WASHINGTON (AFP) - Two US senators proposed legislation that would establish a new ".XXX" domain for racy or sexually explicit websites.

The bill proposed by senators Mark Pryor and Max Baucus, both Democrats, calls upon the US Department of Commerce to exclude sexually charged content from established website domain names such as .gov, .com, .org, .net, and .edu.

Baucus said at a press conference that the .XXX domain would help parents use filtering software to keep children from accessing pornographic sites, and would help prevent hapless Internet users from inadvertently stumbling onto sexually-explicit websites that they would prefer not to see.

"While the Internet is an exceptional learning tool, it allows children the same easy access to websites about space shuttles as it does for pornography," said Baucus, adding that violators would be subject to a hefty fine.

"This bill will section off a piece of the Internet neighborhood and confine adult sites to one location," the Montana senator said.

"It will give parents more tools to protect our kids. Parents should not have to worry about their children surfing into websites for adults -- either on purpose or by accident."

Anyone can register any kind of site under whatever domain they choose. If you've ever registered a domain name you know this already. In order for this to work, there'd have to be first of all a need to PROVE what sort of content you intended to put on your proposed domain name before registering it, and second of all, some sort of policing authority to ensure that this was actually happening.

Might be a good idea, but it'll never happen effectively. The WORST porn sites will be the ones hidden in .com and .org and other domains.

The bill ... calls upon the US Department of Commerce to exclude sexually charged content from established website domain names such as .gov, .com, .org, .net, and .edu.

Chuckle. 12 years too late. Some of the worst porn sites are to be found on abandoned sites or sites that neglected to renew their domain names - so innocent visitors will be rather surprised at the scantily clad models on display.

With any new technology - be it VHS, DVD, HDTV, iPods or the internet - amongst the first pioneers are usually those in adult entertainment (and often the most profitable too).

Last time a similar move was suggested it was voted down as being dangerous in concentrating too much porn in one place. Really, you can't win; hell you can't hardly break even with all these do-gooder idiots out there...

I hope it fails as that would be blatant censorship.

It is a fact of life that porn is as part of the internet but it has a right to be there as much as vendio has a right to be here.
