AOL is laying off about 1,300 employees, or 7 percent of its worldwide work force, and is closing its call center in Jacksonville, Fla.
Other cuts will come from call centers in Ogden, Utah, and Tucson, Ariz.
The layoffs announced Tuesday represent the first major cuts since the Time Warner Inc. Internet unit cut about 700 positions last fall.
Although AOL's subscription has been declining, spokesman Nicholas Graham attributed the layoffs to more savvy customers and better tools for them to help themselves.
"The Internet world of 2006 is very different from the world of 1996 when AOL first established these member centers," Graham said. "Today, AOL members are more savvy and sophisticated online. They are very different members today than they were in 1996."
In its early days, AOL had a reputation for attracting beginners, leading some longtime users to deride the service as the "Internet on training wheels."
But AOL dropped some of its hand-holding over the years and began offering its subscribers computer-diagnosis, anti-spyware and other free software, "allowing them to troubleshoot on their own," Graham said.

Wow peepa, where is your outrage at your beloved AOL? Those call center workers are the very ones you have been talking about, but now it seem like your little favorite entity it is the culprit, we hear/see nothing from you but more I hate Bush rhetoric.

Bear, See the article about another crooked republican below. When someone does a poll on the Kentucky Republican Governor CROOK I will bring it to you very quickly. Maybe CNN will poll about the crooked Governor. I am sure left behind BUSH supporters enjoy CNN polls.
I thought it funny how many Bush supporters blasted Lou Dobbs for bringing up that Bush was doing nothing about our WIDE OPEN southern borders last year.
Now since the G.O.P. LIARS are in trouble about the borders and the number of illegals in America. You conservatives are flip flopping like a beached fish and support what Dobbs has been saying all along.

Grand Jury Indicts Kentucky Governor

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A grand jury indicted Gov. Ernie Fletcher on misdemeanor charges Thursday, accusing him of illegally rewarding political supporters with state jobs since taking office two years ago.
Fletcher was charged with conspiracy, official misconduct and violating a prohibition against political discrimination. A conviction on any of the counts could lead to jail time and Fletcher's removal from office, said Vicki Glass, spokeswoman for the attorney general's office.
Fletcher spokesman Brett Hall said the Republican governor was not surprised by the indictment, given Democratic Attorney General Greg Stumbo's ongoing investigation into the administration's hiring practices.
``This has been a politically motivated, media-driven investigation from the start,'' Hall said, adding that the governor's staff was reviewing its options ``in the wake of this malicious prosecution.''

I don't like to see any working American lose their job. Bear's simply minded post was about AOL Polls not jobs.
Our business uses 2 IPs and AOL is one of them. Your just such a PUNK Ron if you and Bear are examples of what is left of the conservative political movement. WOW, what trouble for the G.O.P.
