Iraq.

Interesting article....for everyone, imo, but especially those who think it would be better if we withdraw our troops from Iraq immediately.

Read it...hear their plans....believe they fully intend to meet their goals. Get out of denial from what our country is really facing.

Zawahiri's Lament
What our enemy thinks about Iraq.
Thursday, October 13, 2005 12:01 a.m. EDT

Ayman al Zawahiri and George W. Bush don't agree on much. But al Qaeda's No. 2 leader and the U.S. President are in accord on one thing: Iraq is the central battlefield.

This is just one of the many insights into the mind of the terrorist braintrust gleaned from an extraordinary document obtained this summer by U.S. forces in Iraq and released yesterday by the White House.

It is a 6,000-word letter from Zawahiri, presumably in hiding in Pakistan, to al Qaeda's commander in Iraq, Abu Musab al Zarqawi.

We're glad the Administration made the decision to declassify it. It goes a long way toward letting Americans see what we are up against in Iraq and elsewhere in the world.

The letter's full text is up on the Web site of the Director of National Intelligence at http://www.dni.gov

Those who want a premature U.S. withdrawal from Iraq will now have to explain why that won't play into the hands--and plans--of the enemy. Zawahiri makes it quite clear that al Qaeda's ambitions extend well beyond the borders of any one country. The goal is a fundamentalist Islamic regime that begins in Iraq, extends into the neighboring secular nations of the region, assaults Israel and moves on from there. And yes, he uses the word "caliphate."

Linda,
I had read that yesterday in the paper and was thinking pretty arrogant.

But still does not preclude the US from having a timeline for leaving Iraq.

Iraqi's will have to stand on their own two feet sometime.

Hi Ron - I still don't agree with you on the 'timeline'. It will come about when we feel they can defend themselves....as it should be, imo.

And Ron...I really believe that most American's will not support a democrat, no matter who they are, in the next election IF they believe that person isn't willing to see what our country is facing from these extremists. They will continue to want to feel, whether it's true or nor, that our future President will not sit back and wait until we are attacked again to take the necessary action to fight these fanatics.

::I still don't agree with you on the 'timeline'. It will come about when we feel they can defend themselves::

Yes, but as anyone that has ever managed a group of people knows, a timeline is a not just something that sets some random date... it's what keeps the people in charge of the project from taking their own sweet time. There is no rule that states that it cannot be extended if neccessary but this "we'll do it when we do it" attitude is not exactly the most motivating force the military could come up with.

Those decisions, imo, are best left to those who have the most knowledge of what's actually going on in this situation....our military leaders who communicate with our President. Not in the hands of liberals who opposed the war to begin with.

So at this point int time you feel that the interest of the majority only applies the fiurst Tuesday of November? I hate to break it to you Linda but there are a lot of conservatives that would like to see a timeline - people that voted for Bush. What pithy ratioale do you offer for ignoring them?

My pithy answer/rationale is that the man/women who is elected gets to make these decisions...that's why their job description also calls them Commander-In-Chief.

Linda a timeline does not take away any decision making, on the contrary it requires more because you have to make the decisions of when certain actions take place.

It also does not take away the Commander-in-Chiefs role.

But do you not expect the Iraqi's to be responsible for their own security at some point in time?

Of course I fully expect the Iraqi's to be able to defend themselves. But I never thought/believed that was going to happen overnight either. They were under saddam's rule for what? 35 years....taught to be submissive not to fight back. Plus it's not just an easy matter to train them to 'think/plan' in a militaristic manner either. It's not just a problem of picking up arms and going off to shoot someone. You should know that Ron. There's a lot more involved.

Plus I agree with those who hold the thought process that to give our enemies a 'date' we will leave....only encourages them to fight harder and stronger...to not allow them to at least consider they may lose or that others might tire of the fight and give up.

And on your second post....for me and mine...we'll believe what our US intelligence tells us....and not take the word of AQ for as truth for anything.

Also, Ron, on your other statement:

"It also does not take away the Commander-in-Chiefs role.

I couldn't disagree more with that statement. The CIC's job is to protect our Nation....whether we agree with the way they choose to do it or not. So to take away the way HE/SHE decides to do just that.....is to force them to do something other than what they feel, at that time, IS in our Nations best intersest.

They were given that power by our founders for a reason....war wasn't put to a vote of the changing minds of the public. And I believe that's a good thing....as the general public doesn't know all that our intelligence and President do. No one can deny that....it's not all reported in our news media.

Absolutely

I gave my liberal neighbors son a book for his birthday. He went crazy trying to find where to put the batteries.

#1- The world was lied to about WMD threat.

#2- We shouldn't have gone to war in the first place.

#3- Waste of soldier lives, money, and resources that could have been put to better use protecting this country from terrorist threats, disease, natural disasters.

#4- When they did go to war based on lies, Bush and his cronies didn't even bother to use enough troops to do their dirty work safely so that our kids wouldn't die.

#5- A little too late to pull out now that we created a mess. It is going to take a real President with balls to do the job right, and that person is definately NOT George W. Bush.

# 6. Our Congress just finished approving more funding for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. No withdraw planned at this point....no bill on the floor to do so either. They showed their continued support of this war by their votes....both dems and republicans.

Not having control must be soooo hard for some to accept.

Linda - you are the only person I know that can be smug when speaking of war. It's kinda creepy. I don't think I've ever come across someone that gets so giddy about the endless funding of death.

Has absolutely nothing to do with being 'giddy' or liking war or deaths fenix. But you knew that.

It has to do with the FACTS. And our Congress controls the purse strings.....no approved funding...no more war. But they're not doing that...not going in that direction. They're supporting the continuation of this war because they understand why it's necessary we don't pull out too early. They understand we don't want AQ et al to think we're quitters who will let them win.

Even if you anti-war folks don't - the elected dems can.

Hey Linda_K, I wonder what Iraq's army and police force are going to do with all the insurgents that have by mission infiltrated them.

Hey Linda_K, did you know todays Bush photo opp. The one where Bush was asking questions to American troops in Iraq was not only staged but REHEARSED. If not you need to watch the news more its all over most stations.

IT SEEMS LIKE BUSH AND HIS HOUSE OF LIARS CAN'T BE UP FRONT,STRAIGHTFORWARD OR TRUTHFUL ABOUT ANYTHING.

A while back one of the posters on this board asked when Bush's ratings would dip to somewhere in the 20 percent level. At the time I didn't think it possible but now I am not so sure.
