WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- Students and staff at Wheat Ridge High School have been alerted to watch for a man pretending to be a police officer who pulled over a senior on her way to school.

The female student was stopped on 38th Avenue near Kipling Street at about 8:15 a.m. Monday by a car with a spinning light on the dash.

The impersonator told her he had pulled her over because she ran a red light and then asked her to get out of her car. The girl told the man that she didn't think she ran and red light and was going to call 911.

The man then told the girl that she should watch her attitude with police officers. He walked back to his car and drove away. The girl drove to school and reported the incident to the school's resource officer.

The man is described as a white, 6 feet tall, with dark hair and a goatee. He was driving a dark blue Dodge Intrepid. The student told police that he wore a gun and handcuffs on his belt.

Officers said the girl did the right thing. You can always call 911 to verify that you have been stopped by a law enforcement officer.
