I was really looking forward to joining Netflix after reading y'alls posts about how great it was.. so I started out with their 2 week free trial. I opted for the 2 movies at a time deal..well.. here's the skinny.. I'm getting 2 movies a week. They have been arriving on a Wed. I ship them back the next day, Thurs.. and then I get the next 2 the following Wed..so that will give me 8 movies a month...until this last time...I mailed them back on Thursday of last week.. I received one movie back today the other scheduled to arrive tomorrow..so now it will be more like one movie a week? My distribution center is in Jackson MS.. approximately 6 hour drive north of us.. so I don't know what the problem is.. I've read that most everyone gets their movies in a 1 or 2 day turn around...I think it isn't going to be worth my 14.00+ a month for the amount of movies I'm recieving...what do you think?

it sounds kind of slow.
Have you looked into blockbuster, walmart etc?
Walmart is terrible, they ship from ARKANSAS.There are also small players ,one of them will ask you to ship the dvd to the next subscriber.it costs like 10 dollars a month but you have to provide the postage.

Netflix shipping can be sporadic. I am on the 3 at a time plan and some weeks I can get 6 some weeks only the 3 depending how fast I ship them back.

I'll look into Blockbuster..at first I thought it was slow because of being in the hurricane area, but there shouldn't be a problem coming straight down from Jackson..
Who knows where the delay is...but thanks for the advice, I'll see what Blockbuster has to offer.. Maggie

So sometimes you only get one delivery a week also, Ron? It looks like 14.00+ a month for 4 movies isn't a bargain.. I pay 2.99 at the local movie gallery here per movie.. but the hassle of going to get them and bring them back has to be taken into consideration.. I guess..
Thanks Maggie
Hey wait, I'm not doing the math right, am I..
That would be 8 movies a month which is a bargain... I'm just so confused..

T..i...M...E... is on my side...yes..it..is..
Well, Classy, I'd rather be spending my time watching movies than kissing Lindak's butt like you do..of course I'd imagine as big as it is that would take up quite a lot of your time..

The guy whose links Helen posted is the one with too much time on his hands!
As I've said before, I'm happy with Netflix, but maybe I've just gotten lucky, but I have been with them for more than a year, probably closer to two.
Actually, I'm thinking of dropping them, but not for the reason listed above.
A) It's getting harder and harder to find anything I'm interested in that I haven't already seen. I spent onths watching complete TV series, but I'm starting to run out of even those.
B) I'm spending WAY too much time downloading oddball stuff (that isn't even available on DVD yet) through BitTorrent. The newest "Doctor Who" from the UK, the old "Logan's Run" series from the 70's and much more. Pretty neat!
I have only four or five movies in my Netflix queue, and that's a record low. I may not add any more. I think I'm going to take six onths off and wait until they get more new stuff in

We LOVE our Netflix. From Portland to Salem, the turnaround is usually 2 days from the day I send a movie back. If I ship a movie back on Monday, I normally get my next movie on Wednesday. There have been just a few occassions where it took longer, but you also should notice that not every movie will come from your closest distribution center. I have received some movies that had a return address to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It then takes 3 to 4 days. This has only happened a few times though, and I cannot complain. It saves me the $$$ from LATE FEES!!! I think I've coughed up a years salary in Late Fees since I began renting movies.
Also, I received an email from Netflix over a Class Action Lawsuit because they guaranteed next day service and wasn't providing it. I got it this past week. I'm not going to bother with it b/c it is a negative checkoff system where you have to opt out of the upgrade after a month. I always get screwed by that. Here is what it read:
You are receiving this notice because you were a paid Netflix member before January 15, 2005. Under a proposed class action settlement, you may be eligible to receive a free benefit from Netflix.
A class action lawsuit entitled Chavez v. Netflix, Inc. was filed in San Francisco Superior Court (case number CGC-04-434884) on September 23, 2004. The lawsuit alleges that Netflix failed to provide "unlimited" DVD rentals and "one day delivery" as promised in its marketing materials. Netflix has denied any wrongdoing or liability. The parties have reached a settlement that they believe is in the best interests of the company and its subscribers.
Netflix will provide eligible subscribers with the benefit described below, if the settlement is approved by the Court.
Current Netflix Members: If you enrolled in a paid membership before January 15, 2005 and were a member on October 19, 2005, you are eligible to receive a free one-month upgrade in service level. For example, if you are on the 3 DVDs at-a-time program, you will be upgraded to the 4 DVDs at-a-time program for one month. There will be no price increase during the upgraded month. (If you cancel your membership after October 19, 2005 and before you receive the upgrade, you will have to rejoin to get the upgrade.)
Former Netflix Members: If you enrolled in a paid membership before January 15, 2005 but were not a member on October 19, 2005, you are eligible to receive a free one-month Netflix membership on your choice of the 1, 2 or 3 DVDs at-a-time unlimited program. (If you rejoin after October 19, 2005 but before you receive the free one-month membership, you will receive a credit for the free month when it becomes available.)
These benefits will be provided after the Effective Date as defined in the Settlement Agreement. Your eligibility for the benefits is based on your membership status as of October 19, 2005. The full Settlement Agreement is available for review at www.netflixsettlement.com.
You have four options to respond to the proposed settlement. You have until December 28, 2005 to make your decision:
Option 1. Sign Up For The Benefit As Part Of The Settlement
To receive the benefit, you must complete the online registration process no later than February 17, 2006, at www.netflixsettlement.com. By signing up for the benefit, you waive your right to bring a separate lawsuit against Netflix concerning the Released Claims (as defined in the Settlement Agreement found at www.netflixsettlement.com).
Option 2. Do Nothing
If you do not wish to receive the benefit, do nothing. You will not receive the benefit but will remain a Class Member. You therefore waive your right to bring a separate lawsuit against Netflix concerning the Released Claims.
Option 3. Exclude Yourself From the Class
To exclude yourself from the class, you must mail a letter by December 28, 2005. By excluding yourself, you preserve your right to bring a lawsuit against Netflix concerning the Released Claims. However, you will not get the benefit described above.
Option 4. Make An Objection To The Settlement In Court
To object to the settlement, you must file legal papers in the San Francisco Superior Court by January 5, 2006.
To receive your benefit, you must register by February 17, 2006 as described above in Option 1. You will not receive any other reminders to register for the benefit. If you have registered for the benefit and your eligibility is confirmed, then you will be provided additional information by email following the Effective Date as defined in the Settlement Agreement.
After the benefit period ends, the new or upgraded level of service will continue automatically (following an email reminder) and you will be billed accordingly, unless you cancel or modify your subscription. You can cancel or modify your subscription at any time.
In addition, if the settlement is approved by the Court, Netflix will modify portions of its Terms of Use. Netflix also will refer to its Terms of Use in certain advertisements.
To get more information about the settlement and procedures, and to take options 1, 3 or 4, visit www.netflixsettlement.com.

