LOL....I am SO pleased that we see the moderate/consertive dems handed old radical, progressive/socialist nancy pelosi...her FIRST, of many - hopefully - setbacks.

Yep...in such a divided party...it's GREAT to see that so far...they're NOT going with the radical side of the dem party.

It's a good thing.

How about that setback Republicans got 11/7 ?

How do ya like DEM apples ?? LOL

See, linda, it's like this....our founding fathers , who you like to "quote" so much, had big disagreements while organizing this country. They all didn't fall in line behind ONE person and agree to everything ONE person or party wanted....they fought and argued and compromised and talked and listened and worked things out...that is deomcracy.....something a fascist like YOU just can't grasp (or can, but hate).

Nancy Pelosi is not an absolute ruler like you think bush is, nor should she, or he, be.

Sad that simple concepts of democracy HAVE to be explained to an American.....

Now, why don't ya do a little googling about how well the Republicans are getting along

P.S. I'm so glad to see you coming around to approve of what Democrats are doing

It's a good thing..

It's a very good thing. If it continues, it'll likely strengthen the party and put them in a very good position with voters in 2008.

I agree, profe, it might and it might not.

But I AM thrilled that IF we have the dems in control of both Houses....then we're beginning to see that the RADICAL, progressive side ISN'T winning in the division of the dem party.

I'd much rather see conservative/moderate dems in control....than the pelosi, kennedy, kerry, lee, etc. radical side.

Now pelosi has been put in her place.

And it helps me relax that we WON'T be seeing an immediate withdraw from Iraq. But rather the conservatives/moderates of both parties will be setting the agenda....not the radical progressive left.

(CNSNews.com) - By actively supporting Rep. John Murtha's (D-Pa.) bid to become the new majority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has put herself in a "lose-lose situation," according to political analysts.

Stephen Hess, senior fellow emeritus in governance studies at the Brookings Institution, told Cybercast News Service on Wednesday that supporting Murtha was highly risky for the first woman in line to become House speaker.

Should the Pennsylvania congressman be defeated in Thursday's vote, Pelosi would "clearly - in her first effort to win over her caucus - [have] sustained a very serious loss" that could make her appear weak, Hess said.

On the other hand, "if he wins, she has a person as her deputy who has a very murky ethical past" that could be the target of investigations by Congress and the press.

Hess said Pelosi was in a "lose-lose situation" and that some of her problems were self-inflicted.

"She had an opportunity to choose somebody who, although he has run against her in the past, has been a useful balance to her own ideological position," Hess said, referring to Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, a political moderate who has served as minority whip for the past four years.

Instead, Pelosi had thrown her support behind Murtha, who came to national prominence a year ago as an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq but "holds positions that are not in the mainstream of the party on questions like abortion and gun control," Hess noted.

Hoyer was considered the frontrunner for the post until last Sunday, when Pelosi released a letter she had written to Murtha praising his "courageous leadership" on the Iraq war.
"For this and for all you have done for Democrats in the past and especially this last year, I am pleased to support your candidacy for majority leader for the 110th Congress," the California lawmaker wrote.

Since then, Pelosi has been actively supporting Murtha's leadership bid by attending events with the Pennsylvania congressman and calling House colleagues to try and convince them to oust Hoyer, whom Pelosi defeated in a 2001 race for minority leader.

Dani Doane, director of House relations for the conservative Heritage Foundation, told Cybercast News Service that Pelosi's decision to campaign for Murtha was one of her "first big mistakes."

"The fact that she didn't see this as a 'lose-lose' is surprising to me," Doane said, "but I understand why she's doing it: She wants her own team in."

However, Murtha "has a lot of ethical question marks next to his name," Doane added, and Pelosi was running the risk of having a deputy "who's going to get a lot of negative attention at a time when the Democrats want to accentuate the positive."

Doane's points were echoed by Melanie Sloan, executive director of the liberal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

"Pelosi's endorsement of Rep. Murtha, one of the most unethical members of Congress, shows that she may have prioritized ethics reform merely to win votes with no real commitment to changing the culture of corruption," Sloan said in a news release.

"How can Americans believe that the Democrats will return integrity to the House when future Speaker Pelosi has endorsed an ethically challenged member for a leadership position?" Sloan asked. "Rep. Murtha is the wrong choice for this job."

Sloan pointed to a CREW report entitled "Beyond [Tom] DeLay: The 20 Most Corrupt Members of Congress," which chronicles accusations that Murtha has abused his position as ranking member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee.

The document claims that Murtha attempted to benefit the lobbying firm of former long-time staffer Paul Magliocchetti and clients of Robert "Kit" Murtha, the congressman's brother and a registered lobbyist.

