Democrats Win Gov. Races in Va., N.J.

(AP) - Democrats swept both governors' races Tuesday, with Sen. Jon Corzine easily winning New Jersey and Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine taking Virginia despite a last-minute campaign push for his opponent from President Bush.
Elsewhere, Texas voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage, GOP Mayor Michael Bloomberg easily clinched a second term in heavily Democratic New York, and Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was trailing in his re-election bid.
In California, ballot measures that would cap spending and take redistricting away from lawmakers were trailing while two others targeting public service unions were ahead. All four were strongly backed by GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in his power struggle with the Democratic-controlled Legislature.
Kaine had 1,006,887 votes, or 51.6 percent, to Kilgore's 902,264 votes, or 46.2 percent, with 99 percent of precincts reporting.
In New Jersey, Democratic Sen. Jon Corzine trounced Doug Forrester, with 1,124,945 votes, or 53.4 percent, to 912,130 votes, or 43.3 percent, for the Republican, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.
In a jubilant speech, Corzine pledged that his administration would put New Jersey's citizens first. "As your governor, together we can change the way the public business is done in New Jersey."
In Virginia, Kaine said his victory proved that voters prefer centrist government. "Tonight, the people of Virginia have sent a message loud and clear that they like the path we are on."
Bush appeared at a Monday night rally with Kilgore _ the first public campaign appearance with the president in a state that twice voted for Bush.
"There's no way to spin this than anything other than a major defeat for Republicans and for President Bush," said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato. "This is a red state, he came in on Election Eve and he had no discernible effect. ... If anything, he may have cost Kilgore some votes."

After President Bush's disastrous visit to Latin America, it's unnerving to realize that his presidency still has more than three years to run. An administration with no agenda and no competence would be hard enough to live with on the domestic front. But the rest of the world simply can't afford an American government this bad for that long.
What few people in America understand, despite the astute observations of millions of individuals around the world, is that we are living in an empire, and we are no longer living in a democracy. Every last semblance of democracy in our nation that, in our desperate denial, we leave our claw marks on, is evaporating with each tick of the clock.. America’s allies and enemies internationally are calling like it is: Within four years, the so-called democratic republic of the United States will be unrecognizable. Without question, we can expect the destruction of Roe v. Wade, the packing of the Supreme Court with Christian fascist maniacs, the invasion of Iran, Syria, North Korea, and Colombia, to name a few. Even more horrifying is the likelihood that one of the cavalier, oil-sucking exploits will end up in a nuclear exchange. We can count on a ghastly tanking of the U.S. economy and a government policy of privatization (piratization?) on steroids. Endless versions of and addendums to the Patriot Act will become the law of the land, and another terrorist attack, deliberately planned, orchestrated and financed by persons in the U.S. government and the energy and financial sectors will almost certainly occur. It will undoubtedly catapult the nation into Code Red and martial law. The folks who could not grasp the futility of voting for a corporate candidate or a third-party candidate who cannot possibly win have not allowed themselves to comprehend that the Machiavelli-worshipping neoconservatives of the Bush Crime Family WILL NEVER, I said, WILL NEVER, turn over this government willingly—not in 2004, not in 2008, not EVER. They proudly proclaim that they have no problem with doing WHATEVER is required to remain in power. That includes rigging elections, assassinations, book-cooking, and above all, carefully crafting their personal propaganda machine, the American corporate media.
When an old paradigm no longer serves its adherents, serving the paradigm becomes absurdly self-destructive. Already, liberal democrats are delusionally thinking about the election they naively assume will happen in 2008, determined to resuscitate the decrepit, dying paradigm which fantacizes that some Hillary or some Obama will save us. When people understand the term, “fascist empire,” and when they fully grasp that they are living in one, they will no longer waste precious physical, mental, or spiritual energy applying the bandaids of defunct democracy to the cancer of world domination and domestic devourment.

I think people that use quaint terms like "fascist empire" they pick up from their favorite college professor or web site should interview people who understand what the term means.

Quaint/?????? There's NOTHING quaint about this professor....she's very much anti-American....just read what her link goes on to say about her opinions on kerry and her views on him and the 9-11 issue.
This woman is MAD...lunitic fringe...and anyone, even the MOST liberal here who reads this article and agrees with her or HELEN have lost their minds.
I'd just LOVE to see ANYONE here agree with this professors opinion of America. I'll bet helen soon cries she doesn't either. She only posted this because of the negative light it puts this President in.

And I just knew that the neocons who can only see black and white would have difficulty reading a writer with a viewpoint that deprecates their administration while attacking their opposition.
I don't agree with all of her points, obviously. She also wrote,

Let them see for themselves the crackpots you agree with politically.
The point, Linda is to focus on the ideas contained in the article rather than on me. I can post an article with which I don't absolutely agree or even one in which I totally disagree.
Your only interest lies in gathering dirt. Nobody learns anything with that agenda as their only goal.

helen....I think most here, unless their posting an article to put up for discussion, recognizes that people post links that support THEIR IDEALS...their beliefs...their opinions. RARELY does someone post a link that totally goes against what their own positions are.
And you have a history here of posting from crackpots, like this professor {OH GOD - she's teaching our children} with more anti-American opinions than any other poster does.

In comparison to your crackpots which include Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh along with your sources which include the Washington Times and the Drudge Report, my sources are outstanding.
BTW, If I chose to examine those parts of your articles which you choose NOT to bold, do you think that I would be right in assuming that you also agree with all of those ideas?
That would be funny because at times, I read the unbolded part of your articles to determine the real story. That is why your bolding technique is so aggravating to many readers. Rather than bold an entire paragraph as most usually do, you bold selective prhases leaving a careless reader with a distortion favorable only to you.
I could, for example, go to one of your posted articles and post information from those articles that you left unbolded...information with which I know you do not agree.
I suppose it's a fantasy to believe that anyone could post an article here to discuss.

Strange that you aren't willing to answer if you agree with ONLY the part about this President and this administration.
Looks to me like you picked an article from some prof who has a very screwed up view of America and our political system....and you're only agreeing with the part where she uses her anti-American position in regards to this administration.....but you AGREE??? her other position are from a crackpot profe?
When I read the political position of a writer I look at everything they've said to make my evaluation of their SANITY. I don't just say well 'this profe is right-on on this subjects....but NUTS on everything else she stated.

Is it supposed to be new?
Didn't we see interviews a year or more ago with a guy that was arrested at an airport in Germany, held for months on end with no one having a clue where he was and finally released from one of these secret facilities in Afganastan after it was determined that it was a case of mistaken identity?

That's my point....she won't. But let me call her and her political positions ani-American, un-American...and her liberal supporters come to her defense...saying they don't see her that way. When the fact is SHE IS.
Many off-the-wall liberals won't admit that there are American citizens, just like this profe in her article that are actively working against our form of government. THEY label themselves as [i]just[i] liberal democrats...when in fact they're socialists/progressives/communists/etc....and would love nothing better than to bring our system of government down.
AND Ron, this has been an area of contention between helen and myself since she first started posting here. Ron - I disagree with your first statement....totally...but agree with your second one.
You are fooling yourself IF you really believe that wanting to change our FORM of government is NOT anti-American, un-American. It is going against the values/our Constitution/etc that this Nation was formed on and has operated as since it's inception.
When one is against that....one is anti/un/American. That's what the term means. One that is AGAINST our form of government...and wants to see it be different...to be more like the socialist/communists/Marxism/Stalin forms of governments.
Just as those groups of anti-war protestors do....they have many American's who haven't a clue what their political position AGAINST our government is....they don't care they're supporting these groups.
