k??
face saving is big among immigrants from upper and upper middle class family.
It is very hard to start a new life in a foreign country, you either sit home and eat away your savings or start a new business and watch it dwindle .

Every movie has deleted scenes that are edited out for various & sundry reasons. Many DVDs will include those deleted scenes.

I haven't seen "spooky house," but I think I'll try to avoid it.
I agree about the whole immigrant/double job thing. That was very realistically done. I know a few immigrants, and they are the hardest working people I know. There is a reason all the engineers and doctors are foreigners. Americans have gotten way too comfortable and lazy. But let's not turn this into a political thread
"what do you mean by deleted scenes of HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG??"
Sand & Fog DVD Spoiler Below:

.
.
.
.
In the deleted scene, Kingsley violently strangles Jennifer Connelly when he returns home. The double-suicide occurs after that. In the theatrical release, Connelly is still alive at the end of the movie. There was also a deleted scene where the Iranian family, while being the deputy's hostages, are very kind and ask him to sit down to dinner while he's still holding a gun on them.
I assume these were deleted to give the movie a more upbeat (LOL!) ending than simply having everyone die.

I saw House of Sand and Fog last year on cable - I may have to rewatch it on DVD. Couldn't help myself though - just HAD to read the spoiler of the deleted scene!
OK Pi, just put Ray in the queue - it hadn't sounded very interesting when it came out, but I'm going to give it a try.

Is the movie based on true story?I know it is from a book.
I have heard that many Iranian immigrants come from upper middle class family back in Iran, but they did not bring a lot of money with them,so buying a foreclosed house and flipping it to turn a profit makes sense to me.
I know of a Vietnamese family who were car dealer in Saigon during the war and they came to PALO ALTO,California back in the 60s and started buying houses there.
They must have 10-15 houses ,each of these houses is now worth 1 million plus.

I watched it on the DVD as well, from Netflix, and there is no strangling scene, not that I recall.
It seems after his son died in the hospital,he went home and dealt with his wife, that was the ending.
Do you remember that scene early on when he bot the house and went home to tell his wife they are moving? His wife was polishing a large tray and refused to move,he followed her to the bedroom and threw a few things on the floor and said do you want to be like the others, homeless on the streets??
After he bot the house, his married daughter and in laws came and they all celebrate on the roof deck ,toasting each other with wine and lo and behold, appetizers were served on a large silver tray??
He told his daughter and the in laws, this humble house is nothing like the one back near the caspian sea,it is just for 'INVESTMENT'!!

-<MORE SPOILERS, DON'T READ>-
"It seems after his son died in the hospital,he went home and dealt with his wife"
It was immediately after he went home from the Hospital. He found her there and killed her in the living room, then did the thing with his wife in the back of the house (she didn't hear the struggling). In the final version, Connelly was out wandering around the beach when he came home from the hospital.
"no strangling scene,not that I recall. "
No, not in the "real" movie. If you look at the deleted scenes on the DVD, it's in there.
I too heard it was based on a book, so why they made two such different endings is beyond me. I would assume in the book, everyone died, but they wanted someone to survive in the theatrical release, so they changed the ending. I didn't listen to the Director's commentary, but I would bet they explain it in there.
And yes, I watched the Netflix version, so it's not a special version or anything.

That's like the Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kusher. I'm not usually a fan of his but this one had such interesting word out on it I had to give it a run. The funny thing is that I watched it last night and realized that I had completely forgotten the theatrical ending. It was actually the deleted ending that was strong enough to stay with me. Not as romantic but a damn site more interesting.

Ms.Fenix and others that use Netflix..I have a question.
I signed up and ordered my DVD's last Friday, they still haven't arrived...how long do you usually wait for delivery? Thanks Maggie

depends on where you live,if they have a distribution centre in your city, you could get it the next day.
These days mail is kind of slow in our area due to canes.