Cybercast News Service previously reported that Murtha has been called "a one-man wrecking crew" when it comes to preventing institutional policing of corruption in Congress.

"Rep. Murtha's opposition to ethics reform does not bode well for future Speaker Pelosi's promise to enact ethics legislation in the first 100 hours of the new Congress," Sloan said.

On Tuesday, Murtha was quoted as telling a group of Democratic moderates that the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act, an ethics and lobbying reform bill promoted by Pelosi, was "total crap."
"Even though I think it's total crap, I'll vote for it and pass it because that's what Nancy wants," Murtha said, according to published reports of his comments during the meeting.

Doane said that Murtha's comments on Tuesday could be an indication of future problems for Pelosi. "Here she is putting her guy in, and the first thing he does is criticize one of her main initiatives.

"That ain't a good sign," she added.

Gosh....even the Washington POST...of all papers....sees the DEFEAT that the dems brought to pelosi in her FIRST attempt to get support from those she leads.

WP: Pelosi SPLITS Dems

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15721403/

"Leads"? Guess that's not the appropriate word...as she's NOT leading them....they've VOTED AGAINST HER [by QUITE a LARGE margin too]..... and her wishes in her FIRST power struggle....with many more to follow, I have no doubt.
lol

Her DEFEAT vote went like this:

Hoyer defeated Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania in a vote of 149-86.

This is going to be GREAT watching how few times they actually support her. LOL LOL LOL

Well....at least she's good for something...spliting the dems up.

lol....yes, the old 'come back' kid did squeak that win out didn't he?

But it's NOT the same thing at all. I think most are aware that there is GREAT division about the war in Iraq between the radical progressive left and the more moderate/conservative DEMS. They've been in a power struggle. Still are...and so far pelosi is LOSING. YEAH!!!

Now, if you're aware that there are radical anti war republicans verses conservative/moderate republicans....please inform me. Because I have't read, seen, nor heard a THING about it.

And besides having a ultra-liberal muslim elected as a first to our congress.....

...the dems also managed to get a socialist, bernie sanders, elected with the support of the dem far lefties too. That should make many radicals happy to have our FIRST socialist taking the place of [I] jeffords.

Let's see who supported and backed this socialist from the dem party:

hmmmm...

Chuck Schumer,

Harry Reid,

Barack Obama and

Barbara Boxer.

And he received a large donation from Hillary Clinton's Political Action Committee, HILLPAC, which called him one of their MOST important candidates.

Kind of makes me wonder just what difference there is between one who considers themself an ultra-liberal, a progressive or a socialist anymore.

Doesn't seem to be much difference between them ...and they SURE all support one another.

Speaker Pelosi Tempts Disaster

Nancy Pelosi has managed to severely scar her leadership even before taking up the gavel as the new speaker of the House.

First, she played politics with the leadership of the House Intelligence Committee to settle an old score and a new debt.

And then she put herself in a lose-lose position by trying to force a badly tarnished ally, Representative John Murtha, on the incoming Democratic Congress as majority leader.

The party caucus put a decisive end to that gambit yesterday, giving the No. 2 job to Steny Hoyer, a longtime Pelosi rival.

But Ms. Pelosi's damage to herself was already done. The well-known shortcomings of Mr. Murtha were broadcast for all to see — from his quid-pro-quo addiction to moneyed lobbyists to the grainy government tape of his involvement in the Abscam scandal a generation ago.

The resurrected tape — feasted upon by Pelosi enemies — shows how Mr. Murtha narrowly survived as an unindicted co-conspirator, admittedly tempted but finally rebuffing a bribe offer: "I'm not interested — at this point."

Mr. Murtha would have been a farcical presence in a leadership promising the cleanest Congress in history. Ms. Pelosi should have been first to realize this, having made such a fiery campaign sword of her vows to end Capitol corruption.

Instead, she acted like some old-time precinct boss and lost the first test before her peers.

As incoming speaker, Ms. Pelosi will be dogged by skepticism — from within the party and without — about her political smarts and her ability to deliver a galvanized agenda.

It was a no-brainer for the caucus to end the misguided fight for Mr. Murtha, who belittled the need for reform.

Now the pressure is even greater for Speaker-elect Pelosi to recover by leading the House to something actually worth fighting for — starting with credible anticorruption strictures.

For this she needs gaffe-wary advisers, among them Mr. Hoyer, who has his own questionable record of flourishing in big-money politics. The new majority — led by a presumably wiser speaker — must realize by now that intramural vendetta is hardly a substitute for productive government.