Rusty, I got that message too. When I clicked on the link, it took me to a site that looked nothing like Netflix, but wanted by username and password.
I figured it was a phishing scam and ignored it.
Do you have any special reason to believe that it's for real?

You know, there is some truth in what you said Colin..I have seen the difference in work ethics and Northerners most always appear to be harder and faster workers in comparison.. it could have something to do with our miserable heat down here..
You can always tell a Northerner down here.. he's/she's the one finishing everyones sentences...ha ha ha.. we don't talk fast enough for their liking..

Blockbuster sucks! I gave them a try out of curiosity - started with 3 dvds...took a week for them to arrive.
Walmart either has, or is in the process of, doing away with their service due to extreme disinterest.

I'm still receiving our new movies the next day after returning them. For example, I can mail the movie back on a Monday, NetFlix receives it on Tuesday, and I receive the next movie on Wednesday.
There have been a couple of occasions where it took more than one day, but I think it was the post office's fault, not NetFlix.
Over the last 6 months or so that I've been a member, I received two discs that arrived damaged in the mail, but NetFlix sent me replacements immediately. So no complaints there.
I'm still a happy customer with over 100 movies in my queue.

maggie-I remember doing Navy Reserve duty in New Orleans the first two weeks in July 1974-the humidity was brutal.
posted on November 4, 2005 07:30:19 PM
I don't think people realize just how brutal the heat and humidity is down here until they experience it first hand like you did Classy.
It sometimes feels like breathing through cotton wool, suffocating!
For the woman on the board who wear make-up, it disolves before you get from your house to your car.. and your sunglasses steam up the moment you turn the air on in the car..you live in a constant state of being moist..

You get out of the shower and never get dry, your towels have scent that you never really notice until you leave a humid area and remember what they smell like when they are not damp for three days, your hair takes on a special frizz all it's own... but on an up note...your skin is in fantastic condition.
On the otherside of the coin... being in the land of 10% humidity is a little taste of dry hell. My normal intake of 4 quarts of tea is up six and sometimes 8 because I have discovered a new set of allegies that leave my throat dry and itchy 24 hours a day - I go thru a pitcher of tea during the night because I wake up with my throat dries up. As for your skin... who needs a note pad when you can just scratch the grocery list in your arm?

Fenix-I was in Las Vegas in July of 1975
for a week-it was HOT.I was in the pool at 9:am-by 10:30am you had better be back inside or you would have fried. If I had my choice,Id much rather have the dry heat of Vegas then the hunmidity of New Orleans.

some folks love that humidity of New Orleans,it gives them more reason to drink beer and eat crawfish and do nothing!
It is the mildew and fungus sprouting in the house and the stinking garbage on the street which make a person want to leave the town as soon as they sober up!

I can understand Walmart wants to exit this business, they do better selling cheap DVD and VHS tapes in their stores.
As for Blockbusters, you get two free rentals from their brick and mortar store, but they dont have as many distribution centres as Netflix.
What ever happens to AMZN,they are thinking of getting into this business?
Sometimes I wonder if Netflix wants to slow down as the two way postage could add up,say you get 15 DVD in a month, how much is postage??
I have been using Netflix for a while a love it. I started with the three at a time plan, but recently have dropped down to the one at at time, simply because I am not home that much to watch movies right now. When I was using the 3 at a time plan, I would get a movie on Monday, return it on Tuesday and would get a new one either on Wednesday or Thursday. The distribution center is only about an hour from me.
I have heard from others that use Netflix, that if you turn over the movies quickly, Netflix notes you as a heavy user and will slow down the processing time a bit. They will blame it on the post office for slow delivery, but in reality it is more likely them. Don't know how true this is, but I do not see why they can not ship the same day when they receive a movie you return.

Sorry to hear about your problems with netflix. It does seem as if your experiences so far have been bad.
Is the mail service in your area slow in general because of the storms or has is it back to the way things were before Katrina?
I have co-workers that use the Blockbuster program and have not heard anything negative about it. You may want to give that one a try and see if it is any better.

I have been using Netflix for a few years now. The turn around is quick. My only problem is that the last three DVDs I have received have been damaged. They ship a replacement right away. I was on the three plan. Now I get two a week. That is all I have time for.
