Wonder if this bird is related to Teddy or Patrick Kennedy???

Possibly intoxicated pelican runs into windshield

(6/24/06 - LAGUNA BEACH, CA) - The driver was sober. The bird that crashed through the windshield of his car might have been flying under the influence.

A California brown pelican probably was intoxicated by a naturally occurring toxin found in algae blooms when she hit the car on the Pacific Coast Highway in Orange County Thursday, wildlife officials said.

The driver was startled, but not hurt. The pelican needed surgery for a broken foot, and also had a gash on its pouch.

"She's hanging in there," said Lisa Birkle, assistant wildlife director at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach.

Though toxicology tests take several weeks, the odd bird behavior was likely the result of poisoning from domoic acid, which has been found in the ocean in the area, Birkle said.

Pelicans have excellent eyesight and are unlikely to fly into cars when sober, Birkle said.

The center has received 16 calls of strange bird behavior in the past week, and was holding three other birds found disoriented and wandering through yards and streets.

Domoic acid poisoning was the most likely cause of a 1961 invasion of thousands of frantic seabirds in Northern California that inspired Alfred Hitchcock's film "The Birds."

Those birds flew into buildings and pecked several humans

Maggie, althought the summer Texas heat is here, the humidity has been pretty low the last several days. Spent yesterday afternoon on the riding mower, and most of the morning and afternoon today on maintance on the mower then recutting the grass clippings and spraying the fence line with weed killer. Hardly worked up a good sweat.

It's been in the 90's here and not a hint of a breeze..ugh.. I should be used to it by now..

Do you have a large property to mow? We have two acres, but some of that is woods, still it takes a good 4-5 hours to mow, trim hedges etc.

I stepped in another ant hill yesterday and those buggers bit me 6 times before I could get them off of my foot..teach me not to wear shoes.

Maggie, I mow 3 acres & have 7 more acres I let grow for my own wildlife preserve.

If I mow it once a week it takes me about 5 hours. As fast and thick as it grows, if I miss a week it takes better than twice a long.
