Hello,I just came across some information that residents of Ontario prefer to rent rather than to own their water heaters,WHY?
Also, which is more popular?water heater driven by electricity or natural gas?
thanks
OH,another question, what about other provinces, like Alberta,do they rent or own??

I'm so glad this issue is finally being addressed!!

Hwahwa, we rent ours because it's only $10.00 a month, and they'll fix or replace it anytime you call for no charge.

os this more common in Ontario than say Alberta or any other Canadian provinces?
If so,why?
My house comes with the furnace, water heater and air conditioner,so how come Canada is different?and how often do heaters break down??

I'm not positive but am pretty sure Hot water heaters (gas or electric) last 10 to 12 years. You may have to change the heating elements in the electric ones.

The average price is around $200 or less.

I've never heard of renting. That's Canada for you.

You can lease your gas water heater here in Florida, but I don't think there is a program for lease/renting electric ones.

If you are not the DIY type, renting makes more sense. Cheaper in the long run than the cost of a heater, install and the first service call.

Renting is not the best choice if you can do the work yourself or have a fairly new heater and plan to own the house for less than 5 years.

Everyone should pretty much budget a water heater every 10-15 years. The tanks rust out due to minerals in the water.

We have hard water here, and we HAVE to have a water softener in house. Our house is 30 years old and the water softener went dead on us a year ago January. It went slowly as we werent getting the water pressure coming out of the shower and water faucets. The lime quickly built up.Our boiler was also going,so we had the water softener, boiler and a seperate water heater installed. One other thing we had installed was a water filter coming from the well into the house,so all the water is filtered even before it reaches the house.
The filter has to be replaced every 6 months, but Im glad we had it done. You wouldnt believe all crap thats in that filter when I change it.

My house is 3 years old and the water heater, furnace and air came with the house.
But I forget to clean out the water heater once a year as suggested by our builder(there is a switch we can turn on to do so) and I have been hearing popping sound coiming from the attic(both heater and furnace are in the attic). At first I thought I have a leak and I called the builder and they checked and said no,it is the water circulating around the metal coils making such noise and he turned the switch to flush out the minerals.
Now if we want to flush out the minerals, how long are we suppose to turn that switch?a few minutes ??
Is an annaul checkup by professional a good idea?I am house illiterate,I am glad I bot a new house.
As to why Canadians rent their heaters,I dont know,I just found out it is popular in Ontario.Businesses rent too-restaurants,shops,small office buildings etc/

" hwahwa"

I am house illiterate also.We have an annual agreement with the people who we bought the stuff from. They clean our peerless boiler, clean the water heater and check all water installations in the house. It costs us about $200.00,but to me its worth it.Im not a handy man,and I'd rather have a professional do it.Some of the stuff I could probably do,but I dont fool around with electricity.I suppose I could learn it,but I dont want to get electrocuted in the process. Then I think about Ben Franklin-inventor of electricity, flying a kite in a thunder storm............how f*cking stupid can you be???

When I first saw this, I thought, why would anyone rent their water heater? But since repairs are taken care of, I guess I understand.
We own ours, always have. So we pay to have it repaired if it needs it.

I believe gas is better than electricity. Its also cheaper up here.

from what I read, the rental fee range from 33 cents to 68 cents a day and it is tagged on to your gas bill each month,so you just pay your gas company.
We are talking Ontario.
