I heard Ontario (Canada) might be implementing a new law in which you have to stay in school and complete your high school education or you won't get your drivers license.

I also heard they were going to suspend licenses for parents who haven't kept up with child support, but that's been talked about for a few years.

What do you think?

I think the child support law is just fine. Any way that can be used to hurt slackers who won't pay to support their own spoor is a good idea.

I used to like the other one, but let's face it, not all kids are going to stay in school, and by refusing them driver's licenses, we're effectively keeping them out of the workforce. Not a good idea.

As far as licenses for dead beat parents go. . .yank them away. I'm all for that.

But Prof, wouldn't taking the license away from adults keep them out of the workforce as well?

Exactly...That would leave them without transportation to work.

You're probably right on a certain level, but I tend to think it might be more of a deterrent for adults than for high schoolers. Maybe more'd pay if they knew there was a palpable consequence to not paying.

I agree with it for the high school students. Though I'd widen it a bit--not all kids are acedemically inclined, so they should have it so the kids must be enrolled in (and complete) a trade school or apprenticeship if they opt not to finish regular high school.

As for adults, if a person doesn't have a car and doesn't live in an area with good public transportation, taking away their license would interfere with their earning potential. So child support wouldn't be paid that way either. The best thing in such cases is simply to garner the wages of the person in arrears.

Without the minimum of a HS education, what is their job future?

Working in a fast food joint, how could they afford gasoline anyway.

Here in Texas, deadbeat parents cannot renew their DL's not get a hunting license.

Bear, I saw one parent screaming that it would force her to cut her work hours to spend more time educating her children so they would make the grade. She was so mad, her face was the colour of a tomato. What a dork.

Evidently paying child support is becoming a problem in Canada. If the law is debated and passed, it should be enforced. If the teeth of this law is to deny a driver's license, it should be enforced.

I think that a law denying drivers license is a terrible way to enforce mandatory high school completion. Some children aren't cut out for the educational track. Alternative vocational training should be offered with a basic educational skills such as reading, writing and functional math as the criteria equivalent for a HS educational track diploma.
